Hotel Description
I remember stumbling off the vaporetto at Fondamente Nove – you know, that stop that’s always a bit chaotic with the ferries coming in from the islands – and weaving my way through those narrow calli to find the San Giovanni e Paolo Canal View Apartment R&R. It’s tucked away at 6408 Corte del Cafetier in Cannaregio, which honestly feels like the real Venice, away from the San Marco crowds but close enough that you’re not isolated. I mean, it’s just a short walk to the Ospedale Civile – that massive hospital that’s actually a former convent, with its grand courtyard that’s perfect for a quiet gelato break. When I first pushed open the door, the place hit me with that classic Venetian charm: high ceilings with exposed beams that creak a little underfoot, and this faint, briny scent from the canal right outside the window. It’s not one of those glossy hotels; it’s more like borrowing a local’s apartment, with a full kitchen that came in handy for whipping up pasta from the market at Rialto – which, by the way, is only about a 15-minute stroll across the bridge.
What really sold me was the view – oh man, waking up to that canal scene, with gondolas gliding by and the occasional splash of an oar in the water. It’s rated 8.8 for a reason, and as a 4-star spot, it delivers without the fuss. The apartment’s got this cozy setup: a comfy bed that doesn’t sag like some budget places I’ve crashed in, and a bathroom with those old-school tiles that feel authentically worn but spotless. Check-in was a breeze – the host met me with keys and a quick rundown, no long lines or formal desk nonsense. Well, sort of – I arrived during high season in July, and the alley was buzzing with tourists heading to the basilica next door (San Zanipolo, as locals call it), so it got a tad noisy in the evenings with bells ringing and chatter echoing off the walls. But come nightfall, it quiets down, and you’re left with that peaceful hum of the city settling in. I appreciated the little touches, like fresh linens and a coffee maker that actually works – none of that weak espresso you get in some spots. Parking? Forget it; this is Venice, so leave the car on the mainland and embrace the walking (or water taxi if you’re splurging).
Honestly, if you’re the type who wants to feel like you’re living in Venice rather than just visiting, this place is gold. It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi can be spotty during peak hours, and those canal smells get stronger after rain – but that’s part of the authenticity, right? I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in shoulder season like October when the crowds thin out and you can snag a table at that tiny osteria around the corner on Strada Nova without waiting. At the end of the day, it’s the kind of spot that makes you linger over breakfast on the balcony, watching the world float by, and reminds you why Venice steals hearts. If you’re planning a trip, book it – you’ll thank me later.

I loved that it was super clean and welcoming.
What could be improved: I didn’t like the walk up or the journey there. I wish I would have been told which public water boat stop was closest when I booked it as a courtesy. Figuring Venice out and getting to the hotel was a difficult ordeal that could have been easily avoided had directions been provided.
