Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Stemar Apartment Diva during one of those whirlwind trips to Venice last spring – you know, when the crowds are just starting to thicken but the weather’s still mild enough to wander without melting. It’s tucked away on Calle degli Albanesi in the Castello district, right off the beaten path from the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop. Honestly, getting there was a bit of an adventure; I hopped off the boat at San Zaccaria – that’s the one with the grand church overlooking the lagoon – and wove through those narrow, shadowy calles for about five minutes. No cars in Venice, obviously, so you’re on foot, dodging the occasional delivery cart or stray cat. But man, that walk sets the tone – the air smells faintly of salt and old stone, and you can hear the distant lap of canal water against the walls. The address is 4226, and it’s easy to miss if you’re not paying attention; there’s just a discreet door amid the faded pinkish facades, no big flashy sign like some of the San Marco hotels. Check-in was a breeze, though – the host met me right on time with a key and a quick rundown in broken English (and my even more broken Italian), pointing out the nearest bakery on Calle del Dose for morning cornetti. Well, sort of a bakery; it’s more like a hole-in-the-wall spot where locals grab their espresso, and it’s a lifesaver if you’re jet-lagged.
What really won me over about Stemar – it’s an apartment setup, not your standard hotel room, which makes all the difference in a city like Venice where eating out every meal can drain your wallet. The place is rated 9.3 for good reason; it’s got that cozy, lived-in vibe with high ceilings and these creaky wooden floors that echo a bit when you pace around – I mean, it’s an old building, so expect some character. My unit had a little kitchenette stocked with basics (think pasta pots and a fridge that actually chills your prosecco properly), and the bedroom overlooked a quiet courtyard – no gondola serenades blasting through the window at dawn, thank goodness. Mornings were peaceful; I’d brew coffee and listen to the bells from nearby San Giorgio dei Greci church, which is just a stone’s throw away if you’re into Byzantine architecture. The bathroom was spotless, with those fluffy towels that feel like they’ve been line-dried in the sun, and the Wi-Fi held up even during peak hours – crucial for mapping out routes to avoid the tourist throngs around the Rialto. Oh, and a minor gripe: the stairs up to the apartment are steep and there’s no elevator, so pack light if you’re not up for a workout. But hey, that’s Venice for you – everything’s a bit of a climb.
All in all, if you’re looking to feel like you’re actually living in Venice rather than just passing through, Stemar Apartment Diva is a gem. It’s in Castello, which is way more authentic than the overpriced spots in San Marco – think fewer selfie sticks and more neighborhood vibes, with easy walks to the Arsenale for those naval history exhibits or even a quick jaunt to the Biennale gardens in high season. I stayed four nights and left wishing for more; it’s the kind of place that makes you rethink rushing back to the mainland. Four stars? Feels like it earns every one, especially at that price point during shoulder season. Just watch out for the high tide in autumn – the calles can get a tad splashy, but that’s part of the charm, right?

Great location quiet but in a very busy location
What could be improved: It was still warm out and so we opened the windows and there were mosquitoes. Not an issue close the windows but the air conditioning did not seem to cool the aptHelen from United Kingdom – 28 September 2024 (10/10)
Luca was great at correspondence with me, before the trip and during check in and check out. Every question was answered in such a friendly way and nothing was a bother. I met another staff member on the day of checkout and she was also so helpful and friendly. The apartment is spotlessly clean and comfortable and the location is superb. I would definitely return and recommend to friends.
What could be improved: I honestly have nothing to put here. The apartment offered everything we needed for a 4 day stay.Marianna from Australia – 4 September 2024 (10/10)
