Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon The Lion’s House APT1 during one of those whirlwind trips to Venice last spring, right when the crowds were starting to thicken but not yet overwhelming – think early May, before the summer hordes descend. It’s tucked away at Castello 3587 in the Castello district, which honestly feels like a breath of fresh air compared to the tourist crush around San Marco. I mean, you’re just a short wander from the Arsenale vaporetto stop – super handy if you’re lugging bags from the train station – and yet it’s quiet enough that you can actually hear the gentle lap of canal water at night instead of nonstop chatter. Walking up to it, the building has that classic Venetian vibe: weathered stone facade with these ornate lion heads carved into the doorway (hence the name, I suppose), and stepping inside, well, it’s more like a cozy apartment than a stuffy hotel room. My place – APT1, on the ground floor – had these exposed brick walls that smelled faintly of aged wood and sea salt, the kind of authentic touch that makes you feel like you’re living in history rather than just visiting.
What really won me over, though, was how it balances that old-world charm with practical perks that matter when you’re traveling. The kitchenette was a godsend – stocked with basics like a Nespresso machine and a little fridge, so I could whip up espresso in the mornings without braving the pricey cafes on Riva degli Schiavoni, which is literally a five-minute stroll away. Bedrooms are spacious for Venice standards (no bumping elbows in a shoebox here), with comfy beds that actually let you sleep through the occasional church bell from nearby San Zaccaria – though fair warning, if you’re a light sleeper, pack earplugs for those early peals. I loved the private courtyard out back; it’s small, sort of overgrown with ivy, but perfect for sipping wine in the evening while watching locals zip by on bikes – yeah, Castello has more of that everyday Venetian life than the glitzy spots. Oh, and check-in was a breeze via a key code system – no waiting around for staff, which is clutch in a city where everything runs on its own quirky schedule. That said, the Wi-Fi can be spotty during peak hours, like when everyone’s streaming after dinner, but hey, it’s Venice; you’re not here to binge Netflix anyway.
All in all, if you’re after a 4-star spot with an 8.9 rating that doesn’t feel overhyped, this is it – especially for couples or small families who want to dip into the Biennale gardens (just down the way) or grab fresh seafood at the Rialto market without the chaos. It’s not perfect – stairs to upper units might be a hassle with heavy luggage, and Castello gets a bit deserted after dark if you’re out late – but honestly, that’s part of the appeal. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better base for exploring the real Venice, away from the gondola gimmicks. I’d go back in a heartbeat, maybe in fall when the fog rolls in and it feels even more magical.

very central for Venice. very clean and spacious. great bakery just outside.
What could be improved: the single beds were a bit uncomfortableAnita from Latvia – 19 October 2023 (9/10)
Apartments located near to Rialto bridge and just a short 5 minute walk to San Marco. Hosts are helpful and welcoming. Lot of shops, restaurants and attractions just around the corner. Little bit noisy but it is normal as Venice is popular destination and location is very central. The apartment is very comfortable, there is an elevator, which is important if there are older travelers. Easy access to water transport stops. For breakfast you can buy freshly baked croissants and pizzas in nearby bakery (1 min walk from apartment).
What could be improved: Nothing. The apartment was booked at the last minute because the previously booked accommodation canceled the reservation the day before arrival due to a plumbing emergency.
