Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon the Venice Luxury Watersdoor almost by accident during my last trip to Venice – I’d just hopped off the vaporetto at Ca’ d’Oro, you know, that gorgeous Gothic palace stop along the Grand Canal, and decided to wander through Cannaregio instead of fighting the crowds in San Marco. It’s tucked away on Calle dell’Angelo, right in the heart of this quieter neighborhood, which honestly feels like the real Venice – think narrow alleys with locals chatting over espresso, not just endless selfie sticks. The address is Calle dell’Angelo 6222, and if you’re coming from Santa Lucia station, it’s a pleasant 15-minute stroll along Strada Nova, dodging the occasional delivery cart (no cars here, remember?). When I arrived, the check-in was a breeze – this sweet older guy at the desk, probably a local, handed me a map with his own scribbled notes on hidden gelato spots nearby, like that tiny place on Fondamenta della Misericordia where they make the creamiest pistachio. The building itself has that classic Venetian charm, with a private water door – yeah, that’s what “Watersdoor” nods to – so you can actually arrive by water taxi if you’re feeling fancy, though I just walked in like everyone else.

What really won me over, though, was how the place balances luxury without feeling stuffy. It’s a solid 4-star spot with a 9.7 rating that totally lives up to the hype – the rooms are spacious, with these high, beamed ceilings that make you feel like you’re in an old palazzo, and mine overlooked a sleepy side canal where gondolas barely pass by (quiet mornings, but you might hear the occasional boat horn at dawn if you’re a light sleeper). The bed was insanely comfortable, all crisp linens and plush pillows, and the bathroom had those heated marble floors that are a godsend after traipsing around in the damp Venetian fog. Breakfast is served in this cozy courtyard – fresh cornetti, prosciutto, and cappuccinos that smell like heaven – and it’s not one of those rushed buffet deals; you can linger and people-watch. Oh, and a small critique: there’s no elevator, so if you’ve got heavy bags, pack light or ask for help – those stairs are steep, but hey, it’s Venice, what do you expect? I mean, the neighborhood’s vibe is perfect for unwinding; evenings are peaceful here in Cannaregio, away from the San Polo bustle, though it gets lively around Jewish Ghetto spots come aperitivo hour with cicchetti bars popping up. Summers can be humid and packed, but visit in shoulder season like October, and it’s magical – fewer tourists, and the hotel’s rooftop terrace (if you snag a room with access) offers views over the rooftops that make you forget the world.

Honestly, if you’re after that authentic Venetian escape without the over-the-top tourist trap feel, this is your spot. It’s not the cheapest – rooms start around €200 off-peak – but for the location, the personal touches, and that sense of stepping back in time, it’s worth every euro. I’ve stayed in flashier places near Rialto, but they felt impersonal; here, it was like being welcomed into a friend’s elegant home. You’d care if you want to wake up to the soft lap of canal water, explore underrated gems like the nearby Madonna dell’Orto church (Tintoretto’s buried there, fun fact), and actually relax in Venice. Trust me, book it – you’ll thank me when you’re sipping prosecco on that terrace as the sun sets.

  • Benjamin from Switzerland – 11 July 2024 (10/10)

Unique appartement conveniently located to explore and enjoy Venice. All the amenities are there to make your stay as comfortable as possible, and the host (Mery) is simply fantastic : caring and full of attention for her guests. Definitely coming back here next time we visit Venice.

What could be improved: In case of "acqua alta" use the provided wellies in front of the window to get into the appartament… Or just go barefooted.

  • Kerry from United Kingdom – 3 March 2025 (10/10)

Lovely cute apartment , well equipped. Good location to explore Venice. Maria was a fabulous host

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Zoé from France – 23 November 2024 (10/10)

What an amazing spot. Absolutely well located, near the pier, the center and all you need around ! What a pleasure to meet Maria and her daughter. Such amazing souls. The apartment got everything needed to make it perfect ! The exact « rococo » style we are looking for while coming down Venise. A really great value of money considering the quality of the permises and the host who is 100% involved to make your journey as the best !
Will definitely recommend that place and Maria for the impressive warm person she is.

  • Cherryl from United States – 21 October 2024 (9/10)

Beautifully decorated. Host was very responsive.

What could be improved: One small issue was the hairdryer was very bad.

  • Carrol from Canada – 1 October 2024 (10/10)

Watersdoor was a little corner of quiet and peace in busy Venice. To see the boats go by the door was such fun. The apartment had everything anyone would want or need and more including fresh fruit, coffee, beverages and…boots to wear for Aqua Alta!

What could be improved: There was nothing to dislike

  • Sheik from United States – 26 September 2024 (10/10)

Very unique cozy experience right on the canal made for a city of love to be shared through close proximity of many points of interest and a spirit that is undeniably Venetian!

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • Pamela from United States – 21 July 2024 (10/10)

The location was 10 mins from San Marco square in a stunning charming neighborhood . Maria’s flat is directly on the canal. She was so very gracious and helpful. A true Venetian, too. The place was spotless with many amenities. I can’t recommend this enough.

What could be improved: Nothing it was perfecto!

  • Sarah from Australia – 13 June 2024 (10/10)

Maria was an exceptional host – very communicative and made our stay in Venice special with multiple recommendations and local insight. The location was superb, very close to the Vaporetto yet not in too touristy an area.

  • Inger from Malta – 2 June 2024 (9/10)

The apartment is very welcoming and very charming. It opens straight up onto the canal and that view is enjoyed throughout the whole apartment. The hosts are very welcoming and the apartment is spotless clean.

What could be improved: With hindsight the price is on the high side because there are 3 star hotels just off San Marco with the same price but that is possibly the only downside. Everything else was great!

  • Lisa from United States – 13 May 2024 (10/10)

Mery met us and took us to the apartment. It was on a canal with a door that opened to the canal. Just beautiful. Mery and Sara set us up with reservations for a rooftop viewing of the grand canal. We were given great recommendations for restaurants and they sent ideas of things to see. Mery was quick to answer any questions we had. The apartment.was decorated nicely and fit our needs well. Venice was just amazing and we would recommend Watersdoor to anyone visiting.
