Antica Locanda Sturion Residenza d’Epoca Overview

First Impressions

Walking down the narrow Calle del Sturion in San Polo, you might almost miss Antica Locanda Sturion Residenza d’Epoca if you’re not paying attention — but that would be a real shame. This three-star gem sits right along the Grand Canal, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. I mean, you’re literally steps from the Rialto Bridge, which is both a blessing and something to keep in mind if you’re not a fan of crowds during peak hours.

The Perfect Venice Base

What struck me most about this place is how it manages to put you right in the heart of Venice without feeling touristy inside. The San Polo district is actually one of the oldest parts of the city, and you can feel that history in the narrow streets around the hotel. You’ll find yourself wandering past tiny bacari (those little wine bars locals love) and stumbling onto quiet campos that most tourists never see. The couples who stay here consistently rave about the location — and after spending time in the area, I get why they rate it so highly for romantic getaways.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in had this wonderful mix of old Venetian charm and modern comfort that you don’t always find in historic buildings. The floors creak a bit — which honestly adds to the character — and the windows look out either toward the canal or into the maze of surrounding streets. What I appreciated most was how quiet it gets at night, despite being so central. The thick walls of these old palazzos really do their job, though you might catch the occasional late-night conversation from people walking back from dinner.

Morning Rituals

Breakfast here is one of those pleasant surprises that makes you glad you didn’t just grab a cornetto from a café. They set up a proper spread with both continental and Italian options — think fresh pastries alongside local cheeses and cured meats. The buffet setup works well, and you can actually sit and plan your day without feeling rushed. I found myself lingering over coffee more than once, watching the early morning light hit the canal through the windows.

Why Guests Love It

Look, Venice can be overwhelming, and finding a place that feels like a genuine retreat while keeping you connected to everything that matters is tricky. This locanda manages that balance really well. You’re close enough to walk to San Marco in about ten minutes, but far enough from the main tourist streams to feel like you’re experiencing something more authentic. The staff knows the neighborhood inside and out — they’ll point you toward the best cicchetti spots and tell you which bridges to cross for the prettiest canal views. It’s the kind of place that makes Venice feel manageable, even on your first visit.

I loved that housekeeping came in every day and did a thorough job of cleaning up and meticulously restocked everything. Breakfast was great – I’m always ravenous in the morning and there was plenty of nutritious, quality food to fuel me through to lunch.

  • Otto from United States – 15 March 2025 (9/10)

Room was very clean and spacious, good breakfast and friendly staff.

What could be improved: No elevator and our room was on the third floor. We had been notified in advance. We climbed all 69 steps to get to our room, good exercise. No complaints just a comment.

  • Rumnique from United Kingdom – 18 November 2024 (9/10)

Location is fantastic!! It is really easy and quick to walk to the top Venice sights from the hotel (Rialto bridge is literally just outside it). We loved the style of the hotel too as it felt Venetian and thought had gone into it. Staff were very friendly, always with a smile on their faces 🙂 Breakfast was lovely, continental style, not the largest selection but we were very full by it each day! The stairs didn’t bother us at all, it’s Venice so we’re already walking most the time and doing steps for the bridges, so an additional staircase really didn’t seem significant!

What could be improved: Nothing, would stay here again!

The location of this hotel was amazing , we booked a double room however on checking in we weee offered a free upgrade to an apartment and this 100% made our stay the double room was tiny but the apartment was amazing 🤩

What could be improved: Nothing ( apart from me being unfit and climbing the stairs for breakfast ) 😂

My husband and I spent 3 days at the end of our 3 week honeymoon here. Great location with comfortable and quiet room. Fantastic breakfast with views of the canals. The apartment we stayed in had a small kitchen with electric kettle, tea, and cookies. Toiletries included hand soap and body wash as well as a working hair dryer. Really close to restaurants and shops as well as Rialto Bridge. Also close to gondola ride area.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

Beautiful, old hotel right on the Grand Canal, off the Rialto Bridge. We were in room 10 up an additional flight of stairs. Room was quiet, roomy with good space for luggage. Bathroom was basic with a good shower. No real views from the rooms. Breakfast was good with fresh croissants, made to order eggs, coffee/teas/juices with views of the Grand Canal. Perfect location to reach Piazza San Marcos and the Scuala and Frari easily without being in the middle of all the crowds.

What could be improved: Keep in mind there's no elevator and a good 50+ steps to the hotel.

The location. It’s so close to the Rialto bridge and easy to find, but still quiet and comfortable.
