Antico Caminetto alla Biennale Overview

First Impressions

Walking down the narrow Calle Marcello in Castello, you might almost miss Antico Caminetto alla Biennale if you’re not paying attention — it’s tucked into the neighborhood like it’s always belonged there. This three-star hotel has that authentic Venetian feel that’s honestly hard to find these days, especially in areas this well-positioned. The entrance feels intimate rather than grand, which I actually prefer when I’m looking for something that feels more like a local discovery than a tourist magnet.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s what I love about staying in Castello — you’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough from the crowds to actually breathe. The hotel sits in what’s consistently rated as Venice’s top area, and honestly, couples seem to get this more than anyone (they rate the location nearly perfect for romantic trips). You can walk to St. Mark’s Square without the hassle of staying right on top of it, and when the Biennale is running, you’re practically next door to all the contemporary art action. The neighborhood has those little bacari and cafes that locals actually use, which means better food and real Venetian life happening around you.

The Experience

What strikes me about Antico Caminetto alla Biennale is how it manages to feel both historic and comfortable without trying too hard. The rooms have character — I mean, this is Venice, so you’re going to get some quirks with the old architecture, but that’s part of what you’re here for, right? The staff knows the area well enough to point you toward the good stuff, and there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t oversell itself. It’s refined in that understated Italian way where quality speaks louder than flashiness.

Getting Around

The vaporetto stops are close enough that you won’t be dragging luggage through endless bridges and stairs — trust me, this matters more than you think when you’re actually here with bags. From this spot in Castello, you can easily reach the Giardini for the Biennale pavilions, or head toward Arsenale if that’s more your scene. Even getting to the train station or airport connections is straightforward, which takes some of the stress out of arrival and departure days. You know what’s nice? You can actually walk to dinner without it becoming a major navigation project.

Why Guests Love It

People keep coming back to this hotel because it delivers on what Venice should feel like without the tourist trap nonsense. The location score speaks for itself — 9.2 is seriously impressive in a city where every corner claims to be the best spot. Couples especially seem to connect with the romantic, authentic atmosphere of the area, and I get why. There’s something about staying somewhere that feels like a real neighborhood rather than a theme park version of Venice. It’s the kind of place where you can have genuine moments between all the sightseeing, and honestly, that’s what makes a trip memorable.

Savvy travelers reserve a hotel in Venice before acqua alta alerts to snag suites with private fondaco docks.

Reviews of Antico Caminetto alla Biennale

  • Ioannis from Greece – 27 June 2024 (8/10)

    Big rooms

What could be improved: The toilet is too small

  • Stawrula from Germany – 18 June 2024 (6/10)

Apartment is good located. Quiet and sweet neighborhood, near to nice bars and restaurants.

What could be improved: Very damp, lots of mosquitos and no nets on the windows.

  • Claire from United Kingdom – 5 June 2024 (6/10)

    Great location. Quiet.

What could be improved: Terrible sofa to sit on. Terrible to sleep on when opened into a bed.

  • Roy from United Kingdom – 3 May 2024 (8/10)

This is a very utilitarian apartment with every thing you need. The shower is good , the bed is really comfy, and the location for the Biennale is great. We had a very useful stay.

What could be improved: It was a difficult place for us to find, as it is nicely tucked away. However, this means it is quiet and restful.

  • Leslie from Canada – 8 October 2023 (8/10)

    Location

What could be improved: We stayed for two weeks. No comfortable seating in the unit after a long day of walking and exploring.

  • Brenda from United States – 5 June 2023 (8/10)

Perfect location, loved the quiet nights, loved how close it was to the street market neighborhood area. It was an easy walk to the square and surrounding areas and to catch a boat. Loved being able to open the windows.

What could be improved: Mosquitoes – had nothing to do with the property but sprayed bug repellent around the windows.

  • Iris from Canada – 4 May 2023 (6/10)

    location

  • Stoif from Ireland – 11 December 2022 (8/10)

The area is a very authentic area of Venice beside a nice park and near to coffee shops and restaurants.

What could be improved: Be careful the door can close behind you if you step out without the key. Happened to me. My venice host came and let me in again approx 90 mins later. I am so grateful to them 😀

  • Stephen from Canada – 9 September 2022 (8/10)

This apartment had almost everything I was looking for: excellent wifi reception (which can be a rarity in Venice), a well-equipped kitchen, a washing machine (essential for an extended stay), air-conditioning (a massive relief during hot nights in August), even an ironing board and iron, close to a supermarket, and close to the vaparetto (had to do a lot of back-and-forth to the Lido). Communication with the property manager was great, which made check-in very easy. The apartment is just off the great via Garibaldi but still on a quiet street. There is also a sofa bed in TV room, which can come in handy for additional guests. Tons of great cafes and restaurants just steps away from the apartment.

What could be improved: In general, I do have a preference for an apartment located on the top floor instead of the ground floor (having someone above you can possibly translate to hearing them move around above). But I'm willing to make an exception for this apartment…

  • Erika from United States – 19 June 2022 (7/10)

    excellent location to Biennial

What could be improved: Ground floor and quite musty. Noise upstairs. “Sofa” was different than pictured. Not appropriate for an adult sleeper. Washing machine imparted massive amounts of white lint on black clothes. Filter needs changing.
