Hotel Description

You know, when I first stumbled upon Anzolo Palace – Rooms & Apartments after getting off the vaporetto at San Zaccaria, I was already half-lost in those winding calli of Castello, dodging the occasional pigeon and the faint smell of canal water that hits you in Venice no matter what. It’s tucked away on Calle dell’Anzolo, right off the main drag but far enough from the San Marco crowds that you don’t feel like you’re in a perpetual tourist stampede. Honestly, arriving in the late afternoon during shoulder season – think early October, when the summer hordes have thinned out but the air’s still got that crisp, briny bite – made the whole check-in a breeze. The staff, a mix of locals who seem to know every shortcut in the sestiere, greeted me with that easy Venetian warmth, sorting out my bags without fuss, though fair warning: no elevator here, so if you’ve got heavy luggage, those narrow stairs might test you a bit. My room – well, actually an apartment-style one with a tiny kitchenette – overlooked a quiet courtyard, all faded frescoes and ivy creeping up the walls, which felt like stepping into some old Canaletto painting, minus the gondola traffic noise.

What really sets this place apart, I think, is how it captures that authentic slice of Venetian life without trying too hard. It’s a 3-star spot, so don’t expect marble spas or infinity pools – we’re talking solid, no-frills comfort in a restored palazzo that’s seen centuries of history. The beds are comfy enough, with those high-thread-count sheets that surprise you for the price, and the bathroom’s got that classic Italian tile work, though the shower pressure can be a tad finicky after a long day of wandering. I loved brewing my own espresso in the morning (there’s a little market on nearby Campo Santa Maria Formosa for fresh bread and prosciutto – pro tip, go early to beat the locals), then stepping out to Rialto Bridge in under 10 minutes on foot, or dodging over to the Arsenale for that off-the-beaten-path vibe. Evenings were my favorite: the neighborhood quiets down after dark, save for the distant hum of vaporettos and maybe a bell tolling from San Zaccaria church. Oh, and if you’re there in high season, like July, brace for some alleyway bustle – it’s lively, not overwhelming, but earplugs might help if you’re a light sleeper. Minor gripe? The Wi-Fi can lag in the back rooms, but hey, you’re in Venice – put the phone down and watch the world from your window.

All in all, with its 8.2 rating feeling spot-on for the value, Anzolo Palace is the kind of place I’d recommend to friends who want Venice without the glossy veneer. It’s not perfect – sort of like the city itself, charmingly imperfect – but it gives you that real immersion, steps from the action yet in a corner where you can actually breathe. If you’re traveling solo or with a small group, snag one of the apartments; they’re a steal for longer stays, letting you live like a local rather than just visiting. Trust me, after a few days here, you’ll be navigating those calli like you own them.

Reviews

  • Ketty from Colombia – 30 June 2024 (9/10)

Location good and comfy, only need to pay additional fee 28€ in cash

What could be improved: We didnt know that need to pay more in cash

  • Reparan from Slovenia – 25 March 2025 (9/10)

    Good location, well equipped kitchen.

What could be improved: A bit older and worn furniture, no TV

  • Grace from Ireland – 18 March 2025 (9/10)

Basic, clean accommodation right in the heartbeat of Venice. Walking distance to everything. Anything that was needed (more coffee pods for our room in our case) was only a phone call away.

What could be improved: There was a smell on the landing but not in the bedroom.

  • Jotapunto from Spain – 3 March 2025 (7/10)

Location, services, staff (they allowed us enter way before the checkin time)

What could be improved: The last day there was a strong smell of drains that was unbearable.

  • Reparan from Slovenia – 27 February 2025 (9/10)

NIce location to stay in center ov Venice,. actually few steps from St.Narco square. Clean and confortible accomodation. Not exactly modernly furnished, but the furniture is well-maintained, functional and clean. Enough towels, small kitchen well-equipped including dishwasher and microwave. Easy communication and self-check-in. The owner responds immediately via WhatsApp to any questions. Very satisfied, probably see you next year.-

What could be improved: Some bigger glass could be available for beers and a few more plugs or at least some extension cord available.

  • Armandas from United Kingdom – 12 February 2025 (9/10)

Location was perfect, easy to navigate with google maps, clean room, nice shower and toilet, had a fridge and coffee machine which was amazing. Instructions were clear, all communication was smooth.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • Gabriela from Ecuador – 23 December 2024 (8/10)

It was perfectly located in the heart of Venice, walking distance to San Marco square and plenty of beautiful canals, cafes and restaurants around. Staff was amazingly helpful! They allowed us to leave our luggage at their place a day before check in while we did a day trip to Padova. They were also very kind to give us more time to check out. Communication with Andrea was great at all times. Bed sheets and towels were super clean. Toiletries available which is always helpful.

What could be improved: Feedback for improvement: The rooms could be a bit renovated. The bed at the studio had a bad mattress and springs could be felt on the back. Room in the main building was very noisy, we could hear the water from the upstairs bathrooms-showers every time used, footsteps, doors were heard too. But overall we had a good stay!! Many thanks

  • Eleni from Greece – 4 December 2024 (9/10)

  • Pinky from United Kingdom – 27 November 2024 (9/10)

I was quite hesitant at first to book this place because of the negative review that I read from this site however I am not a person who complains if the fault is understandable. Upon booking, the owner, sent me an email right away giving the details of the booking and that she will contact me a day before the booking which she did. Sent photos of the clear instructions on how to self check. The photos did not give justice to the place. I stayed with my husband and daughter and we all agree that it was amazing. The room was clean, spacious, 2 big beds, kitchen with utensils, bathroom with toiletries, lots of towels, dining table , fridge . No TV , but I found a TV set in the stock room but I did not bother asking as we dont have time to watch anyway since we need to get the most of the time exploring the area. The location was brilliant , very close to all the shops, restaurants and Rialto bridge.

What could be improved: I hope that the heater will be better as the room even with the heater on , was really cold especially at night. I have to close the first windows (the metal one ) to lessen the noise from the boats that play very loud music until before 12 midnight and it kept us all awake in the middle of our sleep aside from the noise from the music/ singing from the bar accross the room. This is not a fault of the place, its the location. There was no iron but I did not bother to ask or call for this anyway.

    What could be improved: Nothing
