Ca’ alla Colombina Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Ca’ alla Colombina feels like discovering a hidden gem tucked away in one of Venice’s most authentic neighborhoods. This three-star hotel sits quietly on a typical Venetian street in Cannaregio — you know, the kind where locals actually live and work, not just the touristy areas everyone talks about. The entrance is understated in that distinctly Venetian way, where the real charm reveals itself once you step inside. I mean, this is Venice after all, where even the most modest buildings often hide centuries of history behind their weathered facades.

Location & Neighborhood

Honestly, the location is what really sets this place apart — there’s a reason it scored an 8.7 for location. You’re in Cannaregio, which locals will tell you is one of the most livable sestieri in Venice. It’s close enough to San Marco that you can easily walk there (about 15 minutes through some gorgeous back streets), but far enough away that you escape the crushing crowds every evening. The Rialto Market is practically around the corner, and you’ll find yourself on quiet fondamenta where you can actually hear your footsteps echoing off the water. What I really appreciated was being near the Jewish Quarter — there’s this wonderful sense of authentic Venice that you just don’t get when you’re staying right in the thick of the tourist zone.

The Rooms

The accommodations at Ca’ alla Colombina are exactly what you’d expect from a well-run three-star property in Venice — comfortable without being flashy. The rooms have that classic Venetian feel with traditional furnishings and decent-sized windows (well, decent for Venice standards anyway). You’re not getting palatial suites here, but honestly, who spends much time in their room in Venice? The beds are comfortable, the bathrooms are clean and functional, and there’s enough space to spread out your things without feeling cramped. Some rooms have canal views, though don’t expect sweeping vistas — this is more about the intimate Venice experience than grand panoramas.

Daily Life at the Hotel

What strikes me about staying here is how it fits into the rhythm of Venetian life rather than fighting against it. The staff knows the neighborhood — they’ll point you toward the best bacaro for cicchetti or tell you which vaporetto stop is less crowded during rush hour. Breakfast is straightforward Italian fare, nothing fancy but perfectly adequate to fuel your wandering. The common areas have this lived-in quality that makes you feel like you’re staying in someone’s well-maintained home rather than a sterile hotel. There’s WiFi that actually works, which honestly can’t be taken for granted in some of Venice’s older buildings.

Why Couples Love It

It’s easy to see why couples rate this place so highly — there’s something inherently romantic about staying in a quieter corner of Venice where you can actually have a conversation without shouting over crowds. The neighborhood has plenty of intimate restaurants within walking distance, and you can take evening strolls along the canals without dodging tour groups. Ca’ alla Colombina gives you that authentic Venetian experience that couples seem to crave, where you feel like you’re living in the city rather than just visiting it. The value is solid too, which means you can spend your money on great meals and experiences rather than just accommodation.

The apartment's location is excellent, with numerous restaurants and bars nearby. It was clean, remarkably spacious, and fully equipped for a comfortable stay.

What could be improved: Unfortunately, there was an issue with the heating system as it was not functioning properly during our stay.

  • Daniel from New Zealand – 29 March 2024 (8/10)

Spacious apartment. Good heating. Nice shower with good pressure. Clean rooms and linens. Lots of plates. Easy to walk to from the train station. Good selection of pots and pans, oven had an oven tray. Dishwasher a bonus. Shutters block out all the light, which is great for sleeping.

What could be improved: The bathroom smelled. Could do with some bigger drinking glasses. Somewhere to hang wet jackets would be helpful.

  • Mahdavi from Hungary – 22 September 2023 (7/10)

    The location was perfect
And the house itself was nice

What could be improved: There were an air conditioner but it doesn’t work properly and was not efficient at all

  • Pille-mai from Estonia – 1 August 2023 (8/10)

Very good location, close and far enough of tourist epicentre.

  • Janice from United Kingdom – 4 June 2023 (9/10)

Convenient but quiet location. Flat is spacious and clean, with all necessities provided. Good restaurants, bakery and coffee nearby. Water bus at door step. 10-15 min walk to the bus stop and train station. Responsive host with great recommendation in the House Manual.

What could be improved: There was drainage smell from the bathroom. It filled the whole flat when the windows were closed after a day out. Took time to ventilate the flat and get rid of the smell.

  • Nataliia from Switzerland – 1 May 2023 (8/10)

We truly loved our weekends in Venice and the apartment made it even better. Absolutely perfect location, close to the canal, transport, train station and all the attractions. 100% would recommend to stay there and also will come back

  • Liisa from Estonia – 3 February 2023 (8/10)

The location was really good. Everything we needed for cooking and eating was there. Beds were comfy and sheets were clean.

What could be improved: There was that weird like egg smell at first, but I guess we got used to it or it disappeared. The floors were cold so I recommend bringing some slippers.
