Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Ca’ Bacio della Luna last April, right when Venice was shaking off the winter chill but before the summer crowds turned everything into a sweaty mob scene. I’d hopped off the vaporetto at Rialto – you know, that bustling stop where the Grand Canal feels like it’s pulsing with life – and wandered down Calle dell’Olio, this narrow little alley that’s tucked away from the main drag but close enough to everything that matters. Honestly, finding the place was a bit of an adventure; no big signs or anything flashy, just a discreet door that opens into what feels like someone’s cozy old Venetian home. I mean, it’s in the heart of San Marco, steps from Campo San Bartolomeo where locals grab their morning cornetto, but it’s on this quiet side street – well, as quiet as Venice gets, with the occasional gondolier singing off-key in the distance. The check-in was a breeze; the owner, this warm guy named Marco (or was it Matteo? Anyway, super friendly), chatted about the best hidden osterias while handing over an actual brass key – none of that plastic card nonsense. No parking to worry about, obviously, since cars are a myth here, but if you’re lugging bags from the station, it’s a doable 10-minute walk, though those cobblestones can be brutal on wheeled suitcases.
What really won me over, though, was how the place nails that authentic Venetian vibe without trying too hard. The rooms are small – yeah, that’s my one minor gripe, they’re not huge, and there’s no elevator, so pack light if you’re on an upper floor – but they’re charming as hell, with these exposed wooden beams that creak just a little when you walk, and windows that let in the soft glow of street lamps at night. I stayed in one overlooking the calle, and waking up to the smell of fresh bread from the bakery around the corner on Rio Terà San Leonardo was pure magic. Breakfast is simple but spot-on: strong espresso, those flaky pastries, and maybe some prosciutto if you’re lucky, served in a little courtyard that’s shaded by vines – perfect for lingering before heading out. It’s not loaded with fancy amenities, but there’s solid Wi-Fi (surprisingly reliable for an old building), and the bathrooms have that classic marble feel with rain showers that actually get hot right away. You know what? It’s the kind of spot where you feel like you’re living in Venice, not just visiting – no sterile hotel chain vibes here. And at 3 stars with that insane 9.6 rating, it’s a steal, especially off-season when the canals are misty and the whole city feels like yours.
Look, if you’re the type who wants to ditch the tourist traps and actually sink into the rhythm of La Serenissima, this is your spot. It’s close enough to St. Mark’s Square for a quick piazza fix (maybe 5 minutes on foot, dodging the occasional pigeon flock), but far enough that the evenings are peaceful – no blaring music from bars, just the lap of water against stone and maybe a distant church bell. Sure, it might not suit everyone – if you’re after a pool or room service at midnight, keep looking – but for me, it was that perfect balance of comfort and character. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in shoulder season when Venice shows its softer side.

The rooms were well furnished, beds and pillows comfortable, decor was nice. Great for our family of five. Host was readily available to answer questions and checked in to see how we were doing. Great location, walkable to San Marco and Rialto. The restaurant right out on the square – Le Cafe – had delicious pasta, pizza, and bean soup.
