You know, when I first stumbled upon CA CAMMELLO in Cannaregio – that’s the northern sestiere of Venice, right off the beaten path from the Grand Canal madness – I wasn’t sure what to expect from a 3-star spot tucked away at Cannaregio 3403. I mean, Venice can be a total zoo, especially in high season when the cruise ships dump crowds onto the Rialto Bridge, but this place? It’s like a quiet little secret. I arrived via vaporetto from the train station – the No. 1 line drops you at Ca’ d’Oro, and from there it’s a short, meandering walk along the Fondamenta della Misericordia, dodging locals on their way to the market. No cars, obviously, so you’re hauling your luggage over those uneven cobblestones, but honestly, it’s part of the charm. The building itself is one of those classic Venetian palazzos, a bit weathered with that faded pinkish plaster that screams old-world authenticity. Check-in was a breeze; the owner – a chatty guy named Marco, I think – handed over the keys with a quick rundown of the neighborhood spots, like where to grab a cheap spritz at the corner bacaro instead of overpaying in San Marco. My room overlooked a narrow canal, and stepping inside, there was this faint, briny scent from the water mixed with fresh linen – nothing overpowering, just that real Venice vibe.

What really sold me, though, was the private terrace – yeah, it’s right there in the name, but let me tell you, it’s a game-changer. I spent my mornings out there with a coffee from the in-room machine, watching gondolas glide by silently below, the water lapping against the mossy walls. The view’s straight onto the canal, not some postcard-perfect Grand one, but that’s what makes it feel genuine; you get the everyday bustle of delivery boats and neighbors chatting across the water. The room itself is cozy – sort of compact, like most places in Venice, with wooden beams overhead and a bathroom that’s functional but could use a bit more counter space (pack light on the toiletries). No major complaints, though; the bed was comfy enough after a day of wandering, and the AC hummed quietly through those sticky summer nights. I appreciated the little touches, like the free Wi-Fi that actually worked for streaming, and the fact that it’s in a quieter part of Cannaregio – away from the noisy bars on Strada Nova, but close enough to hop over to the Jewish Ghetto for some killer falafel or a synagogue tour. Oh, and if you’re there in winter, bundle up on that terrace; the mist rolls in off the lagoon, making everything feel like a foggy dream.

All in all, with an 8.4 rating that feels spot-on, CA CAMMELLO is perfect if you’re after that authentic Venice experience without the San Marco prices or crowds. It’s not luxurious – no spa or fancy restaurant – but for a 3-star, it’s got heart. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in shoulder season like April or October when the canals are less packed and you can actually hear the church bells without tourist chatter drowning them out. If you’re traveling solo or as a couple, snag a room with the terrace; it’s worth it for those lazy evenings with a glass of prosecco, just soaking in the city. Trust me, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve lived a little piece of Venetian life, not just visited.

  Venice defies logic but it works. So much to see and do and this apartment was perfect base for experiencing what Venice has to offer.

  Beautiful canal view in a lovely quiet location. Communication about property was excellent. We were a group of 4 adults so used the sofa bed which meant no living space other then the kitchen and balcony but we weren't really in the apartment that much of our stay so it wasn't a problem. Great location, close to some great restaurants, bars and a supermarket is close by.

  2nd visit to the apartment. The location couldn't be better. On a relatively quiet canal with lovely buildings both sides so the view is fabulous. Cannaregio is a very lovely area. Less than 5 minutes from great restaurants, bars, and the best gelateria, but without the crowds of the hot spots. Supermarkets close by. 6 minute walk from a Vaporetto stop. The apartment is comfortable and the terrace is just perfect. It's in the shade, an absolute blessing in the summer, and we spent much time there, eating there most evenings.
  Checking in process easy – nice welcome on arrival and contact with owners was friendly, easy and helpful.
  
  What could be improved: Nothing. The freezer section in the fridge was iced up, and some of the kitchen stuff was a little 'tired' ( eg saucepans and plates) but others who eat out more might not even notice that. The positives more than make up, and I'd have no hesitation in coming back.
