Hotel Description
I remember stepping off the vaporetto at the Riva de Biasio stop – you know, that little one in Santa Croce that’s way less chaotic than the ones near San Marco – and weaving through those narrow calli to find Ca’ del Fontego. It’s tucked right on the Grand Canal at Santa Croce 1703, in this historic palazzo that honestly feels like you’ve time-traveled back to Venice’s glory days. I mean, the facade is all weathered stone and arched windows, and as soon as I pushed through the heavy wooden door, there was this subtle scent of aged wood and fresh linen that just hits you – none of that overpowering canal smell you sometimes get in summer. Check-in was a breeze; the staff, these warm locals who chat in that melodic Venetian dialect, handed over the key with a quick tip about the best time to catch the sunset from the rooftop terrace (aim for around 7 pm in June, before the mosquitoes show up). It’s a 4-star spot, but it punches above its weight with that 9 rating – well-deserved, I’d say, especially since it’s not crammed with tour groups like some places over in Dorsoduro.
What really sold me was how the place balances old-world charm with the stuff you actually need as a traveler. My room overlooked the Grand Canal – yeah, the luxury part isn’t hype; think high ceilings with exposed beams, plush bedding that sinks just right after a day of pounding pavements, and a bathroom with marble that’s cool underfoot, even in the humid afternoons. There’s no parking, obviously – this is Venice, so leave the car at Piazzale Roma and hop a water taxi if you’re fancy – but the location makes up for it. You’re steps from the traghetto crossings to San Polo for those cheap gondola rides across the canal, and honestly, it’s quieter here than you’d expect; the lapping water and occasional boat horn are more soothing than noisy, especially at night when the city winds down. I did notice the stairs can be a bit of a hike if you’ve got heavy bags – no elevator in these ancient buildings, you know? – but they helped with that, and the breakfast spread in the morning, with fresh cornetti and cappuccino on that canal-side patio, made any minor gripes fade away. Oh, and if you’re into exploring, it’s a quick walk to the Jewish Ghetto or the Ca’ Pesaro museum – spots that feel more authentic, less like a postcard.
Look, if you’re coming to Venice and want something that feels genuinely lived-in rather than a sterile chain hotel, Ca’ del Fontego is it. I stayed there last spring, dodging the peak crowds, and it became my little sanctuary – sipping prosecco on the terrace as the sun dipped, watching vaporettos glide by. Sure, prices spike in high season, but for the views and that intimate vibe (only a handful of rooms, so it never feels overrun), it’s worth it. You’d care if you’re the type who values those hidden gems over the flashy spots; it lets you soak in the real rhythm of the city, you know?

Beautiful and updated, the quintessential Venice flat overlooking the Grand Canal. Fully stocked kitchen and three full bathrooms! One with a Turkish bath, one with a soaking tub and then one with a freestanding shower, the choice is yours. There's a TV with English channels and a full canal view. There are numerous restaurants nearby and walking distance to the bus or train station.

What could be improved: The washing machine unavailable/broken!Matija from Estonia – 1 June 2024 (6/10)
Outlay and the locationnonvthe grand canal is great…walking distance to Rialto and stone throw away from restaurants and real Venice life… Great support from the staff. Very professional in resolving all issues and situations.
What could be improved: Outdated, cupboard handles coming off, uncomfortable bed and definitely airing needs to be sorted out. Bed is so used up that serious back pain are a must here. Also being thrown out at 10:00 is not worth the high price…Sander from Estonia – 23 May 2022 (9/10)
