Hotel Description

I remember stepping off the vaporetto at Ca’ d’Oro – you know, that gorgeous Gothic palace stop along the Grand Canal – and weaving my way through the quieter alleys of Cannaregio to find Ca’ Girolamo Apartment. It’s tucked away at cannaregio 3027/C, right in the heart of this neighborhood that’s honestly one of Venice’s best-kept secrets for anyone who wants to dodge the San Marco crowds. I mean, it’s just a short stroll from the Santa Lucia train station – maybe 10-15 minutes if you’re not dragging a massive suitcase like I was – and along the way, you pass these little bacari (those hole-in-the-wall wine bars) where locals grab cicchetti and spritz after work. The building itself is one of those classic Venetian spots, with that weathered stone facade and a discreet entrance that makes you feel like you’re slipping into someone’s actual home rather than a hotel. Check-in was a breeze; the host met me right on time with a set of keys and a quick rundown – no fuss, no long lines like at those big chains near the Rialto. Oh, and fair warning: Venice being Venice, there’s no parking anywhere nearby, so if you’re driving, you’ll want to stash your car on the mainland and ferry over.

Inside, it’s got that cozy apartment vibe – think exposed wooden beams overhead, terracotta floors that are cool underfoot even in summer, and these big windows letting in the soft light off the canal (well, it’s more of a rio, but you get glimpses of gondolas drifting by if you’re lucky). We stayed in the two-bedroom setup, which was perfect for my family – spacious enough that the kids didn’t feel crammed, with a full kitchen where I whipped up pasta from ingredients grabbed at the nearby Coop on Strada Nova. The beds were comfy, sort of that firm Italian style that actually helps with the jet lag, and the bathroom had one of those rain showers that makes you linger a bit too long. Honestly, the Wi-Fi was solid for streaming, which surprised me in such an old building, but yeah, there were a couple of creaky floorboards that added to the charm – or kept light sleepers up if you’re sensitive to that. Mornings were my favorite; you’d hear the faint hum of market boats unloading at the Misericordia bridge, and the smell of fresh bread from the panificio around the corner would waft in. It’s not super flashy – no pool or spa, but that’s Venice for you – but it’s rated 8.3 for a reason, and as a 4-star spot, it punches above its weight in authenticity.

What really sold me on Ca’ Girolamo, though, is how it plants you right in real Venetian life. You’re steps from the Jewish Ghetto – I wandered over one evening and caught this impromptu klezmer music session in the campo, which felt worlds away from the tourist traps. Come high season in summer, the area stays relatively quiet after dark, unlike the buzz around Piazza San Marco, but watch out for acqua alta in fall; we got a minor flood warning once, and the host had boots ready – practical touch, that. If you’re traveling with a group or just want to feel like a local for a few days, this place is gold. It’s not perfect – the stairs might be a haul with luggage – but you know what? It made our trip memorable in that unscripted way Venice does best. I’d book it again in a heartbeat, especially for the price.

A simple but nice and clean apartment next to the supermarket. Quiet neighbourhood not in the touristic centre.

  • Maryna from Czech Republic – 15 March 2025 (9/10)

Everything was great. This is the most comfortable apartment for two families. Everything is thought out, 4 separate beds on which it is comfortable to sleep. The living room where we drank coffee in the morning. The location is excellent, in a quiet area. Near the embankment and supermarket. Contactless settlement, the owner is in touch, responded quickly. Impressed by the instructions for living, which was on the table. Everything is written in detail and with the necessary advice. The only thing that was missing was disposable slippers, since the floor is stone, and in the cool spring, it is cold barefoot. Probably in the summer it will be good with such a floor. We were pleased with these apartments.

  • Jsteenhout from Belgium – 26 September 2024 (9/10)

    Quit location, 100 m from well-stocked supermarket.
    Very clean.

  • Farah from United States – 16 August 2024 (8/10)

    Overall clean
    Safe
    Near supermarket

What could be improved: In previous rentals the manager wasn’t so virtual
They took long to respond – we were only there three days two nights

  • Nicola from United Kingdom – 10 August 2024 (9/10)

Absolutely stunning apartment. Absolutely everything you need. Exceptionally clean and very comfortable. Perfectly placed for the town, water bus, supermarket etc. Super part of Venice, quiet but not far from all the hustle and bustle of the busy streets. All the information left in the apartment was fantastic and clear. Loved all the little extras that were provided. If you want perfect accommodation, then this apartment is a must. I wouldn't hesitate to book again.

What could be improved: Nothing, everything was fantastic.

  • Luc from Canada – 5 August 2024 (9/10)

Great Communication with the owners. Easy to enter. Extremely clean and quiet.

What could be improved: Everything was good.

  • David from Serbia – 22 July 2024 (9/10)

The neighbourhood where the apartment is located is phenomenal!!! Filled with great restaurants, bars, cafes in the morning etc. The apartment is spacious, clean & comfy. The bedrooms have a view of the canal and the vibes are incredible (some cool art in the rooms too).

What could be improved: This wouldn't affect my score but there was some construction work on the canals which could wake you up in the morning.

And this didn't affect our stay in any way, but on one of the key pairs (you get two pairs), the key to enter the building itself didn't work.

  • Jeremy from South Africa – 6 July 2024 (9/10)

The location was great. Felt like we were living amongst locals who were friendly. Very easy access to supermarkets and to all the amenities Venice has to offer. The apartment was comfortable.

What could be improved: We originally had a problem with access as we didn’t have internet or roaming. We ultimately resolved this ourselves (by splitting the group and using a local internet cafe) but only after contacting the management who showed little flexibility, patience, or interest in helping us overcome the problem.

  • Travjanet from United States – 9 June 2024 (9/10)

Good location, away from the tourists but close enough. Very clean, bright, airy rooms. Owner arranged water taxis for us with no additional charge. Good communication. Grocery store right around the corner.

What could be improved: It wasn't an issue for me, but you need data for WhatsApp to enter the property for the first time. The kitchen was very sparsely furnished as far as dishes. Only a French press type coffee maker.

  • Nicolas from Canada – 25 May 2024 (9/10)

A very nice and cozy apartment in a quiet neighborhood of Venice, just 20-30 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of the historic district swarming with tourists. The kitchen is well equipped and there is a supermarket literally within a 1-minute walk, which makes it easy to make your own food during the stay for those who want to avoid going to a restaurant for every meal. The owner was super helpful and responsive. We highly recommend this property.

What could be improved: This property is somewhat on the edge of the city, about 35 minutes away from San Marco, but on the upside, it’s very quiet and we enjoyed that.
