Ca’ Riva San Marco Overview

First Impressions

Walking through the narrow streets of Castello to find Ca’ Riva San Marco, you’ll pass locals hanging laundry from ancient windows and small neighborhood cafés that tourists rarely discover. This three-star hotel sits tucked away on Calle del Cagnoleto, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. The building itself has that weathered Venetian charm — you know, the kind where you can almost feel centuries of history in the stone walls, but without the stuffiness that comes with some of the more formal places in the city.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s what I love about staying in Castello — you’re close enough to San Marco Square that you can easily walk there (it’s maybe ten minutes), but far enough away that you escape the crushing crowds of day-trippers. The couples who stay here seem to get it, rating the location a perfect 10, and I can see why. You’re in what locals consider one of the most authentic neighborhoods, where you’ll find actual Venetians going about their daily lives. There’s a small campo nearby where kids play football in the evenings, and the walk to the Arsenale or the Giardini is just a pleasant stroll along quiet canals.

The Rooms

The rooms at Ca’ Riva San Marco are what you’d expect from a well-run three-star property in Venice — clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully arranged to make the most of limited space. Some rooms have canal views (though don’t expect the Grand Canal — these are the quieter, more intimate waterways), while others look out onto typical Venetian courtyards. The bathrooms are modern enough, which is actually a relief in a city where plumbing can be, well, temperamental. Air conditioning works properly too, something you’ll definitely appreciate during those sticky summer months when Venice can feel like a beautiful sauna.

Getting Around

One thing that makes this location particularly smart is how easy it is to reach the rest of Venice. The Arsenale vaporetto stop is close by, giving you direct water bus connections to Murano, the Lido, or back toward the train station. But honestly, you’ll probably find yourself walking most places — Venice is small, and there’s something magical about discovering new routes through the maze of bridges and alleyways. The hotel staff actually knows the neighborhood well and can point you toward the less obvious paths that avoid the tourist bottlenecks.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps people coming back to Ca’ Riva San Marco isn’t just that excellent location score of 9.9 — it’s the feeling that you’re staying somewhere real. You wake up to the sound of boats delivering supplies to local shops, not cruise ship horns. The staff treats you like a neighbor rather than just another tourist, and they’re genuinely helpful with recommendations that go beyond the obvious attractions. For couples especially, there’s something romantic about having this quiet corner of Venice to retreat to after days spent exploring the busier parts of the city. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’ve discovered a secret, even though you’re right in the heart of everything that matters.

  • Maria from United States – 25 June 2024 (9/10)

The location near the Biennale and the terrace views were amazing. The warm greeting from Matteo was timely and thorough. The towels and bedsheets were comfy as well as the beds.
We only wish we could have stayed longer.

What could be improved: There was not a full length mirror or any other dressing mirror other than the bathroom mirror.
The shower stall tile grout looked mildewed, but could just be old, and the location stepping out of it was cramped.
Reception room lacked in electrical outlets.

  • Shannon from United States – 15 June 2024 (9/10)

Our original flight was cancelled and we came in later then expected but Matteo was so accommodating. He was there at the apartment to hand us the keys and give us a tour of the place. It was so comforting.

What could be improved: It would be nice to add a dryer in the apartment.
