Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Casa dell’Artista during a rainy April trip to Venice – you know, that time of year when the crowds thin out a bit, but the canals still have that misty, romantic haze. I’d just hopped off the vaporetto at San Zaccaria, dodging a few puddles on the Riva degli Schiavoni, and it was only a quick five-minute walk down those narrow calli in Castello to reach the place at 5263 Castello. Honestly, it’s tucked away enough that you feel like you’ve escaped the tourist crush around St. Mark’s Square – which is just a 10-minute stroll away if you need your fix of pigeons and overpriced gelato – but without the constant buzz of suitcase wheels on stone. The building itself is this charming old palazzo, sort of weathered in that authentic Venetian way, with faded frescoes peeking out from the walls. Check-in was a breeze; the owner, this warm Italian guy named Marco (I think? Or was it Matteo?), greeted me like an old friend, handing over a massive iron key and chatting about the best nearby osteria for cicchetti. No fancy lobby or anything – it’s more like stepping into someone’s artistic hideaway, with mismatched paintings and sculptures scattered around, which makes sense given the name.
What really won me over, though, was how the place balances that cozy, lived-in vibe with some thoughtful touches that punch above its 3-star weight – I mean, with a 9 rating, it’s no surprise, but still. My room was on the second floor, overlooking a quiet courtyard where you could hear the distant lap of canal water and the occasional church bell from San Giorgio dei Greci nearby. The bed was firm but comfy, with those crisp white linens that smell faintly of lavender (or maybe that’s just my imagination after too much Prosecco). No elevator, mind you – typical for these old buildings – so pack light if stairs aren’t your thing, especially after a day wandering to the Arsenale or that hidden garden at Querini Stampalia. Breakfast was simple but spot-on: fresh croissants, strong espresso, and fruit in a sunny communal area that doubles as a mini art gallery. colp
Actually, the quiet hours here are a godsend, especially if you’re jet-lagged from a long flight – no street noise like you’d get in busier spots, though you might hear a gondolier singing faintly at dusk, which is more charming than annoying. One minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the rooms, but hey, that’s Venice for you – forces you to unplug and actually explore.
All in all, if you’re after an authentic slice of Venetian life without the hefty price tag of those San Marco hotels, Casa dell’Artista is a gem. It’s perfect for solo travelers or couples who want that intimate feel – I met a few artists staying there, sketching in the courtyard – and it’s super walkable to spots like the Biennale pavilions if you’re into that scene. Just book ahead for high season (June to September), when Castello gets lively but not overwhelming. I left feeling like I’d discovered a secret – well, not too secret, given the ratings – and I’d totally go back for that sense of being in a real artist’s home, creaky floors and all.

Beautifully decorated apartment located a few minutes easy walk to the main attractions.
What could be improved: Long walk from the train station difficult pulling suitcases over bridges with stairs. A great idea is to catch the A1 ferry from right out front of the train station to the Railton stop then it’s only a few minutes walk to the apartment.Cara from Australia – 14 January 2025 (8/10)
Great location – easy to walk to everywhere, although also not too busy with tourist crowds, so perfect if you prefer a quieter spot! An authentic Venice apartment overlooking the canal with modern comforts. The apartment had everything we needed and was secure. Host greeted us at apartment and went through everything. Loved the history of home which used to be part of the attached church.
What could be improved: Not a complaint but we did have to pay a security deposit (which was unusual as we haven’t paid a security deposit at any other bookings.com places we’ve stayed in our travels) so worth nothing for other travelers to be prepared for this. It is mentioned in booking information so shouldn’t be a shock. Also have not received it back yet and it’s still pending on my card.Rajiv from India – 13 November 2024 (9/10)
Great place and ambience with all needs fulfilled.
What could be improved: Small bathroomCarlos from Australia – 26 October 2024 (9/10)
Everything was perfect. clean and great location.
great communication as well.Susan from Australia – 6 October 2024 (9/10)
Very good location, easy to find and a 5 minute walk to all the main attractions, situated on a Canal which you can see from the bedroom windows.
What could be improved: The only thing which would be good is a mirror in each of the bedrooms as it only had 1 bathroom, and there were 6 of us trying to get ready, but that is a minor thing.John from United States – 10 August 2024 (9/10)
Location was great, unit was clean. Beds were very comfortable.
What could be improved: One bathroom for 6 people but we expected that, a bit warm in the bedrooms, a bit challenging meeting the man for the keys but he was very nice and helpful. Could use more wastebaskets.Heidi from United Kingdom – 4 August 2024 (9/10)
It is a charming apartment in the heart of Venice, with everything you need for a family holiday. My mum loved the comfortable day-beds. They are so nice after a long day exploring. The location means there are some many options for food and drinks. Hosts are so friendly, helpful and welcoming.

Third time we have used this apartment as family group, lovely apartment with plenty of space. Adults can sleep in peace and teenager can game on line with excellent wifi. Has almost everything conceivable you might need except a really big caffeine addict sized Moka. Location is good – not too far but also not too close to the teeming hoards of day tripper must sees.
What could be improved: Not a problem for me as my knees still work, but not suitable for anyone who has trouble with stairs. Nothing I don't like !Ornella from United States – 25 June 2024 (8/10)
It was a spacious apartment and in a great location.
