Casa Margherita by Wonderful Italy Overview

You know, stumbling upon Casa Margherita by Wonderful Italy felt like one of those lucky breaks in Venice – the kind where you weave through the narrow calli off San Marco and suddenly think, “Hey, this is exactly where I want to be.” I mean, it’s tucked right at San Marco 4727, just a stone’s throw from the bustle of St. Mark’s Square, but far enough that you don’t feel swallowed by the tourist hordes. I remember arriving on a drizzly afternoon last spring, hauling my bag from the Rialto vaporetto stop – it’s about a 10-minute walk if you don’t get lost in the alleys, which, honestly, is half the fun in Venice. The building itself has that classic Venetian charm: faded pinkish walls, wrought-iron balconies, and these old wooden shutters that creak a bit when the wind picks up off the lagoon. Stepping inside, the lobby (well, more like a cozy reception area) smelled faintly of espresso and fresh linens – nothing fancy, but it immediately put me at ease after a long train ride from Milan. Check-in was a breeze; the staff from Wonderful Italy were super laid-back, chatting about the best time to hit the nearby Campo San Zaccaria for a quiet spritz before the evening crowds descend.

What really sets this place apart, though – and I say this as someone who’s stayed in a few spots around Venice – is how it nails that homey, lived-in feel without skimping on the comforts. It’s rated a solid 8.2 for a reason, you know? My room was on the upper floor, with these tall windows overlooking a tiny courtyard – not the Grand Canal views you’d get at pricier joints like the Danieli, but charming in its own right, especially at dawn when the pigeons coo and the church bells from Santa Maria Formosa echo softly. The bed was plush, with those crisp white sheets that make you want to linger, and there’s a little kitchenette stocked with basics – perfect for whipping up a quick pasta if you’re tired of overpriced trattorias. Oh, and the bathroom? Spacious for Venice standards, with hot water that actually stays hot, though the shower pressure could be a tad stronger during peak hours (blame the old plumbing, I suppose). It’s a four-star spot, so expect thoughtful touches like free Wi-Fi that works reliably – crucial for mapping out your next gondola detour – and air conditioning that hums quietly, a godsend in humid summers. But here’s a heads-up: Venice being Venice, there’s no parking (duh, it’s all water), so pack light and embrace the walk. Noise-wise, it’s pretty serene at night, but if you’re a light sleeper, earplugs might help with the occasional late-night revelers stumbling back from Harry’s Bar.

All in all, if you’re plotting a trip to Venice and want something authentic without breaking the bank – especially in high season when everything skyrockets – Casa Margherita is a gem. It’s not flawless; the decor leans a bit modern-minimalist, which might not scream “romantic getaway” to everyone, and breakfast isn’t included (though there’s a great bakery on nearby Calle Fiubera for cornetti). But honestly, waking up to the sounds of the city stirring, grabbing a coffee, and being steps from the Bridge of Sighs or a quick boat to Murano? That’s the Venice magic right there. I’d go back in a heartbeat – maybe next time in autumn, when the fog rolls in and the crowds thin out. If you’re after a spot that feels like your own little slice of La Serenissima, this one’s worth bookmarking.

This apartment is amazing. Very clean, beds are so comfortable I struggled getting out of it. Location is fantastic. Everything we needed was here. The shower was great too. The communication with the company was fantastic. I definitely would recommend this apartment . The rooms are very big and exactly like the pictures.

What could be improved: There's nothing I didn't like, but would maybe have liked more pillows for the rooms.

The location between Rialto and San Marco was very good because most major sights are within walking distance. The apartment was clean and had all of the basics necessary for a short stay. Wifi works well and the cell phone reception was better than in most old stone buildings in crowded Italian cities. The apartment has self check-in, but easy directions were provided. Beds were comfortable, and the large, thick towels are a delight.

What could be improved: There are 27 narrow stairs to climb before reaching the apartment, and those were rough on my 76-year-old knees. The heater in one bedroom did not work, and the heater/towel warmer in the bathroom was also not functioning. The electrical receptacle in the bathroom is so loose that we were afraid to plug the hairdryer into it so I dried my hair in the bedroom. This might be problematic for a man with an electric shaver.

Even though it is only mid-March, there were mosquitoes in the apartment, and the Vapo insect repellant I found there was empty.

Beautiful character property with lovely furniture and plenty of space. Great location

What could be improved: Not much!

  • Anastasia from Greece – 6 January 2025 (8/10)

the location was great, really close to rialto but also quiet. bedrooms were big and comfortable, the living room was rather small but we didn’t stayed long inside the house so we didn’t mind.

What could be improved: the heating wasn’t working all the time, and it was rather difficult to handle so during the night it got a bit cold. Also the toilet flash was broken, but we only stayed for 2 nights and it was new year’s day so they will probably fix it.
