Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Casa Margot after a long vaporetto ride from the airport – you know, the kind where you’re crammed in with everyone’s luggage and the salty lagoon air hits you right away. It’s tucked away on Calle Larga San Marco, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Piazza San Marco, but honestly, it feels like a quiet little hideout in the middle of all that Venetian frenzy. I arrived in the late afternoon during shoulder season – early October, when the crowds thin out a bit but the weather’s still mild – and the check-in was a breeze. The front desk guy, Marco (yeah, fitting name), was this chatty local who immediately pointed out the best route to avoid the tourist traps. No elevators here, mind you – it’s an old building, so lugging bags up those narrow stairs was a workout, but that’s Venice for you. The lobby has this worn-in charm, with faded frescoes on the walls and a faint smell of espresso from the breakfast nook – nothing fancy, but it sets the tone for a real, unpretentious stay.
What really won me over was how the place balances that old-world feel with just enough modern touches to keep things comfortable. My room was on the second floor, overlooking a skinny side canal – not the Grand Canal views you’d get at those pricier spots, but waking up to the soft lapping of water and gondoliers calling out early in the morning? Priceless. The bed was firm, the kind that sinks just right after a day of wandering, and the bathroom, while compact (I mean, everything in Venice is sort of squeezed in), had decent hot water and those little complimentary soaps that smell like lemon and herbs. Breakfast is included – think fresh croissants, yogurt, and strong coffee served in a sunny courtyard – but don’t expect a buffet spread; it’s simple, and that’s part of the appeal. I loved how close it is to spots like the Rialto Bridge, maybe a 10-minute walk along the Mercerie with all its quirky shops, or you can duck into Harry’s Bar for a Bellini if you’re feeling fancy. Noise-wise, it’s surprisingly peaceful at night – the canals quiet down after dark, though you might hear the occasional church bell from San Marco’s Campanile. One minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the rooms, especially if you’re trying to upload photos, but hey, that’s your cue to unplug and explore.
All in all, if you’re after an authentic slice of Venice without breaking the bank, Casa Margot’s a solid choice – that 7.5 rating feels about right, reflecting its no-frills vibe but genuine hospitality. It’s perfect for couples or solo travelers who want to be smack in San Marco without the overwhelming hustle, especially if you time your visit for quieter months like fall or spring. I left feeling like I’d actually lived a bit of local life, you know? Just pack light, wear comfy shoes for those cobblestones, and maybe learn a few Italian phrases – it’ll make chatting with the staff even more fun.

I'm surprised by the negative reviews! Communication with Elisabetta was friendly, clear, timely and professional from booking to checkout. The Junior Suite was wonderful for our family (two adults, one child) – thoughtfully decorated in the Venetian style, no frills (as expected from the star rating) but very clean, spacious and comfortable. Crisp sheets, generous soft towels. Utterly silent. Nice bathroom, good shower. The code system for getting into the hotel and room worked very well. Location was amazing – just around the corner from the Accademia and the Accademia bridge. We were able to leave our suitcase after checkout and pick it up later on our own schedule. We will definitely be back!

What could be improved: The third bed was not very comfortable. Towels replaced once for 4 night stay.Beckley from Spain – 30 September 2024 (9/10)
The host stayed in communication with me until I checked in, suggesting the best ferry route from the Airport. The property was clearly marked with a sign. I used the map app on my phone to navigate the six minute walk from the Ferry stop to the property without any problems. There is a plaza with cafes a few blocks away that is convenient for breakfast. On the day I checked out I was able to leave my luggage at the property all day before picking it up in the late afternoon.
