Corte Contarina Overview
First Impressions
Walking down the narrow Calle Frezzeria in San Marco, you might almost miss Corte Contarina if you’re not paying attention — and honestly, that’s part of its charm. This three-star boutique property sits tucked away in what locals know is the absolute sweet spot of Venice, where you’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough from the cruise ship crowds to actually breathe. The entrance has that understated Venetian elegance that doesn’t scream “tourist hotel,” which I really appreciated.
The Heart of Venice
You know what’s incredible about this location? You’re literally a two-minute walk from Piazza San Marco, but you’d never guess it from how peaceful the street feels in the evenings. I mean, couples rate this spot 9.8 out of 10 for romantic getaways, and after spending time here, I totally get why. The property sits right in that maze of authentic Venetian streets where you’ll find the kind of bacari (wine bars) that locals actually frequent — not the overpriced tourist traps closer to the main square. Plus, you’re walking distance to the Rialto Bridge without having to deal with the chaos of staying right on the Grand Canal.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had that classic Venetian character — think exposed beams and traditional furnishings that actually feel authentic rather than like a theme park version of Venice. What struck me most was how quiet everything was, especially considering you’re in the heart of the action. The windows open onto the courtyard (that’s what “corte” means, by the way), and there’s something really peaceful about that internal space. The bathroom was compact but well-designed — you know how tricky space can be in these historic buildings, but they’ve made it work without feeling cramped.
Exploring the Neighborhood
Here’s what I loved about staying here — you can pop out for an early morning coffee at one of the local bars before the day-trippers arrive, then slip back through these quiet streets in the evening when San Marco transforms into something completely different. The Fenice opera house is practically around the corner, and if you’re into shopping, the boutiques along the Frezzeria are where Venetians actually shop, not just tourists. I found myself using the hotel as a perfect base for those early morning and late evening walks when Venice shows its real personality.
Why Guests Love It
With an 8.8 rating and that incredible 9.9 location score, guests consistently mention how this place gets the balance just right. You’re not paying five-star prices for a location that can’t be beat, but you’re also not sacrificing comfort or authenticity. The staff seems to understand that people choose this spot because they want to experience Venice like locals do — they’ll point you toward the good cicchetti spots and tell you when to visit the basilica to avoid the worst crowds. It’s that kind of insider knowledge that makes a stay here feel less like a typical hotel experience and more like staying with friends who happen to live in the most beautiful city in the world.

Everything is perfect, is near of center

The apartment is just 5 minutes (by foot) from San Marcos and 10 minutes (by foot) from Ponte Rialto. Also, the apartment is located in an area that is visited by many people, but the isolation was very good and no noise was felt.
For the three days of our stay in Venice we didn't spend any money on breakfast, because the owner had left milk, orange juice, rusks, jam and nutella in the apartment. There were also bottle of water and plenty of espresso capsules and tea bags.
Regarding the entrance stairs, they are just a little high and that's it. I don't think it's a problem for adults and children.

The property was lovely and the hosts were especially helpful!
What could be improved: Not so much didn’t like, but lots of stairs that some travellers may find a little difficult. But host was lovely and helpful.Eunmi from Australia – 21 September 2024 (9/10)

The location is the best feature for this apartment. It’s in the centre of town and very close to San Marco. Also a walking distance from Rialto where you can catch the water bus to the train station. The apartment has two rooms which is nice. The small room is suitable for a child or a teen if you’re travelling in a family. The kitchen is basic but well equipped. Was nice to find, milk, juice and water in the fridge when we arrived and there’s also some jam and dry toast for breakfast. Tea kettle and coffee machine too.
What could be improved: We found the stairs to be too much. But I’m
assuming this may be common for Venice. It was fine for us but would be a problem for people with mobility issues.Gayane from Armenia – 1 July 2024 (9/10)
The apartment was very nice, comfy to stay for 3 days. And the host was very nice and helpful. Very good beds, with air conditioning everywhere for hot summer stay.
What could be improved: It was very hot to sit in the balcony, as there was the air conditioner, that made noise and released hot air. And too many staircases before you reach the apartment, so with little kids can be a problem.Vitalina from Germany – 3 June 2024 (9/10)
Great location 👍

We had to go to a B&B first to collect the key, which we did not expect, however, the lady was very helpful and let us wait at the B&B for an hour before walking us to the apartment. Unfortunately, we had so many stairs to lug up our suitcases which is something we never expected being first time to Venice.
However the apartment made up for that, it was so nice, with everything we needed, great location if you know where you going lol. Loved it

We were greeted by a lovely, helpful lady who took us straight to the door and showed us through the place. She helped us organise our ride back to the airport and showed us how to book and pay the tickets. It was extremely helpful. The apartment was super clean, great amenities and quiet. Location was fantastic, right near St Mark's square.
