Cà Mercante di Spezie Overview
First Impressions
Walking through the narrow streets of Castello to find Cà Mercante di Spezie feels like discovering a secret that locals have been keeping to themselves. The name translates to “House of the Spice Merchant,” and honestly, it captures something essential about this three-star gem — there’s an old-world trading post charm that hits you the moment you step inside. The building itself has that weathered Venetian elegance you can’t fake, with original details that remind you this city has been welcoming travelers for centuries.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what’s brilliant about staying in Castello? You’re actually living like a Venetian rather than just visiting. Cà Mercante di Spezie sits on Calle dei Forni, which means “street of the ovens” — and you’ll smell why when you catch the aroma from the local bakeries each morning. It’s a five-minute walk to St. Mark’s Square when you want the iconic stuff, but step out your door and you’re surrounded by authentic osterie and wine bars that tourists rarely find. The location score of 9.2 makes perfect sense when you realize you can walk to the Arsenale, grab groceries at the local market, and still be close enough to hear the bells of San Marco.
The Rooms
The rooms here strike that sweet spot between authentic Venetian character and modern comfort. I mean, you’re not getting cutting-edge design, but the traditional furnishings and exposed beams feel genuine rather than staged. The windows — well, some face the canal and others look onto the courtyard, but either way you’re getting that distinctly Venetian light that photographers obsess over. What impressed me most was how quiet it stays at night, despite being in such a central area. The beds are comfortable enough that you’ll actually want to linger in the mornings instead of rushing out to sightsee.
Daily Life at the Hotel
The staff here operates with that relaxed Venetian rhythm — they’re genuinely helpful but never hovering. Breakfast is served in a cozy room that feels more like someone’s dining room than a hotel restaurant, with fresh pastries from those neighborhood bakeries I mentioned. There’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. Instead, Cà Mercante di Spezie focuses on being a comfortable base in an unbeatable location, and they do that really well.
Why Guests Love It
Couples consistently rate this place highly (9.1 for two-person trips), and I think it’s because the hotel captures Venice’s romantic side without the tourist circus. You can wander back from dinner through empty campos, duck into a bacaro for a nightcap, and feel like you’ve discovered the real Venice. The three-star rating might suggest basic accommodations, but the location in Castello — consistently rated as Venice’s top area — means you’re trading fancy amenities for an authentic neighborhood experience. For travelers who want to explore beyond the postcard version of Venice, this place delivers exactly what you need.
Apartments in Venice suit art students with beam-lined lofts, courtyard wells, and quiet campi.

We had a lovely stay here!
Very clean and spacious apartment.
Excellent location.
To improve:
A few of the lights were not working and a tv would have been a great addition.
I would highly recommend this lovely apartment!Vanessa from United Kingdom – 13 November 2024 (9/10)
Such a beautiful, clean, and well-equipped 2nd floor apartment with confortable beds and garden and street views. Great location in a quiet street and very close to Arsenale vaporetto station. A small shop for essentials is nearby, and the magnificent waterfront walk to the tourist destinations around San Marco is unforgettable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend.

Area was nice and quiet.
Helen from United Kingdom – 20 July 2024 (9/10)
Really easy to find, very clean, air con worked, simple decor – everything we needed.
What could be improved: Needed to press release button to get out of apartment- fine once you knew.Barbara from United States – 26 May 2024 (9/10)
Wonderful location. Close to the vaporetto stop with no bridges so easy to get to with luggage. On a quiet street with a garden view–a real plus for Venice!

The location is amazing and it was easy to enter. The instructions were good to find the house. The flat is beautiful and clean. The host was reactive and was quick to answer.
What could be improved: The instructions to take out the garbage are unclear. It says that you have to take it out, but not where. In fact, it's just out the door, but we could only find this out by seeing the cleaners in the streets in the morning. Also, on the first evening, we had trouble finding the keyhole on the door (not very visible at night) and when I asked by message the host, the host was a bit rude and not super helpful. We found the keyhole on the next morning.Ruth from United Kingdom – 1 May 2023 (9/10)
Quiet location yet close to Doge's palace and a vaporetto stop. Also comfortable beds and good shower.
What could be improved: All good.Nicola from United Kingdom – 3 October 2022 (8/10)
The location of the apartment was fantastic, very easy to find and access.
The apartment was well presented and clean. Wow!! The aircon was a real blessing as it was so hot in Venice this year.
The apartment was a 10 min walk to St Mark's which although very touristy you have to see as it is so beautiful.
Just up from it is Garibaldi St (the widest St in Venice due to its canal being filled in) theres lots of places to eat, drink chill and soak up the atmosphere in beautiful magical Venice.
We really enjoyed our stay and being in Venice.
A lovely little apartment!
What could be improved: Communication on how to access the apartment was quie late, but got sorted.
A few areas of the apartment were a little tired and and in need of attention.
Some equipment also needed replenishing and fixing. More cutlery, washing line needs sorting and cooker hood switches missing.
The bedding was clean and functional but dated, so new bedding, blankets and more pillows would definitely be nice.
These are small things and easy to rectifySara from United Kingdom – 5 June 2022 (9/10)
Lovely apartment in one of the best areas in Venice, quiet, calm, immaculately clean, bright and with a view on an internal beautiful garden. Highly recommended!
What could be improved: All perfect
