I remember stumbling upon Good Wine Apartments during one of those hazy Venetian afternoons last spring – you know, when the fog rolls off the lagoon and everything feels a bit dreamlike. I’d just hopped off the vaporetto at Ca’ d’Oro, dodging the usual throng of day-trippers on Strada Nova, and honestly, it was a relief to veer into the quieter alleys of Cannaregio. The address is right there at 3557, tucked away in a spot that’s authentically local – think narrow calli lined with those weathered ochre buildings, where you can hear the gentle lap of canal water against stone rather than the constant buzz of San Marco’s crowds. Walking up, I noticed the entrance is unassuming, almost like slipping into a friend’s place; no grand lobby, just a warm buzz from the intercom and a quick check-in with a staff member who chatted about the best nearby cicchetti spots (try the ones at Al Timon, just a five-minute stroll away). It’s not flashy, but that’s Venice for you – everything’s built on history, and this place feels like it’s been here forever, with those creaky wooden beams and faint scent of aged brick that hits you as soon as you step inside. Oh, and fair warning: like most spots in the city, there are stairs – no elevators, so pack light if you’re not up for a bit of a workout.

What really won me over, though, was how the apartments blend that old-world charm with just enough modern comfort to make you forget you’re in a floating city with no cars or easy grocery runs. Each unit – I stayed in one overlooking a tiny courtyard – has this cozy setup with a kitchenette that’s actually functional (stock up at the Rialto market, about 15 minutes on foot, for fresh produce and that amazing pecorino). The name isn’t just for show; they curate a little selection of local wines in the room – nothing over-the-top, but a crisp Prosecco waiting on arrival that pairs perfectly with watching the sunset from your window. It’s rated 9.2 for good reason: the beds are plush, the Wi-Fi’s reliable (crucial for mapping out those labyrinthine streets), and everything’s spotless, though I will say the bathrooms are on the compact side, which is par for the course in these historic conversions. Mornings were my favorite – waking to the muffled sounds of gondoliers calling out and the smell of espresso from the cafe downstairs. It’s in a sweet spot, too: close enough to the Jewish Ghetto for those atmospheric walks (go early to avoid the tour groups), but far from the high-season madness that clogs the Grand Canal by midday. Well, sort of – even here, July gets busy, so aim for shoulder seasons if you want peace.

Look, if you’re the type who wants Venice without the tourist trap vibe, this is your spot – it’s got that 4-star polish but feels lived-in, like you’re borrowing a local’s pied-à-terre. I’ve recommended it to friends who hate overpriced hotels, and they’ve all come back raving about how it lets you actually live the city, cooking your own meals or just wandering back after a late-night spritz at a bacaro. Sure, it’s not perfect (noise from passing boats can sneak in at dawn), but that’s what makes it real.   Away from the crushing crowds yet still within reasonable walking distance to the most highlights and the railway/bus station there lies this spacious, well-equipped, well-heated (in winter) apartment with great vistas of the waterway, where you may soak up the city's original atmosphere, strolling, sitting in charming restaurants and bars, and paying visits to the places out of the beaten path. Wonderful place.

  Absolutely wonderful! Perfect location in a real neighborhood, just a 5-minute stroll to the Strada Nova, but closer to some marvelous local ciccheteria. Giacomo is a great host, always available via text, even arranged a porter to take our things to Santa Lucia on checkout.
