Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon the Hidden Gem in Venice almost by accident last summer – well, not really stumbling, since it’s tucked right into the bustle of Piazza San Marco at 1161, but you know what I mean. I’d just hopped off the vaporetto at San Marco Vallaresso, dodging the usual throng of tourists snapping selfies with the pigeons, and there it was, this unassuming 4-star spot that doesn’t scream “luxury” from the outside but pulls you in with its faded frescoes and that classic Venetian charm. Honestly, being smack in the middle of San Marco means you’re steps from the Basilica’s golden mosaics and the Doge’s Palace – I mean, you can hear the Campanile bells chiming every hour, which is magical at dawn but sort of a wake-up call if you’re not an early riser. The address puts you right where the action is, but it’s hidden enough that you feel like you’ve found a secret – no massive tour groups blocking the entrance, just a quiet side door off the piazza that leads into a cozy lobby smelling faintly of espresso and old wood polish. Checking in was a breeze; the staff – mostly locals who’ve probably lived in Venice their whole lives – chatted about the best time to avoid the crowds (early mornings or after 8 PM, when the day-trippers head back to Mestre) and even hooked me up with a map marked with hidden calle like Calle Larga XXII Marzo for some offbeat shopping.
What really sets this place apart, though, is how it balances that old-world feel with stuff that actually matters to travelers. The rooms aren’t huge – Venice real estate, right? – but mine had these high ceilings with exposed beams and a view straight onto the piazza’s edge, where you could watch gondoliers gliding by without the canal stench hitting you too hard (thanks to some clever window sealing, I guess). It’s rated a solid 9.2 for a reason; the beds are comfy, with those crisp linens that make you sink in after a day of wandering, and the breakfast spread – oh man, fresh cornetti and cappuccino served in a little courtyard that’s surprisingly quiet despite the location. I appreciated the practical bits, like free Wi-Fi that didn’t glitch out (rare in these historic buildings) and a small fridge for stashing your own prosecco from the Rialto Market, which is just a 10-minute walk across the bridge. That said, it’s not perfect – the noise from the piazza can filter in during peak season (June to August, when it’s packed), so light sleepers might want earplugs, and there’s no parking, obviously, since cars are a no-go in Venice, but they do offer vaporetto ticket deals if you ask.
All in all, if you’re looking for a spot that feels authentically Venetian without the over-the-top prices of those Grand Canal palaces, this hidden gem is it. I’ve stayed in fancier places, but there’s something about waking up to the sound of seagulls and that salty lagoon air that sticks with you – plus, it’s got that high rating because it delivers on the essentials without trying too hard. Go in shoulder season, like April or October, when the crowds thin out and you can actually enjoy a spritz at a nearby bacaro without elbowing through hordes. Trust me, you’ll leave feeling like you lived a little piece of Venice, not just visited it.

Great location near San Marco square. The apartment included access to small kitchen which was nice. We saw everything we had hoped to see in Venice and took a carnival mask making class on one of the islands. Water taxi to train was very convenient.

We absolutely loved our stay at this charming little 3-room “hotel”. The location was perfect, the room beautifully styled, and Annalisa incredibly helpful. It really felt like a special find. The only reason we didn’t give it a full 10/10 is due to a bit of noise from neighboring rooms, likely due to thin walls or limited insulation. Still, it didn’t take away from the overall experience — we’d definitely come back!

The property was located in a convenient place, making it easy to travel around. The room also had sufficient amenities and was not too cramped. Although we originally had concerns about safety, we encountered no issues even late at night, and each room door had a secure lock. Lastly, while we did not get to meet in person, the host (Annalisa) was lovely to speak to online, and she provided clear instructions and was friendly and responsive.

Great location in the heart of Venice, close to many shops, bars and restaurants. Apartment was very clean. A bright and comfortable room plus a spacious en suite bathroom. There's also a very useful communal kitchen for guests to use. We appreciated the treats and tea/coffee facilities too! Host was very helpful and responsive.

It was great value for money for our January stay in Venice. The room was comfortable, warm and clean. There's a kitchen with coffee machine, which was important to us. It's only a short walk from San Marco, just as described.

This apartment is very thoughtful layout for guests, common area of living room and full kitchen to shared with other guests which add value, very clean room and bathroom have good pressure hot water shower, we did some cooking and store our foods in the refrigerator's assigned shelf, which is great, about 10 minutes walk to drop off laundry service and St. Mark square is near by, we love this lovely apartment and central location, and highly recommend to anyone booking this popular apartment.
