Hotel Description
I remember stepping off the train at Santa Lucia station – you know, that bustling hub where everyone’s dragging suitcases over the Ponte degli Scalzi – and thinking, thank goodness Hotel Agli Artisti is just a quick five-minute walk away. No need to wrestle with a vaporetto right off the bat, especially if you’re lugging bags after a long journey from the mainland. It’s tucked down Calle Priuli Cavalletti, this narrow little alley off the main drag in Cannaregio, which honestly feels like a hidden gem compared to the tourist crush around San Marco. I arrived in the late afternoon last spring, right as the sun was dipping behind those old brick buildings, casting everything in this golden haze. The check-in was straightforward – the front desk guy was chatty but efficient, handing over a key card with a quick rundown of breakfast times (7 to 10 a.m., nothing fancy but decent coffee and croissants). Oh, and pro tip: if you’re driving in (though who does that in Venice?), there’s no on-site parking, so you’ll want to stash your car at Piazzale Roma and hoof it or grab a water taxi. The place has that classic Venetian vibe – creaky wooden floors underfoot, faint echoes of church bells from nearby San Geremia, and yeah, sometimes a whiff of canal water if the wind’s right, but it’s all part of the charm, I mean, you’re in Venice, right?
What really stuck with me about Agli Artisti is how it nails that sweet spot for a 3-star spot without pretending to be more than it is. The rooms are compact – mine overlooked a quiet courtyard with some potted geraniums that added a pop of color – but clean as a whistle, with air conditioning that actually works during those sticky summer months (trust me, you’ll need it in July). Bed was firm, sheets crisp, and there’s a small fridge for stashing prosecco from the corner market on Strada Nova. Breakfast is served in this cozy ground-floor room with exposed beams – think fresh fruit, yogurt, and those little packaged jams – nothing gourmet, but it fuels you up for wandering. Honestly, the location’s the star here; you’re steps from the Cannaregio Canal, where locals zip by on bikes early morning, and it’s an easy stroll to the Jewish Ghetto for some authentic history or to grab cicchetti at a bacaro like Al Timon (their fried meatballs are killer). Noise-wise, it’s pretty mellow at night – no rowdy crowds like near the Rialto – though you might hear the occasional boat horn if your window’s open. One minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the back rooms, so if you’re working remotely, ask for one facing the street. But overall, it’s got that lived-in feel, with staff who’ll point you to hidden spots like the quiet gardens in Sant’Alvise, away from the day-trip hordes.
Look, if you’re not chasing five-star luxury and just want a solid base to dive into real Venice – the kind where you can pop out for gelato at 10 p.m. or catch a sunset ferry to Murano – this place delivers without emptying your wallet. I stayed three nights and left feeling like I’d gotten way more than the 7.4 rating suggests; it’s authentic, unpretentious, and perfectly positioned for those off-the-beaten-path adventures. Just pack light – those stairs to the upper floors are no joke – and embrace the quirks. You’d be hard-pressed to find better value in Cannaregio, especially come high season when everything else jacks up prices.

What could be improved: NothingТатьяна from Russia – 23 February 2025 (8/10)
Extremely comfortable location, 5 mins to Train station.
What could be improved: For long stay I’d probably not recommend it, as no soundproof at all(Elio from Albania – 17 January 2025 (6/10)
What could be improved: The room was good, breakfast great variety
Eildon from United Kingdom – 12 November 2024 (8/10)
Good location. Friendly and helpful staff.
What could be improved: My main issue was that the room was quite noisy. There seemed to be no soundproofing so you could even hear next door snore!Camille from United Kingdom – 9 November 2024 (8/10)
The location was great. Just 3 min away from the train station and is located not too far from the main plaza. Breakfast was good although basic. The family room we got was very spacious. The bathroom was clean and modern, and warm enough for the winter. The only downside was that the first night was horrible with all the noise coming from the occupants next door (who were a group of teens probably on a school trip- we could hear a lot of screaming, banging the walls and even breaking glass up until 2 am maybe), but the next night, when they were gone it was quiet, apart from slight squeaky sound from the ceiling which you can expect from an old building.
In summary, after my stay at this hotel, i will probably choose another hotel the next time I visit Venice, knowing that affordable hotels like this cater to big tour groups which can really disturb your peace when you are on a holiday.
What could be improved: The noise from the people on the next room.Collins from United States – 9 October 2024 (8/10)
Very convenient location to get to and from the train station. Able to store our bags for free prior to check in so we could enjoy the city. Room was comfortable but small. Staff was nice and helpful.
What could be improved: Elevator was very small and does not accommodate much luggage. There was a lot noise from the walkway below our window which continued into the night. Provided breakfast was minimal compared to other places we stayed at.Heimy from Argentina – 17 September 2024 (8/10)
Rooms are old fashion but clean and nice. Staff was super nice
Thomas from Netherlands – 13 September 2024 (8/10)
Great location for a great price for a group of travelers.
Nancy from United States – 25 August 2024 (8/10)
The breakfast and the staff are excellent.
What could be improved: Need a table in the room and 2 luggage racks for guests to put their bags and luggage. A pot so the guest can make tea or coffee anytime.
