Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Hotel Città Di Milano after weaving through those narrow calli off Campo San Zulian – you know, that little square tucked away from the main tourist drag in San Marco, where locals still grab their morning espresso at that unassuming bar on the corner. I’d just hopped off the vaporetto at San Zaccaria, dodging the crowds spilling out from Piazza San Marco, and honestly, it was a relief to find this place without getting lost in the maze. The hotel’s right there at San Marco 590, in this centuries-old building that looks like it’s been part of Venice forever – faded pinkish facade with those classic shuttered windows, and a tiny entrance that you might miss if you’re not paying attention. I arrived in late spring, when the canals start smelling a bit more briny from the rising tides, but the air inside was cool and welcoming, like stepping into someone’s well-loved home. Check-in was a breeze; the front desk guy – Marco, I think his name was – chatted about the best time to hit the Rialto Market (early morning, before the tour groups descend) while handing over my key, no fuss with long lines or anything.

What really stuck with me about this 3-star spot is how it nails that authentic Venetian vibe without trying too hard. The rooms are on the smaller side – I mean, this is Venice, where space is at a premium – but mine had this cozy setup with wooden beams overhead and a view of the campo below, where you could hear the distant chime of San Zulian church bells mixing with the murmur of passersby. It’s not silent, especially in peak season when the streets buzz until late, but earplugs sorted that out for me, and actually, the faint hum of life outside made it feel more alive than some sterile high-rise. Breakfast was simple but solid – fresh cornetti, decent coffee, and those little pots of yogurt – served in a room that opens onto a quiet courtyard, which is a godsend for escaping the midday heat. No parking worries here, obviously, since cars are a myth in Venice, but they can arrange water taxi pickups if you’re lugging heavy bags. Oh, and a small critique: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the upper floors, sort of like the city’s own unpredictable tides, but it worked fine for checking maps to wander over to the Accademia Bridge or that hidden bacaro on Calle della Mandola for cicchetti.

All in all, if you’re after a no-frills base that’s smack in the heart of San Marco – like, a five-minute stroll to St. Mark’s Basilica or the Doge’s Palace, without the outrageous prices of the fancier joints – this place delivers. It’s got that 7.6 rating for a reason: reliable, charming in its simplicity, and perfect for travelers who want to feel immersed rather than pampered. I left thinking, well, Venice is chaotic enough; sometimes you just need a spot that lets the city shine while keeping things real. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season when the crowds thin out and you can actually hear the water lapping against the foundations at night.

Reviews

  • Karen from Mexico – 16 March 2024 (8/10)

As some reviews say it is quite a small room and bathroom but I was only one person and I felt comfortable in it. I felt the location was good, there are a ton of stores and restaurants near it and opened at night too. Even if some say the decoration is old I find it quite charming. I didn't find it really dark is just the light is yellow kind.Breakfast was very simple but I think maybe just good to have something on the stomach🤷

What could be improved: Maybe the location is tricky, but someone on the restaurant saw me searching the hotel and nicely guided me to the door :). I arrived around 6 and had no problem but is true that around 9 there is no one on the reception.

Great location and very friendly staff.

  • Patricia from United States – 17 November 2024 (9/10)

Great location, between S. Marco and Rialto; clean; a bit basic but good value for money; decent breakfast (included cold meats and cheeses with small bread rolls, not just cereals and croissants); has a lift.

  • Dominique from United Kingdom – 14 October 2024 (7/10)

The hotel was lovely and clean and a great location, staff were friendly.

What could be improved: I’m celiac and dairy intolerant which was not catered for, though they did try but due to a mix up on behalf of the staff I had no food for breakfast only coffee. Unfortunately the room’s window had an awful view but we were only there for one night.

  • Katerina from Greece – 8 October 2024 (8/10)

Excellent location close both to St Mark’s square and Rialto. Very friendly staff and convenient checkout at 11:00. Several power outlets in the room.

What could be improved: The property is a bit tricky to find. The reception area could have a couple of a seat. The shower should have either a cabin or a small dividing wall so that the water can stay in.

  • Sanet from South Africa – 3 October 2024 (8/10)

Location was convenient and friendly staff

  • Hazel from United Kingdom – 30 September 2024 (8/10)

We really loved the location. The restaurant below our window was also excellent.

The hotel itself is typically traditional Venetian. Gold and red bedrooms with walls covered with fabric instead of wallpaper. Very nice

Lovely shutters and a church as you looked out the window.

The reception was very helpful and friendly

What could be improved: The breakfast could be improved. We were there 2 nights so it wasn’t an issue but compared to other Italian breakfasts we’ve had the choice was small.

Id like you to see more cheeses and tomatoes

  • Madyl from Australia – 21 September 2024 (7/10)

It's in the heart of Venice easy to walk to San Marcos square and other attractions.

What could be improved: I had a single room with a small window and not much natural light but that's typical of that style of building.
