Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Hotel Locanda Canal during my last trip to Venice – you know, that time I decided to ditch the overpriced spots in San Marco and venture into Castello, which honestly feels more like the real Venice anyway. It’s tucked away on Fondamenta del Remedio, this quiet little canal-side street that’s just a short wander from the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop – I mean, if you’re coming from the airport, hop on the Alilaguna boat and you’re there in under an hour, no taxis or traffic to worry about since, well, it’s Venice. The building itself is one of those classic Venetian palazzos, all faded pink stucco and wrought-iron balconies overlooking the water, and when I first pushed open the heavy wooden door, the faint salty tang of the lagoon hit me right away, mixed with that old-stone smell you get in these historic places. Check-in was a breeze; the owner – this chatty guy named Marco, I think – handed over the keys with a quick rundown of the neighborhood, pointing out how we’re just a five-minute stroll from the Arsenale, where you can catch those free art exhibits during the Biennale if you’re timing it right (aim for odd-numbered years, folks, it’s less crowded in the shoulder seasons like April or October).
What really won me over, though, was how the place nails that cozy, lived-in vibe without trying too hard to be fancy – it’s a solid three-star, after all, with a 7.6 rating that feels spot-on for what you get. My room was on the second floor, overlooking the canal, and yeah, it’s compact like most in Venice (don’t expect to swing a cat in there), but the high ceilings and those creaky wooden floors added this charming, almost nostalgic touch – sort of like staying in your eccentric aunt’s attic, but with clean linens and a decent en-suite bathroom. The bed was comfy enough after a day of pounding the pavements, and I appreciated the little things, like the free Wi-Fi that actually worked (a rarity in some older spots) and the continental breakfast downstairs – fresh croissants, espresso that packs a punch, and those tiny jars of apricot jam that taste homemade. Noise-wise, it’s pretty peaceful at night; the canal’s not a major thoroughfare, so you might hear the occasional gondola splash or church bells from nearby San Giorgio dei Greci, but nothing that kept me up. That said, if you’re a light sleeper, pack earplugs for the summer months when tourists flock to the nearby Riva degli Schiavoni – it can get a bit lively down there during evenings.
Honestly, if you’re looking for an authentic slice of Venice without breaking the bank, this is the kind of place that sticks with you. It’s not glitzy – no spa or rooftop bar here – but that’s the appeal; you’re steps from hidden gems like the Libreria Acqua Alta bookstore (go early to avoid the lines) or that unassuming osteria on Calle della Madonna where locals grab cicchetti. I left feeling like I’d actually experienced the city, not just skimmed the surface, and for around 100-150 euros a night depending on the season, it’s a steal. Just book ahead if you’re hitting peak times, and maybe request a canal-view room – trust me, waking up to that watery light filtering through the shutters makes all the difference.

I was in venice for 3 nights, enjoyed the accommodation. Best price, great area, very close to St Marks Square ( acouple of minutes walk) had a lovely view of a a waterway, enjoyed the balcony/therace. Clean room, no issues. Great staff, very helpfull. Breakfast was great, Loved the keys. Not as expensive as all others in the area.
What could be improved: Small bathroom, a little old but still working fine. Wifi was problematic, but no issue for me since i just "visited " the room to sleep and shower. I didn't even bother them about it. Venice is beautifull.Irina from Austria – 26 January 2025 (8/10)

Beautiful experience! The staff were incredibly helpful! It was our first stop on a taste of Italy journey and they made it just perfect. Location is great. It is very old so don’t expect perfect but it was exactly what we wanted. Our room overlooked the canal which was lovely. The sweetest lady made coffee for us that was one of our best so far! (Wish I had written names) The staff helped us to plan things to do and recommended the very best restaurants including calling for reservations and writing in detail what to do to exit the island! So exceptional. Again, sorry we aren’t naming but they were all so great! Would highly recommend this hotel to friends. Thank you all so much for your kindness.

The location was great – maybe canal view is a little overstated and too hot for to get much use out of the small balcony. The staff were very nice and breakfast was ample! They were able to extend my stay when I needed it.
What could be improved: It is looking its age, but aren’t we all! I was told the phone worked but I could not make a call. A bit of a squeeze in the bathroom and in spite of aircon the room was not ever cool (but Venice very hot and humid at present).Oleg from Germany – 5 January 2024 (8/10)
Perfect location near Basilica di San Marco. The hotel has a wonderful Venetian charm, an old but exceptional building. Staff very nice and friendly.

The breakfast was delicious. It was the only hotel that we have breakfast included and it was very convenient.
