Hotel Description
You know, the first time I stumbled upon Hotel Lux, I was dragging my suitcase over those uneven cobblestones in Castello, right after hopping off the vaporetto at San Zaccaria. It’s tucked away on Calle Delle Rasse, just a stone’s throw from the Doge’s Palace – honestly, you can hear the bells from St. Mark’s Square chiming away if you crack a window open. Venice being Venice, there’s no parking to worry about (good luck with a car here anyway), but getting there on foot from the stop is a quick five-minute weave through those narrow alleys that smell faintly of salt water and fresh bread from the nearby bakeries. I mean, it’s not the glitzy San Marco side, but Castello feels more like where actual Venetians hang out – you know, with little shops selling handmade masks and that one corner bar where locals grab an espresso before the tourist rush hits.
Stepping inside, it’s got that cozy, no-frills vibe you’d expect from a solid 3-star spot – think exposed wooden beams in the lobby and a reception desk that’s seen better days but staffed by folks who actually know their way around the city. Check-in was a breeze; the guy behind the counter chatted about avoiding the crowds by heading to the Arsenale early in the morning – a tip that saved me from the midday madness. My room was on the second floor, overlooking a quiet canal (well, quiet until the gondoliers start their serenades around dusk), with these heavy velvet curtains that block out the light perfectly for those jet-lagged naps. The bed was comfy enough, though the pillows were a bit on the flat side – nothing a quick ask at the desk couldn’t fix. Breakfast is served in this little courtyard area, nothing fancy, just croissants, fruit, and decent coffee that hits the spot before you dive into the day. Oh, and fair warning: the walls are thin, so you might catch snippets of Italian conversations from the street below, especially during Carnevale season when everything amps up. But hey, that’s part of the charm, right? It sort of immerses you in the rhythm of the place – the distant hum of boats on the lagoon, the occasional splash against the walls.
All in all, if you’re looking for a spot that’s authentically Venetian without breaking the bank, Hotel Lux is a gem – rated around 7.1 for a reason, it’s reliable but not over-the-top luxurious. I’d recommend it for couples or solo travelers who want to be smack in the action but with a dash of local flavor; families might find the stairs a hassle since there’s no elevator in the older wing. Come in shoulder season, like early spring, when the alleys aren’t packed, and you’ll get that peaceful side of Venice – sipping spritz at a nearby osteria on Campo San Filippo e Giacomo, watching the world go by. Trust me, it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve got your own little corner of the city, flaws and all.

We stayed for 2 days, therefore, the location was perfect. However, we were relocated to a different house after check-in, the house was right around the corner, around 50 meters from the original address. It was not surprising reading other reviews so it did not bother us. Staff was nice but also had not much contact with them. The room itself was small but worked for us. AC and WiFi worked well which was a plus. We did not have breakfast at the hotel so we cannot say anything about it. All in all I think it’s good value for money considering Venice prices.
What could be improved: The only thing that was mocking us was that there was no elevator in the other building so we had to carry our luggage 3 floors up on tight stairs.Nrecaj from Kosovo – 6 July 2024 (8/10)
