Hotel Description
I remember the first time I wandered into Campo Santa Maria Formosa – it’s this charming little square in Venice’s Castello district, tucked away from the tourist crush around San Marco, but close enough that you can stroll there in about 10 minutes if you know the shortcuts through those narrow calli. Honestly, arriving at Hotel Palazzo Vitturi felt like stepping back in time; the building’s this old palazzo with faded frescoes on the walls and creaky wooden floors that sort of whisper under your feet. I got there by vaporetto to the Ospedale stop – super easy, no lugging bags over too many bridges – and check-in was a breeze, even though I showed up sweaty and late from a delayed train. The staff, a mix of locals who actually live in the neighborhood, chatted with me about the best time to hit the nearby market (mornings, before the delivery boats clog the canals). My room overlooked the campo, with these tall shuttered windows that let in the soft glow of evening lamps – you know, that golden Venetian light that makes everything feel romantic, even if you’re solo like I was. But fair warning, the square can get a bit noisy in the mornings with church bells from Santa Maria Formosa ringing out – it’s authentic, though, not like some sterile hotel chain.
What really sold me on the place was how it balances that historic vibe without feeling stuffy or overpriced for a 3-star spot – I mean, with an 8.9 rating, it’s punching above its weight. The rooms are cozy, not huge (Venice real estate, right?), but mine had this antique armoire and a surprisingly comfy bed that didn’t sag like some older places I’ve crashed in. Breakfast was simple but spot-on: fresh cornetti, cappuccino that actually tasted like it was made with care, and you eat in this courtyard that’s shaded by vines – smells like jasmine in spring, which is when I visited, avoiding the sweaty summer crowds. Oh, and parking? Forget it, this is Venice – no cars, but they can arrange water taxi pickups if you’re fancy. I loved wandering out the door to grab cicchetti at that tiny bar on Calle della Madonna, just a stone’s throw away, or popping over to the Libreria Acqua Alta bookstore for some quirky browsing. It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the thicker-walled rooms, and if you’re light-sensitive, bring an eye mask for those early sunrises – but those quirks make it feel real, you know? Like you’re staying in someone’s historic home rather than a cookie-cutter hotel.
All in all, if you’re after a slice of genuine Venice without the San Marco price tag, Palazzo Vitturi is a gem. It’s quiet in the off-season (think November, when the fog rolls in and the city’s yours), but buzzes nicely in shoulder months without overwhelming you. I left feeling like I’d uncovered a local secret – well, sort of, since it’s rated so high, but it still has that under-the-radar charm. Book it for the atmosphere, the friendly faces, and that unbeatable spot in Castello where you can live like a Venetian for a few days. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself when you’re sipping spritz on the campo steps at sunset.

Our recent stay at this hotel was, in a word, perfect. From the moment we arrived, the service was impeccable – warm, attentive, and genuinely helpful, making us feel instantly welcome. Our room was beautifully appointed, spotlessly clean, and incredibly comfortable, offering a peaceful retreat after exploring the city. The location was superb, allowing easy access to Venice's magic while still feeling serene. Every single detail, from the quality of the breakfast to the ambiance of the common areas, exceeded our expectations. We honestly couldn't find a single fault. A truly exceptional experience that made our Venetian trip unforgettable. Highly recommended!
