Il Palazzo Experimental Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Il Palazzo Experimental in Venice, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical tourist hotel. The entrance sits quietly along a canal in Dorsoduro — honestly, I almost walked past it the first time because it blends so seamlessly into the neighborhood’s authentic Venetian architecture. This four-star property occupies a restored 16th-century palazzo, and the moment you step inside, there’s this perfect balance between historical grandeur and contemporary design that actually works.
The Dorsoduro Advantage
You know what’s brilliant about this location? Dorsoduro is where Venetians actually live and work, not just where tourists take photos. I mean, you’re literally steps from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Punta della Dogana, but you can also grab morning coffee at a neighborhood bar where locals read their newspapers. The area feels authentic in a way that San Marco never quite manages — plus, couples seem to absolutely love it here, which makes sense given how romantic those quiet canal-side walks become in the evening.
The Room Experience
My room had this wonderful mix of Venetian character and modern comfort that surprised me. The ceilings were high with original beams, but the bathroom was sleek and contemporary — no weird compromises between old and new that you sometimes get in historic buildings. What I really appreciated was how quiet everything felt, despite being in the heart of the city. The windows actually open (not always a given in renovated palazzos), and there’s something magical about falling asleep to the gentle sound of water lapping against the building’s foundation.
Dining and Daily Rhythms
The breakfast setup here is refreshingly straightforward — continental and buffet options that focus on quality rather than overwhelming choice. I found myself lingering over coffee longer than usual, partly because the dining space has this relaxed energy that doesn’t rush you out the door. The restaurant takes a modern approach to Venetian cuisine, and while I only ate there once, the ingredients were clearly sourced with care. What struck me was how the staff seemed to know the neighborhood — they gave me directions to a tiny bacaro that I never would have found otherwise.
Why Guests Love It
There’s something about Il Palazzo Experimental that just gets Venice right. It’s sophisticated without being stuffy, historic without feeling like a museum, and located in a part of the city that feels real rather than performative. The location score of 9.4 makes perfect sense when you experience how easy it is to explore both the major sights and the hidden corners that make Venice special. You’re close enough to everything that matters, but far enough from the cruise ship crowds that you can actually breathe and enjoy the city’s rhythm.

Everything was perfect: the hotel staff, breakfast, location and the room itself
What could be improved: Charging of one night cost as a safety deposit was not convenient. This problem is that the hotel does not use it as a part of the total payment and does not return it immediately after check out. They charge this amount of money a few days in prior to check in and then do not accept nor reject this transfer. So the deposit is locked for pretty long period of time and then is returned as an unclaimed funds according to your bank policy (in my case it is slightly longer than one month)Iannis from United Arab Emirates – 11 February 2025 (9/10)

This hotel was a delight, with spacious rooms and a wonderful view of the water. The staff was incredibly accommodating, helping us call restaurants to make reservations and recommending different ways to get around the city. Its right by a ferry stop, but we really just walked everywhere we wanted to go. We loved our adorable room, with delicious coffee from a real coffee maker and cozy robes. Thank you for an amazing stay!
