Walking down Calle Zambelli in Santa Croce, you’d honestly never expect to find such a gem tucked away on this quiet residential street. The Mascareta, central apartment sits in what locals know is one of Venice’s most authentic neighborhoods — far enough from the tourist chaos but close enough that you’re never more than a pleasant stroll from the action. I mean, there’s something refreshing about staying in a three-star place that doesn’t try to be something it’s not, you know? It’s comfortable, well-maintained, and the kind of spot where you actually feel like you’re living in Venice rather than just visiting it.

Location Magic

Here’s the thing about Santa Croce that most guidebooks won’t tell you — it’s where Venetians actually live and work. The Mascareta sits right in the heart of this district, and honestly, that location score of 9.3 makes perfect sense once you’ve spent a day here. You can walk to the train station in about ten minutes (crucial when you’re dragging luggage), but you’re also just a bridge or two away from San Polo’s markets and restaurants. The nearby Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio is this lovely little square where locals gather in the evenings — it’s become one of my favorite spots to grab an aperitivo and watch real Venetian life unfold.

The Space Itself

What strikes you immediately about this apartment is how thoughtfully it’s been set up for actual living. The rooms are sized properly for Venice (which, let’s be honest, means they’re cozy but not cramped), and there’s enough storage space that you can actually unpack your suitcase. The kitchen area is particularly well-equipped — I’ve stayed in plenty of Venetian apartments where the “kitchenette” is basically decorative, but here you could genuinely prepare meals if you wanted to save some euros or just enjoy those incredible ingredients from the Rialto market. The Wi-Fi works reliably, which is more important than it sounds when you’re trying to navigate Venice’s maze of streets.

Perfect for Couples

I can see exactly why couples rate this place so highly — there’s something inherently romantic about having your own little Venetian pied-à-terre. You’re not dealing with hotel breakfast schedules or lobby crowds; instead, you can start your morning with coffee on the small balcony (if you’re lucky enough to snag that unit) or plan your day at your own pace. The neighborhood itself lends itself to those meandering evening walks that somehow always end up being the best part of any Venice trip. Plus, being slightly off the main tourist trail means you’ll discover those tiny bacari and family-run restaurants that make couples feel like they’ve found Venice’s secret side.

  Location of the apartment was perfect. Waterbus Line 1 is 5 min far by which you can reach to every place easily. Supermarket is just around the corner. You also have some good restaurants and bakery nearby. Check-in and check-out process was also very smooth and apartment owner was easily reachable.
  
  What could be improved: There were no kitchen towel and bath soap. Adding these things will be nice.

  Great location nice & quiet but very near (50m) a nice piazza and 10-25mins walk to most of the (many) attractions. Easy to contact host, property very clean & spacious – fully fitted kitchen (large fridge/freezer), oven, hob, loads of cupboard storage, bedroom has loads of storage too.
  
  What could be improved: Minor points only:
  Bathroom: 1 step up from main room which is fine. The sink & shower are another step up and it's slightly awkward to get into/out of the shower because you have to step over the base of the shower too – I don't know if I would have coped if I was unsteady on my feet.
  Room is up 3 flights of stairs – not a problem for us but again those with poor mobility should avoid.
  Garbage: No easy disposal, no bins nearby that we saw. Option 1: to try & meet with the Garbage boat (no fixed times & we didn't fancy waiting in for 3-4hrs). Option 2: pay 10 euros for cleaner to dispose of it (we chose this option as it was easiest). Later realised that if you're walking near the train station then there are loads of bins to dump it (but you'd need to walk 10-15mins with your rubbish to get there).

  -The apartment is located in a very good place from which is easy to reach each destination;
  -The apartment is well-equipped;
  -The landlord was helpful and answered quite fast on all our questions
  
  What could be improved: -There is a requirement to segregate the trash, so I think that the apartment could be better equipped with additional bins as there is only one bin, without the instruction on how to segregate. The instruction is sent on booking chat and is not clear.
  -Taking into consideration the price, in other apartments in Italy, we have the shower gel, it is for me rather standard so I didn't take the toiletry.

  I recently stayed at these apartments and found the experience quite satisfying. The location is undoubtedly one of its strongest points, with all major sights within walking distance. This made exploring the city a breeze!
  Convenience was also a highlight, with a grocery shop right under the house. This made meal preparation or quick snacks very easy, especially with the well-equipped kitchen that included all the necessary utensils. Appliances like a dishwasher and washing machine were in good condition and made the stay even more comfortable.
  The apartment was clean and well-maintained, with two air conditioners ensuring a pleasant temperature. Clean bedding was provided, which added to the overall comfort.
  
  What could be improved: However, the one downside was the uncomfortable mattress in the bed. While everything else met or exceeded expectations, a more comfortable mattress would have made the stay perfect.
  
  Overall, I recommend these apartments for their excellent location and amenities. If you can overlook the mattress issue, it offers a convenient and enjoyable stay in the heart of the city.
