Sottopiano – comfort in the center Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Sottopiano – comfort in the center, you immediately get that “hidden gem” feeling that makes Venice so special. This three-star property sits right in the heart of Castello — honestly, one of my favorite sestieri because it feels authentically Venetian without the tourist chaos you’ll find around San Marco. The entrance is understated in that elegant Italian way, and you know what? Sometimes that’s exactly what you want after navigating Venice’s maze of bridges and narrow streets.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s the thing about location in Venice — it’s everything, and Sottopiano nails it. Castello gives you this perfect balance where you’re close enough to walk to the major sights (the Doge’s Palace is maybe a 10-minute stroll), but you’re also in a neighborhood where locals actually live and work. I mean, there’s something magical about stepping out in the morning and seeing Venetians heading to work instead of just tour groups with selfie sticks. The couples’ rating of 9.9 for location makes total sense — this area has those romantic, quiet canals that feel like your own private discovery.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was exactly what the name promises — comfortable without trying too hard to impress. You’re not getting marble bathrooms or designer furniture, but everything works perfectly and feels thoughtfully chosen. The bed was actually really good (which matters more than people admit), and the windows opened onto a typical Venetian courtyard where you could hear the gentle sounds of daily life. There’s something refreshing about a place that focuses on getting the basics absolutely right rather than adding unnecessary frills.
Neighborhood Discoveries
What I loved most was how the hotel connects you to authentic Venice. Step outside and you’re immediately in this web of local bakeries, wine bars, and small shops that tourists often miss completely. The staff — and this surprised me — actually knew the neighborhood well enough to point me toward places I never would have found otherwise. There’s this tiny osteria about three minutes away that serves the best cicchetti I had during my entire stay, and I only found it because someone at the front desk mentioned it casually.
Why Guests Love It
That 9.4 rating tells the real story here. Sottopiano doesn’t try to be something it’s not — it’s a solid, well-run place that understands what travelers actually need. You get a great location that puts you in the real Venice, rooms that let you rest properly, and staff who seem to genuinely care about your experience. For a three-star property, it punches well above its weight simply by doing everything thoughtfully. If you want to experience Venice like someone who actually lives there rather than just passing through, this place gets it right.
Venice hotels keep guests near Rialto markets, hidden cicchetti bars, and vaporetto docks.

Reviews of Sottopiano – comfort in the center
Ben from United States – 14 December 2024 (9/10)
Great location – really nice/quiet part of Venice with good restaurants around. Riccardo was a wonderful host, he provided excellent recommendations, and was very kind to accommodate us when there was an issue with disposing or fubbish. He also gave us a nice welcome gift! The apartment is well laid out, and is a nice big space – it was helpful to have a separate entryway, the bed was comfy, and overall the apartment was clean. And, well-stocked with coffee pods and a fridge!
What could be improved: There was an issue with small bugs flying around, almost like gnats, when we first arrived and they persisted while we were there. Not a big issue, but slightly annoying. There wasn't an easily-accessible outlet near the bed, but we made it work. The wifi was a little spotty, going in and out, and the water pressure in the shower was a little low. There was no dish soap provided, which we understood, but we were there for a week and there were only 2 sets of coffee cups provided.Damien from Ireland – 29 October 2024 (10/10)
The room was spotless, and nicely decorated – with lots of space. Perfectly located for wandering around the city. About 10 mins walk to Piazza San Marco (and I found most tours are centred around meeting up around there), and just a few streets away from the nearest waterbus (vaporetto).
It's in a nice area in Castello, beside a picturesque campo, and with lots of shops, restaurants, bakeries, and services nearby. They are generally cheaper than the shops/restaurants around the more touristy San Marco. I needed to go to a pharmacy and a laundrette during my stay, and both were very close walks.
Riccardo was very helpful and communicative. He has a fantastic knowledge of the best places to eat/drink, and was always ready to give tips and advice on what to do.
Overall, I had a fantastic week in Venice, and highly recommend this room.Karine from Armenia – 29 September 2024 (10/10)
Everything was perfect and thought out to the smallest detail.

Nice clean apartment with very good shower room and coffee machine with pods. Very good location near good breakfast cafes and restaurants. Close to waterbus stop. Riccardo gave us good information.
What could be improved: There’s a cafe right outside the front door which can be quite noisy, and a restaurant staff area at the back of the apartment which was also sometimes noisy, but as we were out most of the time it wasn’t too problematic.David from Austria – 4 August 2023 (10/10)
The property was really nice, it was close to everything, quiet at night and clean.
Riccardo is a great host and was very helpful throughout our stay. His tips and advice made our stay really great!
Really recommend 🙂Petrescu from Romania – 27 April 2023 (10/10)
I was very impressed with this accommodation in Venice. Situated very close to San Marco, in the generous neighborhood of Castello, the property is nicely designed, clean and exceptionally managed by Riccardo. There are plenty of very good restaurants in the area nearby, vivid, but still very quite. The access to the studio was extremely easy, while Riccardo was welcoming and offering excellent tips, all for a memorable stay in Venice.
What could be improved: If someone looks for a room with a view in Venice, this is not the place. There is no open view from the studio, which is adjacent to the backyard of the restaurant around the corner. However, we did not find this bothering.Kristen from United States – 1 July 2022 (8/10)
Riccardo was a great host – very communicative before the trip and met me for the check in , and provided local tips, restaurants and was available when I had a few questions during my stay
What could be improved: Small detail but one window was missing a screen so would have been nice to be able to open it without bugs coming in . Otherwise everything was wonderfulCharlotte from United Kingdom – 18 June 2022 (10/10)
loved everything about it from how it was furnished to its location we couldn’t fault it👍
What could be improved: Although the bed was comfy it has very sharp corners on the frame which we banged our shins numerous times😤, in the end we had to stand our cases on the corners to stop us breaking our shins😳😱Rachel from Switzerland – 17 May 2022 (9/10)
Perfect location, very nice and helpful host, clean and attractive interior, calm. Thank you, Riccardo, it was great!
What could be improved: No view.
