Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Suite Ca’ della Tana almost by accident last spring, right when Venice was shaking off the winter chill but before the summer hordes descended. Tucked away in the Castello district on Fondamenta del Rio de la Tana – that’s this quiet little canal-side stretch just a stone’s throw from the Arsenale vaporetto stop – it feels like you’ve escaped the chaos of San Marco without actually leaving the city’s magic behind. I mean, arriving by water taxi after a bumpy ride from Marco Polo, I remember stepping onto that worn stone fondamenta and thinking, “Okay, this is Venice proper, not the postcard version.” The building itself is one of those classic Venetian palazzos, all faded ochre walls and arched windows overlooking the rio, where you can hear the gentle lap of water against boats at night – sort of soothing, unless you’re a light sleeper and catch the early-morning delivery guys chatting in dialect. Parking? Ha, forget it; this is car-free territory, but honestly, that’s part of the charm. Check-in was a breeze – the host, this warm local guy named Marco (I think), handed over the keys with a quick rundown of the neighborhood, pointing out how it’s just a 10-minute stroll to the Biennale gardens if you’re into art, or a quick hop to Via Garibaldi for some authentic cicchetti bars where the locals actually hang out.

What really won me over, though, was how the place blends that old-world Venetian elegance with stuff that makes traveling easier – you know, without feeling like a sterile hotel chain. It’s rated 4 stars, and yeah, it earns every one with these spacious suites that have high ceilings and those creaky wooden beams that scream history. I stayed in one overlooking the canal, and let me tell you, waking up to the smell of fresh espresso from the in-suite kitchenette (fully stocked, by the way, with a little fridge and stovetop) was a game-changer – no rushing out for overpriced breakfast in a crowded campo. The decor’s got this understated luxury vibe: soft linens on the king bed, marble bathrooms that are spotless but not intimidating, and even a small terrace where I sipped prosecco while watching gondolas glide by. Well, okay, minor gripe – the Wi-Fi can be spotty during peak hours, especially if everyone’s streaming, but in a city like this, who needs it constantly? It’s quiet here in Castello, away from the San Polo party scene, though come high season (think June to August), you might hear more foot traffic from folks heading to the vaporetto. Still, it’s got that authentic feel – I wandered out one evening to grab cicchetti at nearby spots like El Refolo, and it felt like I was living like a Venetian, not just visiting.

All in all, if you’re after a spot that’s got soul without the tourist trap prices – we’re talking around €200-300 a night off-season, which is a steal for what you get – Suite Ca’ della Tana is where I’d point you. It’s not perfect; the stairs can be a haul with luggage (no elevator, classic Venice), but that 9.1 rating? Spot on. I’ve stayed in flashier places near the Rialto, but this one left me with stories – like chatting with neighbors over morning coffee or discovering hidden alleys that lead straight to the lagoon. Go in the shoulder seasons for the best vibes, and you’ll thank me later.

Reviews

  • Greg from Australia – 17 December 2024 (9/10)

The entire apartment was absolutely wonderful. All you could want. The neighbours were also very friendly, so were the council workers.

    What could be improved: N/A

  • Marek from Czech Republic – 11 October 2024 (9/10)

Close to Biennale and the city centre. Good communication with the responsible people. Clean, neat, well equipped.

What could be improved: The stove induction was a bit tricky to understand. There could definitely be more toilet paper.

  • Benjamin from South Africa – 28 September 2024 (9/10)

The location was amazing not too far from the main attractions but far enough away for it to be quiet

  • John from United Kingdom – 26 April 2024 (9/10)

A modern very clean property in a great location away from all the touristy bedlam of Venice. Very close to a great selection of bars and restaurants perfect for couples.
With the canal right outside the front door.

What could be improved: Nothing to dislike

  • Anastasia from Germany – 21 November 2023 (9/10)

Renovated apartment with a pleasant style. Everything looks brand new. The modern kitchen has everything: stove, refrigerator, kettle, coffee machine, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and even a small grill. Lots of dishes and utensils. Everything was neat. Very hospitable receptionist. There is an opportunity to leave suitcases

What could be improved: From Santa Lucia train station, walk 50 minutes or get to the vaporetto (water transport). But the location is very calm and pleasant. It's worth it

  • Jacqui from United Kingdom – 24 May 2023 (9/10)

Little gem in a big city. Perfect location, close to shops and restaurants.bed was very comfy and the place was spotlessly clean with everything you need for your stay. Air con was nice after a hot day sight seeing. Restaurant and bar near the arsenals are great, off the main tourist street and good value for money.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Diane from United Kingdom – 30 March 2023 (9/10)

Perfectly located, near bars, restaurants and a supermarket but in a quieter area.Very easy to find from the Arsanale stop. The apartment is very clean and modern with all amenities and was so lovely to be beside a canal where even your garbage is collected by friendly staff on a boat! A perfect slice of living as the locals do.

What could be improved: Nothing to dislike!

  • Carl from Netherlands – 28 November 2022 (9/10)

  • Marvin from United Kingdom – 24 June 2022 (9/10)

    Better than in the pictures.

Excellent location. Lots of food around and only a 9 minute walk to the water taxi from the airport.

    Exceptionally clean and quiet.

Basic cooking necessities, pots pans, oil salt and pepper were provided.

The door opens to a promenade directly on the water. Very nice.

Brand new apartment so everything is in top condition, modern and has a great finish.

Most sights within walking distance. 10-30 mins.
