Appartamento al Ghetto Vecchio Overview

First Impressions

Walking through the narrow streets of Cannaregio to reach Appartamento al Ghetto Vecchio feels like you’re being let in on Venice’s best-kept secret. This three-star property sits right in the historic Jewish quarter, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. The building itself has that authentic Venetian charm — you know, the kind where you’re climbing worn stone steps and wondering how many centuries of travelers have done the same thing.

The Neighborhood Magic

Here’s what I love about staying in this part of Venice — you’re away from the tourist madness of San Marco, but still close enough to everything that matters. The Ghetto Vecchio area has this incredible mix of history and everyday Venetian life that you just don’t get near the main attractions. There’s something special about grabbing your morning coffee from a local bar where the barista actually remembers your order, rather than fighting crowds for overpriced espresso by the Rialto Bridge. Plus, couples absolutely rave about this spot — they’ve given the location a 9.9 rating, which honestly doesn’t surprise me at all.

The Space Itself

The apartment setup works really well if you want to feel less like a tourist and more like a temporary local. You’ve got your own space to spread out, which is actually pretty rare in Venice where most accommodations feel like they’re designed for hobbits. The kitchen comes in handy too — not that you’ll want to cook much with all the incredible restaurants around, but it’s nice having the option to grab some fresh produce from the Rialto market and prepare a simple meal. The room itself captures that Venetian atmosphere without being overly themed or touristy.

Getting Around

What really sold me on this place is how easy it is to explore from here. You’re a pleasant walk from the train station, which means no wrestling with luggage on water buses if you don’t want to. The vaporetto stops are close enough when you need them, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with constant crowds of day-trippers. I mean, you can actually walk to most of Venice’s highlights from here — it just takes a bit longer, which honestly gives you a better sense of how the city flows together.

Why Guests Love It

The 8.7 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve stayed here. It’s not trying to be something it’s not — just a well-located, comfortable base in one of Venice’s most atmospheric neighborhoods. The fact that it consistently gets that 9.9 location score tells you everything you need to know about the area. You’re close to some fantastic local restaurants (the kind that don’t have English menus), you can easily walk to the main sights when you want to, and at the end of the day, you get to retreat to a quieter corner of the city. For the price point of a three-star property, you’re getting access to what’s arguably Venice’s most interesting residential area.

Reviews of Appartamento al Ghetto Vecchio

  • Richard from Australia – 29 June 2024 (9/10)

Wonderful quiet location. Easy access to supermarkets, restaurants, waterbus transport, railway station.

What could be improved: Sadly the restaurant Al Faro, which we had eaten at with friends on a few occasions 11 years ago, was closed for renovations.

  • Natalie from United States – 25 June 2024 (9/10)

This little apartment is located on the first floor and the windows all face the canal. It is in the historic Jewish quarter, and across from a charming elementary school so you feel a part of real life and not just trapped in a tourist area but still close to everything. Giovanna was super accommodating around us arriving late due to a late flight, and a mixup we had when booking. The apartment was super clean, convenient, and very comfortable for our family.

  • Roman from United States – 18 June 2024 (9/10)

We really enjoyed this place! It is located in a quiet historic area called Ghetto Vecchio and it is just a 12 minute walk from the train station. There is a fish market nearby (5 minute walk) as well as a couple of supermarkets (Despar and Conad) and a number of restaurants. Vaporetto stations are also not far from the apartment. The apartment was clean and tidy. Our host was easy to reach and made sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. There are dining amenities and pots, pans and dishes should you chose to cook. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay and would choose this place again!

  • Adam from Poland – 8 April 2024 (9/10)

Ideal localisation. Very kind and helpful host.

  • Tereza from Czech Republic – 14 August 2023 (9/10)

The location was absolutely amazing – the northern part of inner Venice, walking distance everywhere. You can really feel the true atmosphere of Venice. There were gondolas riding in front of our windows.

What could be improved: It is difficult to dry wet bathing suits in the apartment (we went to Lido several times during our stay) – would it be possible to put some outside of the windows maybe?

  • Ioannis from Greece – 28 June 2023 (9/10)

Nice apartment, you feel like a local living in Venice. It is clean and has all the basics which you may need. It was a pleasant stay in a very interesting, historic neighborhood.

  • G from Australia – 29 May 2023 (8/10)

The location great. It was a short walk from the train station and close a lot of wonderful eateries close by.

What could be improved: The water pressure for the shower was weak.

  • Steve from United Kingdom – 17 May 2023 (9/10)

Great location. Only a 10 minute walk from the station. The apartment is just before the little bridge not just after it. Great communication with the host who was exceptionally accommodating with our arrival time. Large apartment with everything you need. Very clean and quiet. Recommend the Gondola ride just outside the apartment.

    What could be improved: 😊

    Very tidy.

  • Ashraful from Italy – 14 May 2022 (9/10)

The apartment is close to Venezia S.Lucia station. So we were able to walk from the the station to the apartment. You will get literally everything you need for a comfortable stay in the apartment. Also the host was really nice and told us everything we needed to do. Also gave us nice recommendations for visiting.

I am gonna definitely book again if I go to Venice again.
