Behind On The Canalside Venice Overview
First Impressions
Walking through the narrow streets of Santa Croce to find Behind On The Canalside Venice feels like you’re following a treasure map — and honestly, that’s part of the charm. This three-star gem sits right along one of Venice‘s quieter canals, away from the tourist stampede but still close enough to everything that matters. The moment you step inside, you realize this isn’t your typical Venetian hotel. It’s got character without trying too hard, you know what I mean?
The Perfect Venice Base
Here’s what I love about the location — couples absolutely rave about it, and after staying here, I get why they rate it nearly perfect for romantic getaways. You’re in Santa Croce, which means you can actually breathe without bumping into selfie sticks every five seconds. The Rialto Bridge is a pleasant walk away, and you can reach San Marco without the hassle of staying right in the thick of things. I mean, who wants to hear tour groups at 7 AM when you’re trying to enjoy your morning coffee? The neighborhood truly offers the best of both worlds for travelers seeking authentic Venetian experiences.
Canal Views and Cozy Spaces
The room I stayed in overlooked the canal — not the Grand Canal, mind you, but one of those picture-perfect smaller waterways where you’ll see locals going about their daily business. There’s something magical about watching gondoliers navigate these narrower channels with such ease. The space itself feels authentically Venetian without being cramped, which is honestly a minor miracle in this city. You’ll find thoughtful touches throughout that show someone actually cares about the guest experience. Every detail has been carefully considered for maximum comfort.
What Sets It Apart
The staff here knows Venice inside and out — they’re the type who’ll tell you which bacaro serves the best cicchetti or when to visit the fish market for the real local experience. Actually, that’s probably why this place scores so incredibly well with guests. It’s not just about having a bed for the night; it’s about feeling like you’ve discovered something special. The building itself has that weathered Venetian charm, but everything inside works perfectly, which isn’t always a given in historic properties. Their local knowledge transforms your stay into an authentic cultural immersion.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Venice can be overwhelming — the crowds, the prices, the constant navigation of bridges and dead-end streets. But staying here sort of puts you in this sweet spot where you’re part of the city’s rhythm without being consumed by it. Couples especially seem to fall for the romantic factor of having their own little canal-side retreat. With a 9.5 rating, guests clearly appreciate that balance of authentic location and genuine comfort. You’re not just visiting Venice; you’re actually living in it for a few days, and that makes all the difference. This apartment-style accommodation offers the perfect blend of hotel service and residential living.

Had a fantastic stay in Venice! The location was absolutely perfect. right next to the train station, making it super convenient for exploring the city. The room was comfortable, and Francesco, the owner, was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend!

The flat is right in the heart of Venice. It s a really nice place on the canal with a great view.
The owner is a little difficult. We had some problems with the heat but in the end he accepted to take measures.
I ve given a 10 for the great location, great city and for the nice apartament.
I hope the owner learnes to be more kinder with his customers.

The place is absolutely wonderful in terms of location, cleanliness, facilities, etc. The heaters there work automatically, so the apartment is always nice and cozy when you come back in from the freezing roads of Venice. The apartment is spacious with the bedroom being extremely big (even bigger than it seems in the pictures) and its location is amazing: only a 5 minute walk from the train station, nearby a few shops and restaurants (including a Burger King for anyone traveling with kids), and yet in an extremely quiet and safe location.
Somehow, the most amazing thing about this place is actually Francesco, the owner. Francesco is kind, polite, and extremely helpful. Throughout our stay he was available for questions and he gave us several tips regarding navigation across Venice, affordable places to eat, and transit to the airport (he literally had lists of relevant busses and trains available in the apartment for us). This might be one of the best places I ever stayed in on vacation, and I cannot recommend it enough.
Thank you, Francesco! We look forward to our next stay 🙂
What could be improved: I honestly liked everything about the place.Gloria from Ireland – 16 November 2024 (10/10)
Very clean and homely apartment with everything you could need – large rooms, great location (canal outside window), quiet (and yet close to everything). Francesco was so kind left us lots of little extras and kept our luggage after check out. If you want a real Venetian experience this is a lovely place to stay – would definitely stay here again if in Venice.

This apartment has much to commend it. It is a ground story apartment which backs onto a canal which in turn empties into the grand canal, less than 100 m away. The upshot is regular gondolas floating past the living room window, which has to be the quintessential Venice experience. Despite begin a literal 5 minute walk from the San Lucia train station, the apartment is accessed from a large but quiet square which opens onto the grand canal. The walk from the station involves battling with the hordes of other tourists, all the way until the last corner, when amazingly you turn into an secluded square from which you enter the apartment via a delightful garden. We were met at the apartment by our host who was particularly friendly and facilitated us dropping our bags before the apartment had been cleaned. The apartment has a large quiet bedroom, clean new bathroom, a smallish but functional living area, with a separate kitchen space. The decor was somewhat eclectic, but overall, a very pleasant place to stay, and one we'd be very happy to come back to.
What could be improved: Being right next to the canal, there was a typical mild canal type smell, noticeable on the approach to the apartment. In side the apartment was completely fine. Absolutely no concerns in this regard, though it meant we had an incentive to keep the window closed.
Although its not a complaint, it's worth realising that although this apartment is as close as you could want to the train station, it does involve crossing the Ponte Degli Scalzi, which. with heavy suitcases. is a challenge. So… you either need to be very fit to carry the bags up and over the steps, or very rich to afford the Vaporetto, which stops a few minutes away with no bridges intervening.Connie from United States – 8 November 2024 (10/10)
Location was convenient to the train station and right along a canal. The neighborhood was quiet. Major sites were within walking distance.

Very clean, great location to trains and buses to avoid heaps of walking with luggage. Francesco was so friendly and had many recommendations to have a great Venice experience.
