Ca’Barbarigo Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Ca’Barbarigo feels like stepping into someone’s elegant Venetian home — which, honestly, is exactly what this place used to be. This three-star palazzo sits right in the heart of San Marco, and I mean right in the thick of things. The entrance might be easy to miss if you’re not paying attention (typical Venice), but once you’re inside, the original 16th-century details immediately catch your eye. Exposed wooden beams, terrazzo floors, and those impossibly high ceilings that make you wonder how people heated these places centuries ago.
Location That Actually Matters
You know what’s great about this spot? You’re literally a three-minute walk from St. Mark’s Square, but you’re tucked away on a quieter canal where you won’t get trampled by cruise ship crowds at 7 AM. I’ve stayed in Venice enough times to know that location can make or break your trip here — and Ca’Barbarigo nailed it. The Rialto Bridge is maybe ten minutes on foot, and there’s a decent grocery store nearby if you want to grab some Italian snacks. Plus, the water taxi stop at San Marco Vallaresso is close enough that you won’t be dragging your luggage across half the city.
The Rooms
My room overlooked a small canal — not the Grand Canal, mind you, but honestly, I preferred it this way. Less noise, more authentic Venice vibes. The space itself was compact but thoughtfully arranged, with period furniture that actually looked comfortable rather than just decorative. The bathroom was modern enough (good water pressure, which isn’t always a given in these old buildings), and they’d managed to install decent air conditioning without ruining the historic character. Storage was a bit limited, but let’s be real — you’re in Venice to explore, not reorganize your suitcase.
Daily Rhythms
Breakfast happens in this lovely ground-floor space that opens onto a small courtyard. Nothing fancy — Italian pastries, good coffee, fresh fruit — but the setting makes it feel special. The staff here actually knows the neighborhood, which I appreciated. They pointed me toward a little bacaro for cicchetti that I never would have found on my own, and gave me the real story about which water bus routes to avoid during rush hour. There’s no restaurant on-site for dinner, but honestly, with all the incredible options within walking distance, you don’t need one.
Why Guests Love It
This place works because it strikes that perfect balance between authentic Venetian character and modern comfort. You’re staying in a real piece of history, but you’re not sacrificing hot showers or decent Wi-Fi for the experience. The couples who frequent this place seem to get it — it’s romantic without being over-the-top, central without being chaotic. Sure, it’s not going to wow you with fancy amenities or a rooftop bar, but it gives you exactly what you came to Venice for: that feeling of living like a local, even if it’s just for a few days.

The host was very kind and willing to help with any problem. The location is very ideal. The apartment corresponds to the photos presented. For those who like boss graphic environments this apartment is ideal.
What could be improved: The bed mattress could have been better.Joan from United Kingdom – 20 April 2024 (8/10)
Lovely spot. A privilege to stay in a palazzo and experience traditional architecture. Hearing the piano being played upstairs was super romantic.
What could be improved: Kitchen could be better equipped, and maybe some mosquito preventatives. Don’t open windows as we were eaten alive!Kerensa from United Kingdom – 9 April 2024 (7/10)
The location was fantastic, within 10 minutes walk of all the main tourist sites and really close to a vaporetto stop. The apartment was nice and quiet too, and the bed was comfy. The host was super helpful and sent us very detailed instructions to access the apartment and directions to the nearest supermarket.. I felt he would have sorted anything out really quickly if I'd had any problems.
What could be improved: The apartment could have been cleaner although it wasn't that bad. The kitchen nook was very poky and would really benefit from a microwave. The pillows were very flat, we could have done with 2 each. The phone signal was poor inside the apartment, WiFi would have really helped!David from United Kingdom – 4 November 2023 (9/10)
Stunning original property in fantastic central location. Window opens to quiet back with canal.

This place is incredible. It's in a centuries-old palazzo on a canal, in the heart of Venice (San Marco). The apartment is so full of character – stone walls and timber beams, a book-lined stairway, a smattering of art and antiques. There's also a little kitchenette and a decent bathroom. There was a TV (though I couldn't figure out how to use it!) and great air con.
The host was quick and helpful to communicate with, and gave excellent step-by-step instructions on how to get to the property. He also sent over some recommendations for places to eat.
I can't emphasise enough how magical it was to stay on a canal – super near to sights, main squares, cafes and the main thoroughfares (including vaporetto stop just a few minutes away), but also secluded enough that it wasn't crowded or noisy at all. It was so magical to open the window and take in the sights and sounds of the canal. Also, the palazzo that the apartment's in has a beautiful historic courtyard and well that were fascinating in themselves.
The place was quiet – I could hear neighbours at times during the day but had no real issues.
I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
What could be improved: A couple of minor points:
There was no bin in the bathroom – not ideal for people who menstruate! There was no shower gel either (though other toiletries, so maybe this was just an oversight).
The shutters blocked out light from the main window perfectly, but there's also a bathroom window with lighter curtains, which let light into the main room via a skylight – so it wasn't possible to sleep in total darkness.
Also, be mindful that you're sharing the palazzo with the Venetians who actually live there, and they might want privacy and for you to not photograph the shared courtyard. One neighbour acted hostilely towards me a couple of times when I was in the courtyard and it was only when she said 'no photos!' I realised why.Gillian from New Zealand – 3 July 2023 (7/10)
Handy to major attractions
What could be improved: Distance from train station, but had excellent directions on how to find the property from the proprietorAvalon from New Zealand – 29 June 2023 (8/10)
Amazing location, right in the centre of Venice and next to the canals. The location of the apartment was a higlight and we loved the aesthetic of the place.
What could be improved: The apartment was lacking basic amenities such as hand soap, enough toilet paper, kitchen utensils, dish soap and tea towels etc. These were only minor but did affect our overall experience and could be easily remedied for future guests. Otherwise we really enjoyed our stay and our host was helpful and always responsive.Kellie from Australia – 11 June 2023 (8/10)
Cute property, great location and fantastic host.
What could be improved: Could use new pillows.Tako from Georgia – 13 April 2023 (9/10)
Great location 🌏 near to main attractions, to be precise Piazza San Marco, easy to get to main train station with water bus line one, station Ferrovia. Station of this property with water bus line one is Maria dei Giglio from train station. Property was clean, comfortable and nice place to stay and spend holiday ❤️
