Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Ca’ Berto Apartment almost by accident last spring when I was dodging the usual tourist crush in Venice – I’d just hopped off the train at Santa Lucia station, and honestly, after lugging my bag over those little bridges, I was ready to collapse. It’s tucked right on Rio Terà Lista di Spagna, that lively strip in Cannaregio that’s basically the gateway from the station to the rest of the city. No need for a vaporetto if you’re traveling light; it’s like a five-minute walk, past all those quirky mask shops and gelato spots that pop up everywhere. The building itself is one of those classic Venetian affairs – narrow facade, a bit weathered but charming, with that faint salty canal smell wafting up from the nearby rio. I mean, it’s not some glossy hotel lobby; you buzz in and climb a flight of stairs (no elevator, fair warning if you’ve got heavy luggage), but once you’re inside, it feels like you’ve scored your own little pied-à-terre in the heart of it all.

What really won me over was how lived-in and practical it is – we’re talking a full apartment setup, not just a room. The place I stayed in had this cozy living area with worn leather sofas that begged for you to kick back with a glass of prosecco after a day of wandering, and a kitchenette stocked with basics like a coffee maker and fridge (perfect for grabbing fresh mozzarella from the market on Strada Nova, just around the corner). The bedroom was surprisingly spacious for Venice standards, with high ceilings and these heavy drapes that blocked out the morning light – though you might hear the occasional church bell from San Geremia nearby, which I actually found kind of soothing, like a gentle wake-up call. It’s in Cannaregio, so it’s quieter than the madness around San Marco, especially in the evenings when the day-trippers clear out; you can stroll to the Jewish Ghetto for some real-deal cicchetti at a fraction of the price, or hop on a boat to Rialto in under 10 minutes. Well, sort of – during high season in summer, the streets get packed, and acqua alta in fall can mean pulling on those rubber boots, but that’s Venice for you. The Wi-Fi was solid, too, which mattered when I needed to plan my next ferry ride, and the hosts were these friendly locals who left tips on avoiding the tourist traps – like hitting the bacari bars early to beat the crowds.

All in all, if you’re not after five-star fluff but want something authentic that lets you pretend you’re a Venetian for a week, Ca’ Berto is a gem. It’s rated an 8.7 for good reason – comfortable, well-located without being overwhelming, and at four stars, it punches above its weight for the price, especially for couples or small families who need space to spread out. I left feeling like I’d actually experienced the city, not just skimmed the surface, and yeah, I’d book it again in a heartbeat – maybe next time in the off-season when the fog rolls in and everything feels a bit more magical. (Just pack light; those stairs are no joke after a few spritzes.)

Very close to train station. Very easy to find and host was extremely detailed and responsive making the check-in process was very easy. Bed was comfortable. The shower was very nice. Be prepared for lots of stairs if that's something thats difficult for you, but I did not mind. Despite being on a busy street it was very quiet. Washer had built in dryer which was very nice.

What could be improved: No complaints

  • Myles from United Kingdom – 26 November 2024 (9/10)

It was very quiet in such a good location.

  • Jodi from Australia – 4 October 2024 (9/10)

This apartment is just a short walk from the train station, and it’s both spacious and clean. The hosts were incredibly helpful, going above and beyond to assist with all our inquiries.

What could be improved: The apartment building does not have a lift, so be prepared to carry your luggage up 3 levels of stairs.

  • Clive from United States – 30 June 2024 (8/10)

    Nice clean quiet apartment
    Great location
Only drawback had to carry luggage up 6 flights of stairs

What could be improved: No elevator

  • Nils from Germany – 20 February 2024 (9/10)

Ca'Berto offers a very attractive deal. Very centrally located yet utterly quiet, basic yet comfortable, it leaves nothing to be desired. A supermarket is just a few steps away, as are the railway station, the bus terminal and the vaporetto water bus stops. The apartment furnishes everything you need, the couch can be turned into another bed and you can cook or bake in case you want to stay in. I was a bit apprehensive about the heating in February but I needn't have worried. Best of all, the hosts had a whatsapp group for us which made the self check-in easy and all our questions were efficiently and kindly answered. Great experience !

What could be improved: Can't think of anything. I don't want to think too much about us having in fact contributed to the housing shortage in Venice…which has made us, the tourists, the problem….

  • Chelsea from United States – 29 October 2023 (9/10)

    – Close to train station and water bus stop
    – Close to groceries/convenience stores
    – Didnt have to meet up with someone to check in or get keys
    – Easy and fast communication with the hosts. They have good check in instructions and are generally very helpful
    – Two ACs in the apartment
    – The washing machine is great! I was afraid that the clothes might take a long time to dry because they don't have a dedicated dryer. But the washing machine has a built-in dryer already. It does take time for the whole process to finish but I think that's a european washer thing.
    – Modern and spacious inside
    – Their hair dryer is pretty powerful. I appreciate this because usually hosts have cheap and weak hair dryers.
    – They have venetian blinds that shuts out light and noise. The only problem is sometimes there's a random beeping sound that starts early in the morning. Maybe it comes from the businesses downstairs? Can't say where it's from but this isn't the property's fault. It's just part of being able to stay in a convenient area.
    – Top floor so no banging or noise from neighbors
    – Great value for the price
    – Didn't run out of hot water
    – lots of plug sockets

    Other
    – We didn't use any of the kitchen besides some utensils so cant say much about it
    – We did not know trash disposal was every day but host was was kind and understandable that we were not aware of the rules

What could be improved: – Apartment is on the top floor with six flights of stairs

  • Shanegregory from Australia – 12 October 2023 (9/10)

The apartment was clean and modern with good facilities. The location was really good for us, a short walk from the railway station and easy access to the Vaporetto station. Plenty of eating options around and some good recommendations from the host.

What could be improved: The hosts were very much at arms length – we didn't se them at all. Nobody met us to show us the features of the apartment or how appliances worked (would have been useful as the controls are obviously in Italian). Once we arrived at the apartment building we had to message the hosts who then sent photos, with instructions on how to get inside.

  • Sharon from New Zealand – 19 August 2023 (9/10)

Location was excellent, only a few minutes from the train station and water taxis. It was a busy street with lots of shops but the apartment was extremely quiet. It had everything we needed for a great stay in Venice and we would highly recommend this property. Access to the apartment was smooth and efficient.

What could be improved: Apartment was on the 4th floor so if you don't like steps this would not be for you.

  • Jeremy from New Zealand – 17 August 2023 (9/10)

Modern, clean, good location with spacious areas

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Mark from United States – 31 July 2023 (9/10)

It was very close to both the train station and all of the sights. It was also exceptionally clean. The washing machine was much appreciated.

What could be improved: It was on the fourth floor. 😄
