Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Ca Malia almost by accident last spring, wandering through the winding alleys of Cannaregio after hopping off the vaporetto at Ca’ d’Oro – honestly, it’s one of those spots where Venice feels less like a postcard and more like a living neighborhood, with locals chatting over espresso and the faint smell of fresh bread drifting from hidden bakeries. The hotel’s tucked away on Rio Terà Farsetti, this quiet little street that’s basically a reclaimed canal (they filled it in ages ago, which is why it’s called a “terà” – fun fact if you’re into that sort of thing). From the outside, it’s unassuming – a classic Venetian facade with those tall, shuttered windows and a heavy wooden door that creaks just enough to make you feel like you’re stepping into history. Check-in was a breeze; the staff – mostly Venetians themselves – greeted me with that warm, no-fuss hospitality, sorting out my bags and even recommending a nearby osteria for cicchetti that wasn’t swamped with tourists. I mean, in a city where everything’s on foot or by boat, it’s a relief to find a place that’s just a short stroll from the Strada Nova, where you can grab groceries or hit up the market without the San Marco crowds breathing down your neck.
What really won me over, though, was how the place balances old-world charm with the stuff you actually need after a day of pounding the pavements. My room overlooked a narrow rio – well, sort of, through these gauzy curtains that filtered the morning light just right – and it had that authentic Venetian vibe with exposed beams and terracotta floors that were cool underfoot, even in the humid May heat. The bed was massive and comfy, no skimping there, and the bathroom? Spotless, with one of those rain showers that makes you linger a bit too long. Breakfast is served in this cozy courtyard – think fresh cornetti, local cheeses, and coffee that’s strong enough to wake the dead – and it’s included, which is a godsend in pricey Venice. Oh, and if you’re traveling light, they have a small elevator, but it’s one of those tiny European ones, so pack accordingly or be prepared for a workout on the stairs. Noise-wise, it’s blissfully quiet at night; Cannaregio winds down early, unlike the party vibes over in Dorsoduro, though you might hear the occasional gondolier singing faintly in the distance – romantic, sure, but earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. I spent an afternoon just lounging in the common area, flipping through old books on Venetian history they keep on the shelves, and it felt like a proper escape from the tourist grind.
All in all, if you’re after that elusive “real Venice” without sacrificing comfort, Ca Malia is a gem – it’s got a stellar 9.5 rating for a reason, and as a 4-star spot, it punches above its weight. Sure, it’s not right on the Grand Canal (which means no crazy boat traffic waking you at dawn), but that’s part of the appeal; you’re immersed in the everyday magic of the city, close enough to pop over to the Ghetto for a history fix or catch the train at Santa Lucia if you’re day-tripping to Padua. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season when the alleys are emptier and the fog rolls in – just watch out for high water in autumn, as the staff will warn you with those handy boot rentals. Trust me, it’s the kind of place that makes you rethink those flashy chain hotels; here, it’s all about savoring the subtle rhythms of Venice, one canal at a time.

Good sized flat in a quiet street, yet close to the centre. Flat was clean and well equipped. The hosts were also very nice when my flight had significant delays and I arrived after the agreed time.

The flat was clean and comfortable. I freeze easily and was very happy with the central heating and extra blankets. The kitchen and washing machine were greatly appreciated. Even though the flat was centrally located, it was quiet at night, and I slept very well. I liked the extra comfort of a sofa with reading lamps.
What could be improved: The toaster didn’t work.Josie from United Kingdom – 12 September 2024 (10/10)
The location of the apartment is amazing, away from the very busy tourist area near lots of lovely bars and restaurants. Rudi welcomed us at the vaporetto stop and carried our bags, then showed us the apartment and the local area. The apartment is very clean, comfy and the perfect size for a couple.
The apartment is just over a bridge from the Fondamenta dei Ormesini which has bars, cafes and restaurants (and gelato!). It is also very near the vaporetto stop for the airport and Murano, and only a 15 minute walk to the station.Elham from Canada – 23 June 2024 (10/10)
It is a good location to access many restaurants and cafes. The place felt safe & it was clean. The property manager's staff were kind and responsive.

We were met at the ferry stop from the Airport by Rudi and walked to the apartment.
Even though we arrived quite late; nearly 10pm.
He was very friendly & very helpful and made our arrival very easy & straightforwardSarah from United Kingdom – 15 May 2024 (8/10)
Great location away from the crowds but walking distance from everything. Lovely cafes and bars close by.
What could be improved: It was a bit dark but to be honest we were hardly in the apartment. It was fine for us.Steven from United Kingdom – 7 October 2023 (10/10)
Review of Ca Malia
Just back from Ca Malia in Canarregio, Venice. We had a fantastic holiday. This flat is in a perfect location, quiet at night and close to the main streets for restaurants and shopping. It is also within walking distance of 3/4 Vaporetto stops and Santa Lucia Railway Terminal and Water Taxi dock. It is also close to the Traghetto station at St Sofia so you can traverse the Canal Grande quickly for €2 per person. The flat is spacious, very clean and tidy and has air conditioning. The bed is big and firm and the shower is excellent. The flat is very comfortable and secure. A small safe is provided for use. Rudi arranged for Ignazio to meet and greet us at Guglie and he helped us with our luggage. Rudi came by to introduce himself and welcome us to the flat. He was very friendly and answered all questions. I must say the welcoming and communications with Rudi and Ignazio were excellent. I highly recommend this rental in Canarregio.Loris from United States – 11 September 2023 (10/10)
Cold A/C even when it was 100 (38) degrees outside. Great location near the San Marcuola vaporetto stop — it’s one of the only stops that the #2 vaporetto stops at so you zip down the Grand Canal quicker and it’s less packed. Also, it’s just south of the amazing restaurant and bar area Misericorderia. Fortunately the windows are so noise resistant that you don’t hear anything once they’re closed. Great grocery store in the old Teatro Italia around the corner, plus a great vegetable and fruit stand about 20 steps from the apt. Huge living area and desk. Very bright inside. Huge bathroom with a two person shower. Good washing machine. Fully stocked kitchen. I travel to Venice quite a bit and this is by far one of the best places I’ve stayed in. It’ll be my go-to apartment unless I need to stay closer to San Marco. It felt like a someone’s home — no Ikea here. Oh and the woman who met me for the keys was an absolute gem!!
What could be improved: Nothing wrong with this place at all.Barcellona from Australia – 8 September 2023 (8/10)
The property was in a very good location close to supermarket, restaurants and shops. The place was clean and had good facilities.
What could be improved: The bedroom’s lighting was a bit poor.Ruta from Lithuania – 17 June 2023 (10/10)
The host will meet you and give you essential information on everything: how to navigate the city, where to eat, and similar. Very friendly and helpful. The location is perfect. If you open the windows – you feel the city; if you close the windows – rooms are perfectly silent. The apartment is sparkling clean, the kitchen is well-equipped, and the shower is hot and strong. Bed and mattress – very comfortable. Art and traditional art details are really inspiring. Highly recommended for families and small groups.
What could be improved: All was fine!
