Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Casa Caburlotto after a sweaty trek from the Santa Lucia train station – you know, that bustling hub where everyone drags their suitcases over the Ponte degli Scalzi. It’s tucked away in the Santa Croce sestiere, right on Fondamenta Rizzi, which is one of those quieter canalside streets that feels like a secret escape from the San Marco crowds. Honestly, Venice can be overwhelming with all the tour groups and gondola hawkers, but this spot? It’s like a breath of fresh air – or rather, a whiff of that briny lagoon air mixed with the faint scent of blooming jasmine from their little garden courtyard. I arrived in late spring, when the city starts heating up, and the place was a godsend: no blaring horns or throngs outside, just the occasional church bell from nearby San Simeone Profeta chiming softly. Check-in was straightforward – the staff (mostly friendly locals with a no-nonsense vibe) handed over a heavy old key, and well, there I was, in a simple room that overlooked a patch of green instead of another tourist trap.
What really won me over was how unpretentious it all felt – this is a 3-star guesthouse run by a religious order, so don’t expect luxury frills like a spa or room service, but that’s part of its charm, I mean, it’s authentic Venice without the markup. My room was basic but spotless: crisp white linens on a firm bed, wooden shutters that actually blocked out the morning light (a lifesaver after those long days wandering to Rialto), and a tiny bathroom with hot water that never failed, even during peak season rushes. Breakfast downstairs was nothing fancy – think fresh croissants, yogurt, and strong espresso served in a communal dining area that buzzes quietly with fellow travelers swapping stories. Oh, and that garden? It’s a hidden gem for reading or just zoning out; I spent an afternoon there listening to birds instead of vaporettos chugging by. Parking’s a non-issue since, let’s face it, cars in Venice are a nightmare – better to hop off at Piazzale Roma, a 10-minute walk away, or take the No. 1 vaporetto to San Stae stop. One minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the evenings when everyone’s online, but hey, it forces you to unplug and explore. Noise-wise, it’s blissfully quiet after 10 PM, though you might hear faint echoes from the Grand Canal if the wind’s right.
If you’re the type who wants to experience Venice like a local – dodging the day-trippers and settling into a rhythm – Casa Caburlotto is your spot. It’s not for party animals or those craving five-star pampering, but for budget-savvy folks (rates are reasonable, especially off-season in fall when the fog rolls in and the city’s magical), it’s a solid 8.6 in my book. I left feeling refreshed, with tips from the staff on underrated spots like the Jewish Ghetto in Cannaregio, just a short stroll north. Next time I’m in Venice, I’d book here again in a heartbeat – pack light, bring comfy shoes for those cobblestones, and prepare to fall for the understated side of La Serenissima.

The staff working at the front desk and serving breakfast were incredibly kind and helpful. They helped me pick restaurants, which is great with how many bad tourist trap restaurants there are. The facilities were comfortable and clean.
What could be improved: The walls are thin, but they have quiet hours so it wasn’t an issue. The property is completely closed at midnight, so not ideal for anyone hoping to stay out really late partying. But that makes it a nice quiet place for those who aren’t!Daniela from Italy – 24 February 2025 (9/10)
quiet, good location, very kind

An excellent location a few minutes walk from Piazzale Roma. Lovely calm environment – smallish single room but it was fine. Shared bathroom but I knew that in advance and it wasn't a problem (they do have rooms with private bathrooms). Breakfast was very nice.

The place is clean, quiet (walls are thin but it seems the guests are all behaving very well) and in a good area (not too touristy but close to everything)
What could be improved: It would be good if there was a kitchen area with water/tea to be used. There is a coin machine for teaRustem from France – 1 December 2024 (9/10)
A beautiful hotel that served as a monastery before and which still have nuns living and serving guests. Amazing vibe, beautiful garden, good breakfast, and kind staff
