Hotel Description
You know, when I first stumbled upon Casa Del Melograno tucked away in Venice’s Cannaregio district – right on that quiet stretch of Cannaregio 2023, just a stone’s throw from the Strada Nova – I honestly thought I’d hit the jackpot for a real, no-frills Venetian stay. I mean, Venice can be such a whirlwind of tourists swarming San Marco, but Cannaregio? It’s got that lived-in vibe, with locals chatting in the campo and the occasional whiff of fresh bread from the bakery around the corner on Fondamenta della Misericordia. I arrived by vaporetto from Santa Lucia station – super easy, actually, about a 10-minute walk if you’re not lugging massive suitcases (and trust me, those cobblestones will test you). Check-in was a breeze; the staff – this friendly older guy who sort of doubled as concierge and storyteller – handed over the keys with a quick rundown of the best nearby cicchetti bars, like that hidden spot in the Jewish Ghetto where you can grab spritz for half the price of the tourist traps. The building itself is one of those classic Venetian palazzos, a bit worn around the edges with its faded pink facade and wrought-iron balconies overlooking a narrow rio – you can hear the gentle lap of water against the walls at night, which is oddly soothing after a day of dodging crowds.
What really sets this place apart, though – and I say this as someone who’s bounced around a few 3-star spots in Italy – is how it feels like a cozy hideaway without trying too hard. The rooms are on the smaller side, sure, typical for Venice where space is at a premium (I had to maneuver my bag around the bed like a puzzle), but they’re spotless and charming, with these pomegranate motifs everywhere – melograno means pomegranate, after all, and they’ve leaned into it with fresh fruit in the breakfast spread and even some themed decor that doesn’t feel gimmicky. Breakfast, by the way, is a highlight: served in this sunny courtyard that’s bursting with potted plants come spring, with decent coffee (not the burnt stuff you get in some places) and pastries that actually taste homemade. I remember sitting there one morning, listening to church bells from the nearby Madonna dell’Orto – Tintoretto’s church, if you’re into art history – and thinking, this is the Venice you don’t see on postcards. It’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, and there’s no elevator, so pack light if you’re on an upper floor. But honestly, for an 8.8 rating, it’s punching above its weight – quiet at night except for the occasional boat horn, and way more affordable than those flashy spots near the Rialto during high season in summer, when the whole city feels like a sauna.
Look, if you’re the type who wants an authentic slice of Venice without the over-the-top luxury (or the price tag), Casa Del Melograno is where it’s at. It’s perfect for wandering types – pop out the door and you’re steps from the Ghetto’s synagogues or a quick boat ride to Murano for glass-blowing demos. I left feeling like I’d actually lived there a bit, you know? Not just passed through. Well worth it, especially in the shoulder seasons like fall, when the fog rolls in and everything gets that magical, misty glow. Just don’t tell too many people – I want to keep this gem to myself next time.

Staff was very helpful checking us in. Very clean apartment, comfy and value for money. The bathroom was beyond expectations. Location was also alright, you definitely need a bit of walking to reach the most tourist attractions, but very enjoyable area to walkaround. We personally prefer this location instead of a super touristy one.
What could be improved: Poor soundproof, which I suppose is a common problem in Venice in general. Especially the resident from above floor was significantly loud even in late hoursNathan from United Kingdom – 14 March 2025 (9/10)

We had two of the apartments, each with 1 bedroom, kitchenette, and a "living" room with a small dining table , chairs, a couch. Spacious and sweet, though not at the main location, just around the corner. Sadly no breakfast was served, but there are nice places very close by. Great location close to a vaporetto stop in Cannaregio. This was our 4 th time staying here, each time a different room.
What could be improved: The apartments could use more lighting…a little dark. Staff is a little scarce, but are nice.Ted from Portugal – 23 October 2024 (8/10)
Very nice staff. Very quiet room
What could be improved: A bit small
