Hotel Description
I remember stepping off the vaporetto at Ca’ d’Oro – you know, that stunning Gothic palace right on the Grand Canal – and weaving my way through the narrow calles of Cannaregio to find Casa in Venezia 2019. It’s tucked away on a quiet side street off Strada Nova, which is basically the main drag in this neighborhood, but honestly, it feels worlds away from the tourist crush around San Marco. I arrived in the late afternoon during shoulder season – early October, when the summer crowds have thinned but the air still has that crisp, salty tang from the lagoon. Check-in was a breeze; the staff spoke perfect English with that warm Italian flair, and they even offered a quick map sketch of hidden spots like the old Jewish Ghetto just a five-minute stroll away. No elevators, mind you – it’s an old building, so hauling luggage up those creaky wooden stairs was a bit of a workout, but hey, that’s Venice for you. The lobby’s small and unpretentious, with exposed brick walls that smell faintly of aged stone and fresh espresso from the breakfast setup nearby.
What really won me over, though, was how the place balances that classic Venetian charm with modern comforts without trying too hard. My room overlooked a tiny canal – not the Grand one, but a sleepy side branch where you could hear the gentle lap of water against mossy walls at night, and occasionally a gondolier’s distant hum. The bed was plush, with those crisp white linens that feel like a hug after a day of pounding pavements, and the bathroom had one of those rain showers that actually works – no dribbles here. Breakfast is served in a cozy courtyard (weather permitting), and it’s nothing fancy but solid: fresh croissants, prosciutto, and cappuccinos that hit the spot. I mean, it’s not a five-star spread, but for a 4-star spot with an 8.6 rating, it punches above its weight. One minor gripe? The Wi-Fi can be spotty in the evenings when everyone’s streaming – sort of a Venice thing with all the thick walls – but during the day, it’s fine for planning your next adventure. And speaking of location, you’re steps from the Santa Lucia train station if you’re day-tripping to Verona, yet far enough that the neighborhood quiets down after dark; no rowdy bar noise, just the occasional church bell.
All in all, if you’re looking for an authentic slice of Venice without the overpriced hype – well, this is it. I’ve stayed in flashier spots near the Rialto, but they felt disconnected, you know? Here, you can wander out for cicchetti at a local bacaro on Fondamenta della Misericordia, grab gelato from that hole-in-the-wall place on Campo dei Mori, or just people-watch from your window. It’s perfect for couples or solo travelers who want to feel like they’re living in the city, not just visiting. Prices spike in high season (think July-August), so book early, but off-peak? It’s a steal. Honestly, I’d go back in a heartbeat – that mix of history, comfort, and real neighborhood vibes makes it special.
