Grand Canal Suite by Wonderful Italy Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Grand Canal Suite by Wonderful Italy, you’re immediately struck by how perfectly it sits in the Santa Croce district — honestly, the location alone makes this three-star property punch above its weight. The building has that classic Venetian charm without being overly touristy, and you can tell right away that couples have discovered something special here (they consistently rate the location a solid 9.0). It’s one of those places where you feel like you’ve stumbled onto a local secret, even though you’re still very much in the heart of Venice.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about staying in Santa Croce — you’re close enough to everything that matters, but far enough from the Piazza San Marco crowds to actually breathe. The Grand Canal Suite sits in what’s genuinely considered the top-rated area in Venice, and after spending time here, I get why. You can walk to the Rialto Bridge without fighting through tourist bottlenecks, and there are actual neighborhood cafes where locals grab their morning espresso. The vaporetto stops are right there when you need them, but you know what? Half the time you’ll find yourself just wandering the quieter canals because this part of Venice still feels authentic.
The Accommodation
The suite itself strikes that sweet spot between comfort and character that’s honestly hard to find in Venice at this price point. You’re not getting five-star amenities here, but the space feels genuinely Venetian — think original details mixed with modern necessities that actually work. The rooms are well-appointed without being fussy, and there’s something refreshing about staying somewhere that doesn’t try to be more than it is. I mean, when you’re in Venice, you’re spending most of your time exploring anyway, so having a comfortable, well-located base is really what matters.
The Venice Experience
What sets this place apart is how it lets you experience Venice like you’re not entirely a tourist. From here, you can slip into those tiny bacari (wine bars) that locals frequent, or take evening walks along canals where you might be the only person with a camera. The Santa Croce area has this wonderful mix of residential Venice and visitor-friendly amenities — you’ll find yourself grocery shopping alongside Venetians at the local markets, then heading out to explore the Doge’s Palace. It’s that balance that makes your stay feel more authentic than just checking boxes on a sightseeing list.
Why Guests Love It
The 7.3 rating tells you this isn’t perfect, but the 9.0 location score from couples tells the real story — this is about being in exactly the right spot in Venice. You’re paying three-star prices for what feels like a much more premium location, and that trade-off works beautifully for travelers who prioritize experience over amenities. Grand Canal Suite by Wonderful Italy succeeds because it understands what Venice is really about: the magic happens outside your hotel room, and the best thing your accommodation can do is put you in the perfect position to find it.

Reviews of Grand Canal Suite by Wonderful Italy
Chris from United Kingdom – 20 March 2025 (8/10)
Great location, very spacious, felt safe for whole time spent there
What could be improved: Took a while to heat the bedroom area.Adele from Australia – 29 October 2024 (7/10)
The location is fantastic
What could be improved: The bathroom had an unpleasant smell and the bed has a plastic cover which is very uncomfortable.Helen from Ireland – 7 October 2024 (6/10)
Great location. Great directions given. Big rooms and spacious.
What could be improved: No kettle to make a hot drink. I didn’t pick this absence up in the listed facilities before I went as I have seen a kitchenette without a kettle. No signal on the TV. Room was cold. We experienced a thunderstorm in Venice and we got wet several times but had to come back to a cold apartment. There was only one light duvet spread. I asked for blankets as my mam has bad arthritis and suffers a lot of pain when it’s cold and they would not give me a blanket. I have never experienced such bad customer service and how anyone could be so rude not to give a blanket to a sick woman. I have never experienced such cold in the apartment. The door between the bedroom and kitchen was tight and struggled to close it to keep the place warm. I buried myself under the cover to try heat up. My mam was in excruciating pain in her legs and is still not right since we came home. As I was told the heating don’t go on under the end of October however in circumstances where the weather has changed this should be put on especially after saying we were cold. All I got was an email back to ask what time are we checking out. So rude. I felt they got their money and never cared after that.Stephanee from Australia – 6 September 2024 (8/10)
Close to main station, secure and view of the main canal/ station. Close to good restaurants and bars.
What could be improved: Same towels for four days, otherwise had to pay 12 euro each day, and after a big storm the room smelt bad- we think from the aircon or drains.Stephanie from Australia – 8 June 2024 (7/10)
The location was perfect! Short walk from the station so that you don’t need to carry your luggage throughout the winding streets of Venice. The common room was also lovely.
What could be improved: The air conditioning was actually freezing we couldn’t turn it off. It was great during the day because it was hot outside but very cold overnight trying to sleep.Steven from United States – 23 May 2024 (6/10)
The location and cleanliness of the room and lobby,
What could be improved: The means to acquire the room code. We had to call a remote location a couple times. Our phone carrier's international plans didn't work overseas and so this proved very difficult. It would have been much more convienent to be able to get the room code through email accessible on a free wifi connection and even better if the host provided a passcode Well in advance of any arrival.
Additionally we were not satisfied about someone knocking on our door asking to see our bathroom. The man was claiming to need to check out if our bathroom was leaking. It made us uncomfortable to have a stranger claiming to be someone representing the host company (truthfully or not) asking to see our bathroom. I had to call the host company to ensure the man was indeed there on their behalf. The encounter and the safety measures we had to take to protect our belongings (carrying our valuables with us rather than entrust them to the safety of the room and the stranger looking at the bathroom) caused us to be late for our scheduled tour to a neighboring island. The safe was also not bolted down to anything so we didn't feel safe locking our belongings and passports in them.Nicola from United Kingdom – 17 May 2024 (8/10)
Fantastic location overlooking Grand Canal. 4 minute walk from station . Easy access to valporettos .Excellent wifi. Small fridge useful to keep water cool.
What could be improved: We were unable to use the A/C for first 2 days as Italian law dictates when it can be used for tourists apparently, so the first 2 nights were uncomfortable as very hot. A/C suddenly came on on 3rd day.
No kettle, nor mugs or glasses so unable to have any drinks in the apartment.Power from Ireland – 6 May 2024 (8/10)
Excellent location within 5 mins walk of bus station from airport. Close to train station also. Lovely location by grand canal within 30 mins or so walk to rialto bridge. Check in done online in advance & staff very helpful. Provided with photographic directions by staff which made finding property very easy. Needed assistance during stay & staff were helpful & attentive & responded quickly to text.
June from United Kingdom – 15 April 2024 (7/10)
Good position on the grand canal opposite the station and near the bus station which was what we wanted
What could be improved: We did not like 5 lots of stairs to get to the room and no lift. We did not like having a rubber incontinence sheet (which was not attached to the mattress) under the bottom sheet. The sheet ruckled up as you slept and was very uncomfortable. Cotton or polyester ones that can be washed should be used. We didn’t like not having any sort of glass/plastic cup with the water.Azha from Malaysia – 1 November 2023 (8/10)
The location was really easy to find and close to train and waterboat stations. The room was comfy and clean.
