Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon HAMMAM Venice almost by accident during one of those endless wanders through San Marco’s tangled calles – you know, the kind where you think you’re heading straight for Piazza San Marco but end up looping back on yourself twice. It’s tucked away on Sestiere San Marco 3102, just a stone’s throw from Teatro La Fenice, which is handy if you’re into opera or just want to catch a show without the hassle of a long trek. I arrived via vaporetto from Santa Lucia station, hopping off at San Marco Vallaresso and weaving through the crowds – honestly, if you’re visiting in high season like July, brace yourself for the tourist crush; it’s like navigating a human river. But once you duck into that quiet side street, the hotel feels like a hidden gem, all old Venetian stone facade with these subtle Moorish vibes that nod to its name – yeah, “Hammam” as in those steamy Turkish baths, which they actually have on-site. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were these warm locals who chatted about the best time to hit the Rialto Market (early morning, before the stalls get picked over), and they even helped with my bags up the narrow stairs – no elevators here, mind you, which is par for the course in historic Venice buildings.

Stepping into my room, it was one of those spaces that immediately makes you exhale – sort of compact, like most spots in the city (I mean, space is at a premium with all these canals), but done up with these plush textiles and dark wood accents that give off a cozy, almost exotic retreat feel. The bed was ridiculously comfortable, with linens that smelled faintly of lavender, and the bathroom had this massive rain shower that was a godsend after a day of pounding the pavements. Oh, and that hammam spa? It’s the real standout – I treated myself to a session, and let me tell you, soaking in the steam room with those herbal scents wafting around, it was like melting away the jet lag while church bells tolled faintly outside. Breakfast was served in this intimate courtyard – fresh pastries, prosciutto, and cappuccinos that hit just right – though it can get a bit noisy if the place is full, with echoes from the alleyways sneaking in. Well, nothing’s perfect; the Wi-Fi dipped a couple times in the evenings, probably from all the thick walls, but hey, you’re in Venice – who needs constant scrolling?

All in all, with its solid 8.6 rating and four-star setup, HAMMAM Venice is the kind of place that sticks with you, especially if you’re after something more soulful than the big chain hotels lining the Grand Canal. It’s not the cheapest – rooms can nudge up during Carnevale – but for the location, right in the heart of San Marco yet away from the worst of the bustle, it’s worth it. I’d go back in a heartbeat, maybe in shoulder season like April when the crowds thin out and you can actually hear the water lapping against the foundations at night. If you’re plotting a trip, book it – you’ll thank me when you’re unwinding in that hammam after dodging pigeons in the piazza.

  • Marjorie from United States – 27 June 2023 (9/10)

We were able to have an early checkin. The apartment was very spacious and clean. Location was close to everything.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • Sandra from United Kingdom – 26 October 2024 (9/10)

Very comfortable, spacious and quiet. Fitted out to a high quality with everything we needed. Steam room was amazing after a long day exploring. Location is fab, peaceful with great little shops and restaurants near.
The hosts gave us great instruction to travel from the airport but we made the mistake of not following them. Don't rely on google maps if getting there late at night 🙂 A private taxi to the closest stop would have been nicer in hindsight – we took one back to the airport for an early flight at £140 for 4 of us – loved it!

  • Bernardino from United States – 9 October 2024 (9/10)

We liked that the property offered 3 bedrooms so each of us slept comfortably well. It is located near a boat stop (San Samuele) so you didn’t have to travel far lugging your suitcases. Everything we wanted to visit was walkable from the apartment.

  • Lisa from Austria – 1 October 2024 (8/10)

Very spacious, nice bathrooms and towels

What could be improved: It seems that many mosquitoes have been killed on the walls, clearly visible.

  • Paul from Australia – 21 September 2024 (8/10)

Great location. Overall well laid out, very clean, functional. I would think for Venice it was a good place.

What could be improved: External building door did not lock. It was reported. Not enough towels for 5 people staying 4 nights. At least one bedroom should have two single beds rather than double beds would be more practical with friends or older children.

  • Mihaela from Romania – 5 August 2024 (9/10)

The location is great, right in the historical city center. The furniture is of good quality.

What could be improved: I would update the sofa in the living room with one that is not made of leather. Quite uncomfortable especially during hot days.

  • Davit from Armenia – 20 July 2024 (9/10)

It is a wonderful apartment, very clean and conveniently located. It is only 2 minutes from San Samuel bus stop, there is a supermarket 8 minutes away. It is only a 10-minute walk from the city center. The apartment is spacious and comfortable, and Mr. Sandy, who welcomed us, is a very willing person. I will definitely stay in that house again.
