Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Hotel Campiello almost by accident during my last trip to Venice – I was wandering off the beaten path after getting off the vaporetto at San Zaccaria, and there it was, tucked into this quiet little square called Campiello del Vin in the Castello district. It’s not one of those flashy spots right on the Grand Canal, but honestly, that’s part of its charm. The building itself feels like it’s been there forever, with these weathered stone walls and wooden shutters that creak a bit when the wind picks up from the lagoon – you can smell that faint, briny tang in the air, mixed with whatever’s baking from the nearby panificio on Calle del Dose. Check-in was a breeze; the front desk guy – Marco, I think his name was – chatted with me about the best time to hit the Rialto market (early morning, before the crowds swarm in), and he even pointed out a shortcut to avoid the tourist throngs heading to St. Mark’s. My room was on the second floor – no elevator, mind you, so pack light if stairs aren’t your thing – but it overlooked the campiello, and at night, it was dead quiet except for the occasional church bell from San Giorgio dei Greci echoing through the alleys.
What really sets this place apart, though, is how it feels like a genuine slice of Venetian life, not some sanitized hotel chain. The rooms are cozy – well, compact, I mean, like most spots in this city where space is at a premium – with these old-fashioned tiled floors that are cool underfoot after a day of pounding the pavements. Breakfast is simple but solid: fresh cornetti, strong espresso, and those little jars of apricot jam that taste homemade, served in a sunny courtyard where you can hear locals gossiping in dialect over their morning coffee. It’s just a five-minute stroll to the Arsenale, which is great if you’re into that naval history vibe or want to catch the Biennale when it’s on (pro tip: go in September for fewer lines, but avoid peak summer when the humidity turns everything into a steam bath). Oh, and parking? Forget it – this is Venice, so you’re arriving by boat or foot anyway, but the hotel’s super close to the water bus stops, which saved me a ton of hassle with luggage. One minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, but hey, who comes to Venice to stare at screens?
All in all, if you’re after a no-frills stay that puts you right in the heart of the real Castello – away from the San Marco madness but close enough to dip in for gelato at that hidden spot on Fondamenta dei Vetrai – Hotel Campiello is a solid pick. It’s got that 8.3 rating for a reason; nothing extravagant for a 3-star, but the value’s there, especially off-season when rates drop and the place feels even more like your own little hideaway. I’d go back in a heartbeat – just to sit on that campiello bench at dusk, watching the shadows lengthen and feeling like I’ve got Venice all to myself.

Delicious breakfast, location
What could be improved: Superior room was quite small. The reception is shared with another hotel, so most of the time there was not anybody to ask questions or help.Uroš from Slovenia – 11 November 2024 (9/10)
An exceptional and rich breakfast, with an added bonus of real espresso coffee.

Unfortunately did not have the opportunity to stay long enough to enjoy all the amenities. We arrived after midnight and were greeted by the staff and lead to our room which was around the corner from the hotel. As we had requested a second bed, they had it pulled out and made nicely as were exhausted. The bathroom was huge and had so many wonderful amenities. We slept late so missed breakfast so cannot comment but it was available.

Reception and cleaning staff polite and friendly; we just used the hotel for somewhere convenient to sleep. Bed was lovely and comfortable and the bathroom was spotless… just what we needed…
What could be improved: Biscuit, milk in the room…Janet from United States – 20 September 2024 (8/10)
Location was great : close to the Canal Grande and San Marco, but still in a quiet neighborhood. The room was clean, comfortable and attractive.
What could be improved: The shower door needed adjusting, the bidet was wobbly and leaked around the bottom.Jennifer from Canada – 17 September 2024 (9/10)
I loved the location of this hotel. It was in a very convenient place for getting around the city. The staff were extremely helpful and went above and beyond helping us with water taxis etc.
What could be improved: The hotel room and bathroom were very small. I would have liked a restaurant or bar attached to the property. There wasn’t anywhere to sit in the evenings with a drink.
