La Bonbonnier Overview
First Impressions
Walking through the narrow streets of Castello to find La Bonbonnier, you’ll notice how the tourist crowds thin out as you get deeper into this authentic Venetian neighborhood. The three-star hotel sits tucked away on a quiet fondamenta, and honestly, that’s part of its charm — you’re staying where locals actually live and work, not in the circus around San Marco. The building itself has that weathered Venetian elegance you see throughout the city, with those classic shuttered windows that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about Castello — it’s got this perfect balance of being central but not overwhelming. You’re actually in Venice’s top-rated area (couples especially seem to get this, rating the location 9.2), and I can see why. The Arsenale is just a short walk away, which means you can explore Venice’s maritime history without fighting through crowds. Plus, you know what’s great? You can walk to San Marco in about 15 minutes, but when you want to escape the madness, you retreat back to these peaceful canals where the only sounds are water lapping against stone and the occasional gondolier calling out to friends.
The Experience
La Bonbonnier delivers that authentic Venetian stay without the premium price tag of the five-star palazzos along the Grand Canal. The rooms have character — I mean, you’re in a centuries-old building, so expect some quirks like slightly uneven floors and windows that open onto narrow canals or quiet courtyards. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay work, and they’ll give you those insider tips about which bacaro serves the best cicchetti or how to avoid the tourist traps. It’s the kind of place where you feel like a temporary resident rather than just another visitor passing through.
Getting Around
The vaporetto stops are close enough that you won’t be dragging luggage for ages, but far enough that you’re not dealing with constant water bus crowds outside your window. What’s really nice is how walkable everything becomes from here — the Biennale gardens, the naval museum, even that gorgeous walk along the waterfront toward San Giorgio Maggiore. You’ll find yourself taking different routes each day, discovering those hidden squares and bridge crossings that make Venice feel like a living maze rather than just a museum.
Why Guests Love It
People keep coming back to this spot because it strikes that sweet spot between accessibility and authenticity. You’re not paying San Marco prices, but you’re also not stuck way out in Mestre taking trains into the city. The 9.2 location rating isn’t just numbers — it reflects how this area lets you experience Venice like someone who actually lives here, with neighborhood bakeries, local wine bars, and morning markets that haven’t been completely overtaken by souvenir stands. It’s Venice without the performance, if that makes sense.

Reviews of La Bonbonnier

I really enjoyed my stay at Le Bonbonnier and I would definitely stay there again when I’m back in Venice. The place is very cute and comfy, the host is always available and responsive to any questions – before or after my arrival. It was easy to access the apartment even as I arrived late at night. The location is great as the area is super calm, but not too far from the main attractions. Super clean, meets all expectations really.

A fantastic place to stay in Venice. It's in a quiet residential area, close to the vaporetto or a nice stroll to the central areas if one would like to walk. Very clean and comfortable.

Absolutely everything, a beautiful spacious apartment. This was so comfortable and close to the vaperetto station. We attended the Biennale and it was so close. This was one of our highlight stays. Everything we needed was in the apartment. We would highly recommend this place. 10 out of 10
What could be improved: Nothing, everything was lovelyLyske from Netherlands – 8 May 2024 (8/10)
Location next to the Biennale was great. Castello is a nice quiet neighborhood with still some nice restaurants and you can walk to downtown Venice.
What could be improved: The matrass covers kept popping of. And for the money I would have liked that the taking out of the trash and dishes would have been included.Tracey from Australia – 24 October 2023 (9/10)
Great little place. We enjoyed our stay very much. Nice quiet neighbourhood and close to restaurants, waterbus stop and supermarket.

The location was excellent. Shirt walk to water bus. Garabaldi Via had lots of restaurants and supermarket close by.
Area was very quiet and away from the hustle and bustle.Franziska from Germany – 12 June 2022 (9/10)
La Bonbonnier is a beautiful, cozy apartment in a great neighborhood.
The accommodation was equipped with everything needed, we didn't miss anything at all.
Communication was quick and uncomplicated at all times, and the hosts also provided helpful tips on how to get there and back with the water buses.
What could be improved: Nothing!
