Hotel Description
I remember the first time I stepped into La Cortevecchia Venice – it was one of those drizzly afternoons in early spring, when the canals smell faintly of salt and old stone, and the crowds around Piazza San Marco haven’t quite exploded yet. I’d just hopped off the vaporetto at San Marco Vallaresso, dodging a few pigeons and weaving through the narrow calles – you know, the kind that twist like a labyrinth and make you question your map app every five steps. The hotel’s tucked away at 3830 Sestiere di San Marco, right in the heart of it all, but honestly, it feels like a hidden gem. No big flashy sign; just this unassuming entrance off a quiet courtyard – corte, they call it here – that opens up into a space that’s all exposed brick and climbing ivy. I mean, it’s an old palazzo, probably from the 1700s or something, with that worn elegance Venice does so well. Check-in was a breeze; the staff – mostly locals who chat in that melodic Venetian dialect – handed over my key with a smile and a tip about avoiding the tourist traps on nearby Calle Larga XXII Marzo for dinner. Oh, and fair warning: no elevators in these historic spots, so if you’re hauling heavy bags, pack light or ask for help – they were super accommodating with mine.
What really won me over, though, was how it balances that classic Venetian vibe without feeling stuffy. My room overlooked the courtyard – well, sort of a peek through wrought-iron balconies – and it had these heavy velvet curtains that blocked out the early morning light from the lagoon. The bed was comfy, with crisp linens that smelled faintly of lavender (a nice touch after a day of traipsing around), but yeah, rooms are compact, like most places in San Marco; don’t expect sprawling suites unless you’re splurging. Breakfast is served in this cozy ground-floor room with beamed ceilings – think fresh cornetti, cappuccinos strong enough to wake the dead, and maybe some prosciutto if you’re feeling indulgent. I loved wandering out early to grab a spot before the day-trippers flood in from the mainland. It’s steps from Teatro La Fenice, actually – I caught an opera there one night and strolled back in under 10 minutes, no hassle. Noise-wise, it’s surprisingly peaceful for being so central; you might hear distant church bells from San Moisè or the occasional gondola serenade echoing off the walls, but nothing that kept me up. During high season, like July, the alleys get packed, so timing your visit for shoulder months makes all the difference – fewer elbows in your ribs while sipping spritz at a nearby bacaro.
Look, if you’re dreaming of Venice without the overwhelming hustle, La Cortevecchia is where it’s at. It’s got that 4-star polish with a 9.3 rating that feels earned, not hyped – authentic charm, helpful folks, and a spot that lets you dip into the action (Rialto Bridge is a quick 15-minute walk) then retreat to your own little oasis. I’ve stayed in fancier joints, but this one sticks with me; it’s the kind of place where you linger over coffee, watching the light play on the water-stained walls, and think, yeah, this is why we come here. Just remember to wear comfy shoes – those cobblestones are no joke.

the location is amazing! everything is just in 10 minutes walk. the atmosphere of the building and the apartment is also great – all the time you feel that you are in Venice. the host is very responsive. Basic things like cleanliness, equipment, etc are also on the good level.
What could be improved: the only one thing to mention – water pressure is not great.Fazzari from Australia – 20 November 2024 (10/10)
Host met us at an agreed location.
What could be improved: She was friendly & warm.Glenis from New Zealand – 22 September 2024 (8/10)
The apartment was very nicely presented, modern , location very good close to restaurants & shopping.
What could be improved: The 4 flights of stairs were difficult with suitcases.Lars from Germany – 8 September 2024 (9/10)
The appartment is very stylish and location is great in the heart of Venice. Supermarket nearby and Marks square in easy walking distance. Yes, there are stairs but was no issue at all for us. Paolo, the owner, was very helpful to resolve some minor problems. Very fast reaction and quick resolution e.g. a small leakage in the sink was fixed within a day.
What could be improved: AC in the bedroms is very noisy, better have some earplugs for the night.Franky from Hong Kong – 31 July 2024 (10/10)
The location is excellent. San Marco is within walking distance. So many restaurants around. Christine is taking good care of us.

Fantastic location. Very Venetian entry hall. Clean and spacious apartment. Lovely host who looked after us throughout our stay.
What could be improved: Beds a little firm for my taste but that is very subjective.Leanne from Australia – 25 May 2024 (10/10)
Lovely little unit. Host was lovely and very obliging. Plenty of restaurants in close proximity. We knew there would be lots of stairs so We left our large bags in storage at the train station and only took small bags with enough for 2 days – that was a blessing
What could be improved: There was a banging noice from somewhere downstairs that we heard every 15 seconds during the night, very annoying. The pillows were a little hard and flat. After walking around Venice all day you have to tackle 4 flights of stairs when you get home.Davalos from United States – 1 October 2023 (10/10)
Location and staff.communication was excellent.
