Leoncini with a wonderful canal view Overview
First Impressions
Walking down the narrow Calle dello Spezier in Castello, you might almost miss Leoncini with a wonderful canal view — until you step inside and realize why this three-star gem has earned such stellar reviews. The entrance feels intimate rather than grand, which honestly works perfectly in Venice where authenticity trumps flashiness every time. What immediately strikes you is how the staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay memorable, not just checking boxes on some corporate hospitality list.
That Canal View Everyone Talks About
The canal view isn’t just marketing speak here — it’s actually the real deal. From certain rooms, you can watch gondoliers navigate the waterway while you’re still in your pajamas, and there’s something magical about hearing the gentle lapping of water instead of traffic noise. I mean, this is why you come to Venice, right? The view changes throughout the day too, from morning mist rising off the water to the golden hour reflections that make you understand why painters have been obsessed with this city for centuries.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s what the guidebooks don’t tell you — Castello is where Venetians actually live and work, so staying at Leoncini puts you in the real Venice, not just the tourist version. You’re close enough to San Marco that you can easily walk there (maybe 10 minutes through some gorgeous back streets), but far enough away that you escape the crowds when you want to. The neighborhood has authentic bacari where locals grab their evening spritz, and honestly, that’s worth more than being right next to the Rialto Bridge where you can’t move for tour groups.
The Rooms and Comfort Factor
The accommodations strike that sweet spot between Venetian character and modern comfort — you know, old wooden beams and period details, but also reliable wifi and a bathroom that actually works properly. Venice can be tricky with older buildings, but Leoncini seems to have figured out how to preserve the charm while making sure everything functions as it should. The beds are comfortable enough that you’ll actually get good sleep (not always a given in historic properties), and the rooms feel cozy rather than cramped, which is an art form in a city where space is at such a premium.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
That 9.5 rating isn’t an accident — it comes from those little touches that show someone’s paying attention. Maybe it’s the local recommendations that actually pan out, or the way they handle the inevitable Venice logistics (like water taxi coordination) without making you feel like you’re bothering them. Couples especially seem to love this place, probably because it feels romantic without being overly precious about it. You get the Venice experience you came for, but with a level of service and comfort that makes you want to extend your stay rather than counting down the days until you can sleep in a normal-sized bed again.

The apartment is very authentic, neat and has a unique atmosphere. Loved the location, the view is magnificent! The master is also very pleasant, met us at a boat station and helped with the luggage! Very nice and polite, puts his soul to the business. Would recommend, 100/10!

Location as awesome! Huge space and Nikos is so communicative and so helpful that it made our journey to the apartment so easy, with no worries at all. There are bars and restaurants all round , but it’s lovely and peaceful in the apartment. The view down onto the canal is amazing and we loved sitting and watching the world go by. One of the nicest touches was a bottle of wine or Prosecco you can purchase on arrival. After a long journey and arriving into the evening when everything was closing, it was lovely to open the apartment door, put bags down, feet up and have a glass of wine.
The apartment is spacious, spotless and well equipped. We loved the little tea selection and coffee made available. Bed was super comfy and huge.
Would defo stay again. The only thing I would add, is it would be helpful to have a small table in between the chairs in the sitting room area so you don’t have to put your cup or glass on the floor if sat watching tv. But all in all.. perfecto!
What could be improved: Its was a LOVELY apartment!!Ian from Australia – 9 October 2023 (10/10)
Nikos was an excellent communicator and replied promptly to all of our questions. He gave us great suggestions of what was available in the area. The apartnent was very clean and comfortable.
We really enjoyed our stay, and should we be back in Venice, we would certainly be looking at staying here again.
What could be improved: As we are getting older, the stairs up to the apartment were sometimes a challenge, especially with luggage. I would suggest those with mobility issues would be better in a ground floor apartment in Venice unless an elevator is available.
No iron or ironing board.Monika from United Kingdom – 8 July 2023 (10/10)
Amazing flat in a great location! Really specious with everything you need. Nice balcony with a lovely view of the canal. Hosts were extremely helpful, always responded quickly to every query. Even when I just asked about some restaurant, attractions etc. recommendations. Went above and beyond to make our stay as easy and enjoyable as possible. Would definitely stay there again😊
What could be improved: I liked everything.Santiago from Sweden – 13 May 2023 (10/10)
The apartment is clean and well equipped. It has everything you need for a short vacation. Wi-Fi that works well. From the balcony you can see a beautiful canal where many gondolas pass. The host is great, all ways available and helpful. The location is great, central and close to the most important places. Lots of restaurants and cafes nearby. we strongly recommend this property.
What could be improved: Nothing: everything was perfect
