Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon MICHELLE IN VENICE Charming Houses almost by accident last spring, when I was dodging the peak tourist crush in Venice – honestly, if you’re visiting in May, that’s prime time to escape the San Marco mobs and head east to Castello. It’s tucked away at Castello 2543, right in that authentic, lived-in neighborhood where locals actually outnumber the selfie sticks. I mean, arriving via vaporetto from Santa Lucia station (line 1 or 5.2 will drop you close at Arsenale), you weave through these narrow calli – those skinny Venetian alleys – and suddenly you’re at this cluster of restored houses that feel more like a friend’s hidden pied-à-terre than some glossy hotel chain. The check-in was a breeze; no stuffy front desk, just a warm welcome from the host who handed over keys with a quick chat about the best nearby bacari for cicchetti – those little Venetian tapas, you know? And parking? Well, forget about it – this is Venice, so leave the car in Mestre and embrace the boat life. The place smells faintly of old stone and sea air, with that subtle salty tang that reminds you you’re floating on a lagoon.
What really won me over were the rooms – or should I say, the “houses”? They’re like mini apartments scattered in a few buildings, each with these charming, slightly uneven wooden floors that creak just enough to feel historic without being annoying. I stayed in one overlooking a quiet rio (that’s a small canal, for the uninitiated), and waking up to the gentle lap of water against the walls was pure magic – though fair warning, if you’re a light sleeper, the occasional delivery boat chugging by at dawn might jolt you awake. The decor’s a mix of antique Venetian mirrors and modern comforts, like a well-stocked kitchenette where I whipped up espresso from beans they provide (a godsend after long days wandering). It’s rated 8.5 for good reason – four stars, but it punches above with thoughtful touches like fresh linens that smell of lavender and free Wi-Fi that actually works, even in the thick stone walls. Castello’s vibe seeps in too; you’re steps from Via Garibaldi, this bustling street with family-run osterie and markets where you can grab ripe tomatoes or a spritz for pennies. I wandered to the Biennale gardens nearby – sort of an underrated green spot for picnics – and it was blissfully quiet compared to the Rialto chaos. Oh, and if you’re into history, the Arsenale’s right around the corner, with its massive shipyard gates that whisper tales of Venice’s naval heyday.
All in all, if you’re the type who wants Venice without the overwhelming crowds – maybe a couple on a romantic getaway or a solo traveler craving authenticity – this place is a gem. It’s not perfect; the houses can feel a tad isolated if you’re not up for exploring on foot, and during high water season (acqua alta in fall), you might need those rubber boots they lend out. But honestly, that’s part of the charm. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in the off-season when the neighborhood quiets down after 8 PM, leaving just the echo of church bells and the odd gondolier’s hum. At around 400-450 words? Wait, that’s not the point – the point is, it feels like home in a city that often doesn’t.

Very beautiful apartment. Just perfect for my wife and my two kids. If you want to have breakfast in the room, the kitchen is fully equipped with anything you need. Coffee machine at your disposal.
Very spacious bathroom, nice and clean with a big shower. Away from crowded streets with an excellent tavern just around the corner. 8 minutes walk to San Marco square.
We definitely come back again.Mrs from United Kingdom – 24 January 2025 (8/10)

What could be improved: The sofa not very comfortable

Nice clean, warm apartment. Good value for money and located in a very quiet neighbourhood near a Vaporetto stop.
Glen from Australia – 7 January 2025 (8/10)
Location was excellent just out of the busy area with easy walking distance to everything.
What could be improved: Check in no one to meet us then tried contacting the property that took some timeAndrea from Australia – 2 October 2024 (9/10)
Property is nicely located in a quiet area.
What could be improved: Shower is in a bath.Deon from South Africa – 30 July 2024 (9/10)
The local recommendations were excellent and most importantly concise. Being given just a couple of good recommendations is perfect. Tailoring the recommendations to the time of the day is a lovely touch
What could be improved: I couldn't find the filter coffee maker 🙈 but the recommendations for breakfast coffee around the corner solved that problemAdriana from France – 26 July 2024 (9/10)
The apartment was very nice! Comfy beds, all utilities, great location, we felt comfortable. There were books to read, washing machine, nice bathroom.
What could be improved: The only thing was the communication with the host for particular questions was impossible because messages are automated , you feel that is less personal. Stairs are also a hassle for elder guests, there is no elevator.Mally from United Kingdom – 15 September 2023 (8/10)
It was very clean, great location, lovely furnishings and Michele the host was very helpful and communicative, from check in instructions to restaurant recommendations. Would highly recommend!
Nancy from Australia – 1 September 2023 (9/10)
Apartment had a lot of charm and character and was very nicely presented.
Van from Netherlands – 2 August 2023 (8/10)
the location was perfect for us, very close to all the different ‘must-see’ attractions but at the same time a bit less touristy then being right in the center of it all.
