Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Red House ai Mori during one of those misty Venetian mornings last fall – you know, when the fog rolls off the lagoon and makes everything feel like a dream sequence from an old movie. I’d hopped off the vaporetto at Ca’ d’Oro, dodging the usual throng of day-trippers on Strada Nova, and wandered down Calle Brazzo, this narrow little alley in Cannaregio that’s mercifully off the beaten path. Honestly, it’s a relief after the chaos of San Marco; Cannaregio has that lived-in vibe, with locals grabbing espresso at corner bars and kids playing soccer against ancient walls. The hotel itself is this charming red-painted building – hence the name, I suppose – tucked right by a quiet canal, and walking up to it, you can smell that faint, briny tang of the water mixed with fresh bread from a nearby bakery. Check-in was a breeze; the staff – a mix of friendly Venetians who actually live in the neighborhood – handed over the keys with a quick chat about the best time to visit the nearby Jewish Ghetto (go early to avoid the crowds, they said). No fancy lobby here, just a cozy entrance with worn marble floors that echo your footsteps, and yeah, there’s no elevator, so pack light if you’re on an upper floor – stairs are steep, but that’s Venice for you.

What really won me over, though, was how the place feels like a hidden gem without trying too hard. My room overlooked the canal – well, sort of a side view, but close enough to hear the gentle lap of water against the stones at night, which is oddly soothing after a day of pounding pavements. The decor’s this mix of modern minimalism and old-world touches: think exposed brick walls (cool to the touch, like they’ve absorbed centuries of stories), comfy beds with crisp linens, and a bathroom that, honestly, was spotless but on the compact side – fine for a quick shower, but don’t expect a spa tub. Breakfast is served in a sunny courtyard – oh man, the cornetti were flaky and fresh, paired with strong coffee that hits just right – and it’s included, which is a lifesaver in pricey Venice. I mean, you’re steps from spots like the Madonna dell’Orto church, where Tintoretto’s buried, or that little osteria on Fondamenta della Sensa for cicchetti and spritz at sunset. Noise-wise, it’s pretty quiet, especially off-season; summer might bring more boat traffic, but nothing like the Rialto buzz. One minor gripe: Wi-Fi can be spotty in the thicker-walled rooms, but hey, who comes to Venice to scroll Instagram all day?

All in all, if you’re after a 4-star spot that feels authentic rather than tourist-trappy, Red House ai Mori is a solid pick – rated 8.7 for good reason, I’d say. It’s perfect for couples or solo travelers who want to immerse in the real Cannaregio rhythm, maybe wander to the Ghetto for some history or hop a boat to Murano. Just remember, Venice floods occasionally (aqua alta in winter), so check the forecasts and pack those rubber boots. I left feeling like I’d uncovered a little secret – you know what, book it before everyone else does.

This is a little 2-storey house in Cannaregio, about a 15-minute walk from Santa Lucia train station. There are 4 or 5 small bridges to go over to get there, depending on the route you take. We picked the keys up from a hotel nearby. The house is well-designed and quiet. You must be in decent shape to go up and down the stairs to the bedrooms on the second floor. There is no outdoor space but the windows face a courtyard/greenspace. The water pressure and temperature in the bath/shower were great and the air conditioners were functional – it was unseasonably hot and humid during our visit.

What could be improved: We were the first guests "post-Covid" – the house had been rented out for a longer term before us. We assumed that the deficiencies we noticed were due to this fact – few hangers, a lack of garbage bins (only the kitchen had bins), no instructions for anything. Our main issue was mosquitoes – there were no screens on the windows and we found the plug-in mosquito repellent in a cupboard on the last day. We learned to leave the windows closed most of the time. Outside of mosquito "season", staying here would be really pleasant, but not for anybody with issues going up and down stairs repeatedly!

  • Jackso from Ireland – 8 February 2023 (7/10)

Perfect place for 3 .Well equipped .clean. .a few resturants close by .

What could be improved: Steep stairs . Only bathroom down stairs if needed during night. Slightly of the main area .but once you get ur bearings its fine .

  • Alan from United Kingdom – 22 September 2024 (7/10)

    Location

What could be improved: Only 1 mirror which was in the bathroom, 2nd bedroom not big enough for 2 adults.

  • Robert from Romania – 22 September 2023 (7/10)

Location was good, on the istoric island. The host was very kind and helped us with all the information needed.

What could be improved: The apartment wasn't very clean, my bedsheet was stained. The shower was old and the water didn't kept the chosen temperature, you had to adjust it several times during a bath, which was annoying.

  • Marcin from Poland – 30 January 2025 (9/10)

  • Dariya from Brazil – 20 December 2024 (9/10)

Superou minhas expectativas, o AP é relativamente grande, tem dois quartos (não tinha entendido isso pelas fotos), cozinha e banheiro completos, localização boa. Do lado tem vários barzinhos não muito turísticos e um supermercado escondido numa ruela.
