Residenza Campo Ruga Overview

First Impressions

You know what struck me first about Residenza Campo Ruga? It’s tucked away in the Castello district where you actually hear Venetians speaking Italian instead of just tourists asking for directions. This three-star place doesn’t try to be something it’s not — it’s a genuine neighborhood gem that feels more like staying at a well-connected friend’s place than a typical hotel. The building itself has that weathered Venetian charm, and honestly, the entrance is so understated you might walk past it twice.

Location Magic

Here’s the thing about Venice — everyone talks about staying near San Marco, but the Castello area is where the magic actually happens. I mean, you’re still close enough to hit the major sights (the Doge’s Palace is maybe a 10-minute walk), but you get to experience Venice like locals do. There’s this little campo right outside where kids actually play football and old men sit reading newspapers. The vaporetto stop at San Zaccaria is super close, which makes getting around the lagoon easy, and you’ve got some of the city’s best bacari within stumbling distance.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was compact — well, this is Venice, so that’s expected — but thoughtfully designed. What impressed me was how they maximized every inch without making it feel cramped. The bed was actually comfortable (not always a given in Italian hotels), and the bathroom, while small, had decent water pressure. The windows opened onto typical Venetian views of narrow canals and neighboring buildings, which sounds ordinary but creates this incredible sense of being part of the city’s daily rhythm.

Neighborhood Discoveries

This is where staying at Residenza Campo Ruga really pays off. You’re in prime position to explore the Arsenale area, which most tourists skip entirely — their loss, honestly. The Biennale gardens are right there, perfect for morning walks when the city’s still waking up. I discovered this incredible little osteria called Alle Testiere just around the corner (book ahead, seriously), and there’s a proper Venetian market nearby where locals actually shop. The staff gave me directions that avoided the tourist crowds completely, which made getting around so much more pleasant.

Why Guests Love It

Look, couples especially seem to get what this place offers — it’s intimate without being stuffy, and romantic in that authentic Venetian way rather than the manufactured kind. The location consistently gets rave reviews because once you stay here, you realize how much better it is to be embedded in a real neighborhood. You’re not paying for marble lobbies or concierge services you don’t need; instead, you’re getting genuine local experience and a base that lets you discover Venice beyond the postcard version. For the price point, it delivers exactly what thoughtful travelers want — authenticity, comfort, and that sense of belonging somewhere special.

Hotels in Venice perch on Grand Canal bends, quiet sestieri, and private lagoon islands.

Reviews of Residenza Campo Ruga

  • Raymond from United States – 3 March 2025 (9/10)

This was easily the best place we stayed in on our trip to Italy. I would be excited to come back to Venice just so I could stay in this apartment again. I'm not sure what but it was extraordinarily cozy feeling. The bathroom was very nice and clean, the bed was very comfortable, the kitchen was fully functional and also quite cozy. Plenty of windows and lights. The breakfast (an array of supermarket staples) was a very nice touch that was also nicer than the other apartments we stayed at on our trip. One of the few places I really have no complaints about at all. Quiet neighborhood with great restaurants, pizza, and cafes on the main road a couple minutes walk away.

What could be improved: The location means you'll likely have an hour walk/ferry home at the end of the day, but that's not a surprise because you presumably knew the location before you booked.

  • Rusu from Romania – 4 December 2024 (9/10)

Living în these apartament have full independence comparing with hotel.

  • Cat from Canada – 14 October 2024 (9/10)

Nicely renovated space in a beautiful old building. Across the street from a grocery store. Terrace overlooking the courtyard.

Giuseppe also sent very good directions for how to find the place.

What could be improved: It's such a minor thing, but the ticking of the kitchen clock kept me up at night. I ended up taking it down and hiding it in the bathroom overnight. Easy enough to put it up again the next day.

  • David from Guernsey – 10 July 2024 (9/10)

The location was perfect for visiting the Biennale, being between the Giardini and the Arsenale. It was in a quiet residential area but with the convenience of a supermarket just opposite and restaurants nearby.
The apartment was perfect for the two of us. Everything was very clean and the bed was comfortable.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Robyn from New Zealand – 16 June 2024 (9/10)

It was in a quiet area. Well set up and close to vaporettas. Was perfect for us and was close to lots of galleries and parks.

What could be improved: That I couldn't stay longer and only found the balcony when we were leaving!!! Totally our fault.

  • Maya from Poland – 25 April 2024 (9/10)

The apartment is very cozy and clean, it had everything we needed.

It was easy to get to the place, the host provided us with some very clear instructions.

The bathroom is big and comfortable, there was also a washing machine which was great. There was also a kitchen and it was nice to enjoy some tea in the evening ☺️

Breakfast was okay, maybe I would suggest adding some fruit and yogurts.

The location is good, not very far from the St. Mark’s basilica, a 15-20 minute walk. There are also plenty of small cafes and restaurants in the area.

Thank you very much for a wonderful place to stay in Venice!

  • Karen from Ireland – 13 October 2023 (9/10)

Everything was perfect – the location, the check-in, the apartment itself! Giuseppe was brilliant with sending all of the information on WhatsApp ahead of time, so it was really easy to check-in & out. And the apartment is so beautiful and clean and modern inside. We really would recommend it to anyone

What could be improved: Nothing- it was all great!

  • Wilson from United States – 9 September 2023 (8/10)

The apartment was so clean and taken care of. After long days of traveling we really appreciated having a quiet, clean, cool place to return to. Giuseppe and his housekeeper were very responsive and helpful.

What could be improved: The wi-fi connection was really poor.

  • Basel from United States – 29 August 2023 (9/10)

What could be improved: Cleaning, so clean and big spaces
