Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Residenza Leon D’oro kind of by accident last spring when I was dodging the peak tourist crush in Venice – honestly, if you’re smart, avoid July and August unless you love sweating through crowds on the Rialto. It’s tucked away in Cannaregio, right off that bustling stretch near Fondamenta della Misericordia, where locals actually live and grab their morning espresso without a million selfie sticks in the way. I mean, the address is Cannaregio 440/a, but what that really means is you’re a quick 10-minute walk from Santa Lucia station – no lugging suitcases over a dozen bridges like you’d have to for something in San Marco. I remember arriving by vaporetto from the airport, hopping off at Guglie, and weaving through those narrow calli with the faint salty tang of the canal in the air, mixed with whatever the neighborhood bakeries were firing up. The building itself has that classic Venetian vibe – faded ochre walls, wrought-iron balconies that look like they’ve seen centuries of gossip – and stepping inside felt like entering a well-kept secret, you know? The lobby’s small but cozy, with these old wooden beams overhead and a front desk guy who chatted me up about the best cicchetti spots nearby, like that hole-in-the-wall place on Rio Terà San Leonardo where they do killer baccalà mantecato.
What really won me over, though, was how the place balances that old-world charm with stuff that actually makes your stay comfortable – none of that stuffy, over-the-top luxury, but thoughtful touches like fresh linens that smell faintly of lavender (or maybe it was just the humidity playing tricks). My room was on the second floor – fair warning, there’s no elevator, so if you’ve got heavy bags or bad knees, pack light or ask for ground level; I sort of regretted my overpacking after those steep stairs. But once up there, it opened onto a little terrace overlooking the courtyard, quiet enough that the only sounds were distant church bells from Madonna dell’Orto and the occasional splash from a passing gondola. Breakfast was a highlight – served in this sunlit room with views of the canal, nothing fancy, just strong coffee, flaky cornetti, and those prosciutto sandwiches that hit the spot before a day of wandering. And get this, it’s super close to the Jewish Ghetto – I spent an afternoon there, popping into the synagogues and grabbing falafel at Gam Gam, which felt like a real slice of Venice’s layered history, away from the St. Mark’s frenzy. Oh, and noise-wise, Cannaregio gets lively in the evenings with aperitivo crowds along the fondamenta, but the hotel’s set back enough that it quiets down by 10 pm; I slept like a baby, even with the spring humidity making everything a tad sticky.
All in all, if you’re after a spot that feels authentically Venetian without the San Polo price tag or the constant buzz – well, this is it. Residenza Leon D’oro isn’t perfect; the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the back rooms, and rooms are on the snug side like most places here, but that’s Venice for you. I’d go back in a heartbeat for that mix of peace and proximity – you’re steps from vaporetto lines that zip you to the islands or the Arsenale, yet far enough from the day-trippers that you can actually hear yourself think. Honestly, for a 4-star with an 8.5 rating, it punches above its weight, especially if you’re the type who wants to linger over a spritz at a local bacaro rather than queue for the Doge’s Palace. Book it for shoulder season, pack comfy shoes, and you’ll thank me later.

Elevator for luggage was a pleasant surprise. The apartment was lovely!
What could be improved: No shampoo.Stephen from United Kingdom – 9 July 2024 (9/10)
Location was great. Easily walkable from the bus/train station
What could be improved: Would have been better if we had the exact street name and house number.
It is slightly different to your advertised location. We had to send your man a photo of where we were so he could meet us.
If you copy and paste your advertised location in google maps it takes you somewhere else.
This was not a huge problem and would not deter me from recommending it to anyone.Pranab from Australia – 27 April 2022 (7/10)
The location was great, the apartment was spacious.
What could be improved: After paying so much money for the stay we were told to do the rubbish ourselves, if not then we would be charged €50 additional for it. Something very strange which made a little uncomfortable.Yinghe from China – 23 July 2024 (7/10)
The apartment was spacious and well-equipped. The check-in process was very smooth and the staff was very friendly. The location was perfect and close to the railway station.
What could be improved: The electricity fell off from time to time, once the two air-conditioners were on, it was impossible to use the electric kettle or microwave. One of the air-conditioners wasn't working properly.Sheryl from Canada – 5 December 2023 (7/10)
No included breakfast- as expected. We like the location, quiet and close proximity to the train and vapperetto.
What could be improved: We were a party of 4 and were only given one key. The heating system gave us a bit of grief – one morning we had no hot water and it was 6 hour before we could get a response from the host – by then we had it functioning.Rossana from Australia – 26 September 2023 (7/10)
We loved the location : it was a big apartment.
What could be improved: The properties entrance seriously smelled. There is a park outside and it smells from dogs . The entrance inside smells too . It could be cleaned better especially as the rubbish is left at the front door.
Other than that it’s a great location and the apartment will s clean and spacious.Cho from Hong Kong – 4 August 2023 (8/10)
Apartment accommodation near the train station, very quiet and lift, the reception staff is a young polite, will explain in detail the apartment needs attention, stay for three nights one of the whole house power outage, call the owner to quickly get the solution.
if the next time to Venetian will choose this apartment accommodation.
What could be improved: The power outage in the apartment was a bit scary.Mihai from Romania – 3 April 2023 (9/10)
Very clean and good location, 10 minutes away from the Venice train station. Also, very spacious apartment (with the kitchen very well equipped). 2 vaporetto station in the proximity.
What could be improved: A bit far from Piazza San Marco. The closest vaporetto station (Ferrovia) was very crowded. The mattress of the double bed ok but not very comfortable.Siew from Singapore – 22 March 2023 (8/10)
The location is just 5 minutes walk to the train station. Though it is located in the back alley but once you walk out, you will reach the busy street with restaurants and supermarket, very convenient. The apartment is of good size with one bathroom room and one toilet so is really a bonus. Kitchen has complete utensils so makes cooking easy. Wifi is good if we did not encounter power trip.
What could be improved: The power trip one time and cause the wifi not working. Communicated with owner but did not able to help. We managed to resolve the problem after an hour.Abhimanyu from India – 11 September 2022 (8/10)
Location of the apartment is right next to the station. Easy access.
Very neat and clean, and spacious apartment. I would give my highest possible recommendation
What could be improved: Since the average temperature is rising, the ACs should be in the bedrooms too (at present they are at alley and living room) or a fan.
