First Impressions

Walking through the narrow streets of Castello to reach San Lorenzo Garden, you’ll notice how the tourist crowds start to thin out — and that’s exactly the point. This three-star hotel sits in what locals consider the most authentic part of Venice, tucked away in a residential neighborhood where you’ll actually hear Italian being spoken on the streets. The entrance is understated in that particularly Venetian way, but step inside and you’re greeted by a surprisingly spacious lobby that feels more like a friend’s elegant home than a typical hotel.

Location & Neighborhood

Honestly, the location here is pretty much perfect if you want to experience Venice like someone who actually lives there. You’re in Castello, which means you can walk to San Marco in about ten minutes, but you’re far enough away that you won’t be fighting through selfie sticks to get to your front door. The nearby Campo Santa Maria Formosa is one of my favorite squares in the city — it’s got a great morning market and a couple of cafes where you can grab an espresso without paying tourist prices. Plus, you’re just a few minutes from the Arsenale, which most visitors skip but is absolutely worth seeing.

The Rooms

The rooms at San Lorenzo Garden are what I’d call thoughtfully designed rather than flashy. You won’t find over-the-top Venetian décor here — instead, there’s a clean, contemporary feel that actually lets you appreciate the original architectural details like the exposed beams and terrazzo floors. The bathrooms are modern and well-equipped, which honestly matters more than you might think when you’re dealing with Venice’s notoriously quirky plumbing. What really impressed me was how quiet everything felt, especially considering you’re still in the heart of the city.

The Garden Experience

Here’s the thing that sets this place apart — the garden. I mean, private outdoor space in Venice is basically like finding a unicorn, and San Lorenzo Garden has managed to create this peaceful courtyard where you can actually sit outside with a glass of wine and decompress from all the sightseeing. It’s not huge, but it’s beautifully maintained and feels like a secret escape from the intensity of the city. In the morning, you can have your coffee out there and plan your day without the usual Venice chaos swirling around you.

What keeps people coming back to San Lorenzo Garden is that perfect balance between being close to everything but not overwhelmed by it all. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood and will point you toward the good bacari (those little wine bars locals frequent) rather than the tourist traps. You’ll save money on meals, get a better feel for real Venetian life, and still be able to hit all the major sights without breaking a sweat. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’ve discovered something special — which, in a city as picked-over as Venice, is saying something.

  l'emplacement dans le quartier de Castelo était top avec un petit supermarché juste derrière. Le logement est au calme et à 10 min à pied de San Marco. Nous avons été accueillis en français par Giulio qui nous a conseillé quelques spot de visite. L'appartement est d'une propreté irréprochable plutôt vaste et la literie est impeccable.

  The flat is wonderfully bright, very clean, spacious and quiet, very well equipped for cooking meals from the nearby Rialto market and the supermarket around the corner. We felt very well looked after and informed by Riccardo, the son of the landlady. Being next to the beautiful, atmospheric piazza and very interesting Ocean Space is an extra treat. We can‘t wait to come back.
