Santa Margherita Guest House Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Santa Margherita Guest House feels like discovering a well-kept secret in the heart of Dorsoduro. This three-star gem sits tucked away on a quiet canal-side street, and honestly, I almost walked past it — the entrance is understated in that perfectly Venetian way. The building itself has that weathered elegance you find all over Venice, with worn stone steps and windows that have been watching gondolas drift by for centuries.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what’s brilliant about staying in Dorsoduro? You’re actually living like a local instead of fighting crowds around San Marco every morning. The guest house is maybe a ten-minute walk to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and you can reach the Accademia Bridge without breaking a sweat. I mean, couples absolutely love this area — there’s something romantic about wandering these quieter campos in the evening when the day-trippers have all headed back to the mainland. The neighborhood has this authentic feel where you’ll find tiny bacari (wine bars) that tourists rarely discover.
The Room
My room was compact but thoughtfully designed — exactly what you’d expect from a renovated Venetian building where space is precious. The bed was surprisingly comfortable, and I appreciated the modern touches like decent Wi-Fi and a proper shower (trust me, this isn’t always a given in Venice’s older accommodations). The windows opened onto a small canal, and while it wasn’t the Grand Canal view you see in movies, watching locals go about their daily routines was somehow more charming. There’s air conditioning too, which you’ll definitely appreciate if you’re visiting during the sweltering summer months.
Daily Life & Practicalities
The staff here actually know the neighborhood — they pointed me toward a fantastic little restaurant around the corner that I never would have found otherwise. Breakfast isn’t elaborate, but it’s fresh and gets you started without the tourist-trap pricing you’ll find near the major sights. One thing to note: there’s no elevator, so if you’re hauling heavy luggage, request a lower floor when booking. The nearest vaporetto stop is Ca’ Rezzonico, which connects you easily to anywhere you want to go in the city.
Why Guests Love It
What sets Santa Margherita Guest House apart is how it balances authenticity with comfort — you’re staying in a real Venetian neighborhood without sacrificing modern conveniences. The recent guests’ high ratings make sense when you experience how peaceful this area becomes after sunset, yet you’re still close enough to walk to all the major attractions. It’s particularly perfect for couples who want to experience Venice’s romantic side without the constant bustle. The value here is solid too — you’re getting genuine Venetian character at a reasonable price point, which honestly isn’t easy to find in this city.
Early hotels booking in Venice secures balcony seats for Vogalonga regattas and torchlit basilica tours.

Clean rooms, responsive host, generous kitchenette available with coffee and food

Great location, clean and charming. We walked all over the city from the property. It had a nice outdoor patio for eating and enjoying, unfortunately, it was rainy and chilly while we were there so we did not have the opportunity to enjoy the pretty space. The lobby was very cute, with some books and Venice guides available. Very nice.
Absolutely the most unique hair dryer I ever saw. You had to tilt the device away from the wall to make it work. But it got the job done!
What could be improved: We had asked for two beds, but the two twin beds were made up together so we had only one bottom sheet, with two duvets. We separated them no problem, but my son’s bed had no bottom sheet. I asked for help with this but got no response.
We had no top sheet, just the duvet, which didn’t seem sanitary to me.
I emailed the manager about that but received no response.
Also, the mattresses were very hard and lumpy. Need updating.
The breakfast was handy and the espresso machine good, but the pastries were individually wrapped – good to grab, but not as good as fresh. We did appreciate the convenience of the breakfast.Cari from United Kingdom – 9 October 2024 (9/10)
The staff were so friendly, went above and beyond to help. Just fifteen minutes from the train station walking wise. Extra little touches with the facilities and very clean. The bed was so comfy, I didn't want to get out of bed.
What could be improved: Nothing I didn't like.Della from United Kingdom – 9 September 2024 (9/10)
Location was perfect, easy walk to academia or San basilo. Restaurants locally. Breakfast items available. Access to a kitchen area if needed. Could leave luggage on day of departure. Fantastic accommodation all round

15 minutes from Piazzale Roma , queit street, nice yard behind windows. . Nice kitchen with all things you need to make coffee or even breakfast. Good price for room. Easy contact with Owner Maria.
Jonathan from United States – 31 July 2024 (9/10)
The room was super comfortable, loaded with everything one could need, and everything was operable and functional. Kitchen was thoughtfully designed with many options and a complete array of utensils, dishes and cookware.
What could be improved: The first day there was one egg, which I cooked, and never replenished. The fruit looked a little spent too. Have a nice to see it freshened up daily, but I was still very happy with the place.Spievak from United States – 29 July 2024 (9/10)
Perfect location and lots of room.

It was a real pleasure to return to the Santa Margherita guest house after ten years! The same wonderful atmosphere and comfort. It's a wonderful place, away from the crowds, and in the heart of the real, non-touristy Venice. It is close to all the sights, vaporetto and well connected to the Marco Polo airport and train station and with wonderful restaurants and shops nearby. Maria is a wonderful host. The guest house does not include breakfast in its official offer, but guests can enjoy a free Italian breakfast that includes croissants, sweets and all kinds of coffee and tea. I wholeheartedly recommend it and can't wait to visit again.

Great location, easy to find, both the room and bathroom were quire large, it was clean and as advertised.
What could be improved: room got rather stuffy/hot at night, ac made pretty loud noise and didn’t seem to put out much cool air so had to open windows (which let in some rather aggressive mosquitoes) to cool off.
