Location & Neighborhood

The Castello district is where you want to be if you’re looking for that sweet spot between authentic Venice and easy access to the main sights. I mean, you’re literally in what’s considered the top-rated area in Venice, but it doesn’t feel overrun with tour groups like San Marco can get. The Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo is just around the corner — locals call it Campo Zanipolo, which is actually where the hotel gets its name. You can walk to St. Mark’s Square in about ten minutes, but you’ll also stumble upon neighborhood bacari (wine bars) and small campos where kids still play football.

The Rooms

Don’t expect huge spaces — this is Venice, after all, where even palazzos work with what they’ve got. The rooms at ZANIPOLO Marco-canal are compact but thoughtfully arranged, and honestly, you’ll probably spend most of your time exploring anyway. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night; the thick walls of these old buildings actually work in your favor. Some rooms have canal views (though not the Grand Canal — let’s be realistic about the price point), and the bathrooms are modern enough without losing the building’s character.

Getting Around

Here’s something that matters more than you might think — the nearest vaporetto stop is Ospedale, which connects you to both the main island routes and the outer islands like Murano and Burano. But actually, I found myself walking most places because the location is just that good. You’re close enough to the Rialto area for great dining, but far enough from the chaos that you can duck back for an afternoon rest without fighting crowds. The staff will give you proper directions too, not just the obvious tourist routes that take twice as long.

Why Couples Love It

There’s definitely something romantic about staying in this part of Venice — maybe it’s the way the morning light hits the canal outside, or how you can wander the quiet streets early in the morning before the day-trippers arrive. The hotel seems to attract couples who want to experience Venice without the circus atmosphere, and I get it. You’re close enough to everything that matters, but you’re also staying somewhere that feels like a little secret. For a three-star place, ZANIPOLO Marco-canal delivers exactly what it promises — a genuine Venetian experience without breaking the bank or sacrificing comfort.

  There was nothing nice about this apartment except that it is in Venice.
  
  What could be improved: The apartment was terrible. We were greeted by a stench – probably from old furniture, carpets and mattresses. The furniture in the apartment is old, but it is not antiques, just old junk. The walls are full of water stains. The door creaks. In the bathroom, the shower cabin leaks and water spills onto the floor, making it very slippery. The tiles in the kitchen are broken. It is very dark inside as the windows are small. The facility's staff was unhelpful and unpleasant. Starting with trivial things – I reported an insufficient amount of toilet paper (there were only 2 rolls for 3 nights for 5 people) and even though toilet paper was on the equipment list, I was told to go to the store to buy it myself. Similarly, with the kettle, which didn't work, the staff suggested that I didn't know how to turn it on. Another problem is the lack of towels for one person. Even though I reported a week before arrival that there would be an extra person and paid extra during check-in, the staff suggested that it was my fault because there were supposed to be fewer people. They brought it on the last day. Similarly with duvets – I asked a week earlier for separate duvets in double beds because we are friends, not couples, this request was not fulfilled, which meant that two people had nothing to sleep under.
  To sum up, I do not recommend staying in this place. Don't be fooled by the photos, they are taken in such a way that everything looks nice and inviting, but in reality it is not.
